I died, but I am going back tonight. I will begin making amazing items from its ore.
Also, my guide spawned in an outpost building, far from where i desire, can I just kill him with a sword or a bucket of lava? He'll respawn in a new place in a bit, right?

Take down the out post building. My guys tend to just move on their own every so often if there's other empty rooms. I've also heard they'll move if there's a room made of better materials.

he will if you deconstruct the outpost and build another house for him

Ah. I made a castle, so he went there when he respawned because it was made of the nicer materials.
Where the hell are spells? All I can do I make great armor and weapons. I didn't know about spells until the other day. Yet to find one.
There aren't any. Some weapons use mana to attack is all.
... smartass. :P
Buh? What'd I do? There aren't any spells, are there?
false, there are 2 spellbooks and 3 magic wands. those cast spells.
Holy crap, are those new? I searched for spells on the wiki when I found out there was mana and didn't manage to find anything. I didn't know what mana was for for the longest time either.
So I wasn't being a smartass I was just being dumb. :^:
There's nothing that casts a spell that isn't something like a weapon, wand. book etc. I guess magic in terraria has to be focused through an object of some kind.

its cool. one of the spell books is new, but the 3 wands were always there.
though water bolt is a good spell to have. it passes through your targets.
Just Minecraft it, so to speak. If you have no experience from that end then cut down some trees to get some wood (you have an axe!), build a crafting bench on your inventory screen and get to making a small dwelling.
Or dig into the earth and hide like most of us did our first time.

I mean for me, I gotta cross the world to reach the dungeon, which is beyond the meteor I found. That meteor was the worst fight yet due to those damn meteor heads. So many and from all directions. Can't switch between pick and gold sword fast enough.

Only a certain amount of those meteor heads can be on screen at once. So get them all on one side of you, and then keep mining. The pick should keep knocking them back.
Also, I died far more in the jungle than in the dungeon with the same gear.
the jungle provides jungle armor, which is the best armor for using spells; the blade of grass, which is an okay sword and a component of the night's edge; various jungle shrine items that either boost your movement speed, attack speed, or can be used as a weapon and to make grass grow
it's also where you get the components to make the ivy whip, which is an upgrade of the chain hook and very useful
The ivy whip is reason enough to hit the jungle... took me forever to farm the whole jungle set I kept getting boots non stop but the other pieces wouldn't drop.
Is there any real use for a demon altar? Found one of those already, though I've yet to come across anything half decent yet. I'd say the "best" thing I've found so far has been the horseshoe and a few potions...

Crossing the world doesn't really take that long. It takes a lot longer to get to hell. I've started to just build a skybridge to get to certain points and it makes travel faster plus it looks cool.

Skybridges can reduce meteor ore if it happens to hit them. Ask me how I learned this.
I loved this game for the first 10 hours, but now I'm kinda tired of hitting inert material with a pick axe.
Sounds like you got your moneys worth at least. I would just wait for the next patch. Each one seems to be adding more and more content. It'll be interesting to see where Terraria is in a year.
I'd say that hell is harder than the dungeon, but much less so after 1.0.5. The way spawns used to work, you could get unlucky and get all bone dragons. Plus, fire imps are way less of a hassle after the recent nerf to their fire rate. The only thing to worry about now are the lava slimes.
The worst part of the dungeon is those cursed skulls, but they're more irritating than lethal.
bone dragons and fire imps whose spells gave hearts were way easier to deal with than the combination of hell slimes, hellbats, bone serpents, and fire imps
demons aren't all that bad
although, I think the main thing that has made hell harder is the change to way ash works
The new potion cooldown change does not amuse me. Some of us play this game singleplayer. I don't want to try soloing a dungeon or mining hellstone when you can only use one potion a minute. I imagine it goes rather insanely poorly until you have the best gear in the game, including the shit you're trying to get during this exercise.

Is there a good place to get started?
Just start digging!
For those that want to know, it was
Also, almost reached the hell areas. How do I not die a bunch there?

Go on back up, beat the Eater of Worlds, go through the Jungle and maybe explore the dungeon.
Hell is the endgame.

maybe even before the jungle
Really? THat seems odd, really.

I'm pretty sure hell is as far from the surface vertically as the dungeon is far from the spawn horizontally
Also, I died far more in the jungle than in the dungeon with the same gear.
The way I played it, I went to hell to get all the best weapons and armor, and then I fought the skull guy. I never even went to the jungle.

I get those jugle roses for crafting, but overall, pretty lame. Am I missing something?
See, I can fall to the bottom of my shaft or I walk to the dungeon.
Falling is faster and safer since I take no fall damage and the magic mirror gets me back on top in a second.

edit meant to say jungle not dungeon

you could try using more health rings
