Oh, just one more thing, ma'am. Peter Falk dead at age 83

Man. This guy was a brilliant actor. He was in my favorite movie of all time, The Princess Bride. He is in one of my favorite shows of all time, Columbo. And now he is... senselessly... dead, at the age of 83. Natural causes, as far as I can tell.

He was a cancer survivor -- he had a tumor removed, and lost his eye as a result. He was famously told by a casting director that for the same price, he could get an actor with two eyes.

But then, I say, he wouldn't have Peter Falk.

Later in his life, he suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's.

Columbo marathon this weekend, as well as attempting to fill the gaps of any movies of his that I missed somehow.

I shouldn't be this sad about a death from natural causes.

I haven't seen Princess Bride, but my family loved Columbo. We actually named our dog after the character--which, in retrospect, wasn't really fitting, since he looked smart but was actually stupid.

Man, I was just waiting for this happen. Still really, really sad though.

And I weep for your childhood, deprived of such a quality film as Bao Gao Ban Zhang, the greatest armed forces satirical film ever.

I'll take your recommendation into consideration.

I wondered if such a thing was genuinely ironic, or simply contrary to what you'd expect. My dog is at least 11 right now, so it's kind of surprising he outlived the real Columbo.

    Good night, sweet prince.

It's called A Stitch in Time. Columbo actually loses his cool during this episode and it makes for one of the most dramatic episodes of the show.

Also, I guess you could forget The Princess Bride... if you weren't interested in:

    1)
    andre-giant.jpg

Andre the Giant as, well, a giant who kidnaps people and tries to throw rocks at their heads until they agree to a hand-to-hand encounter with him.

    2)
    Princess-bride-cary-elwes-dread-pirate-roberts.jpg

Carey Elwes as a dashing, daring Dread Pirate who is witty, sarcastic, and tons of fun to watch when swordfighting --

    3)
    indigo-montoya.jpg

Mandy Patinin as Inigo, a Spaniard whose father was an expert sword crafter; he was commissioned to make a sword for a man with six fingers, and upon completion the six-fingered man demanded the sword for 1/10 the price. When Inigo's father refused, the six-fingered man stabbed him in the heart and took the sword anyway, and left Inigo with 2 scars on his face. Inigo swore revenge and has been seeking it for years, and in the meantime has become a brilliant swordsman.

    4)
Oh yeah, Wallace Shawn is in this movie too. You know, the guy who plays Mr. Incredible's boss and Rex from Toy Story?

    5)
    PrincessBride43.jpeg

And, best of all, Peter Falk as the grandfather you fucking wish you had when you were a kid.

And that's not even all. There's poison, swamps filled with Rats of Unusual Size and huge, unexpected brushes with flames, and torture. There's Billy Damn Crystal as a henpecked Miracle Man. There's the best god damn revenge scene in the history of cinema. There's weddings crashed, Cliffs of Insanity, and, last but certainly not least, True Love.

I guess I just don't understand not being interested in this movie. Is it the title?

I'm saddened to hear that Peter Falk has passed away. Granted all I really knew him for was Columbo and his appearance in the Princess Bride, but both were very enjoyable shows that I do like watching from time to time.

I shall have to watch an episode of Columbo tonight in honour of the man who gave us the world's scruffiest and most persistent detective.

There is a major problem with this thread, insofar that it doesn't mention Peter Falk's best movie (and an altogether amazing movie, at that): Murder By Death.

It's a mansion murder mystery starring tons of wonderfully famous actors riffing off of other famous detective movies. Falk plays Sam Diamond, and genius sendup of Sam Spade and a great Humphrey Bogart impression.

I should ammend it--by dog standards, my dog is not actually stupid. People standards, sure. But by dog standards, he's rather absent minded, even around things he loves, like food or things he chews on.

By contrast, he's some sort of Carolina Dog mutt, so he looks like a small wolf/German Shepard mix--i.e. maybe not smart, but rather alert.
