[Bioware password reset email] Is this legit?

SmrtnikSmrtnik Registered User regular
Just got this in my email:
We recently learned that hackers gained unauthorized access to the decade-old BioWare server system supporting the Neverwinter Nights forums. We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers’ data and launched a thorough ongoing evaluation of the breach. We have determined that no credit card data was compromised from the servers, nor did we ever have or store sensitive data like social security numbers. Our investigation shows that information such as user names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, mailing addresses, names, phone numbers, CD keys and birth dates from these forum accounts on the system may have been compromised, as well as other information (if any) that you may have associated with your EA Account. In an abundance of caution, we have changed your password to ensure account security. Please visit this https://www.ea.com/<url redacted>&locale=en_US to reset your password immediately.

If your link has expired, click here to generate a new email.

We take the security of your information very seriously and regret any inconvenience this may have caused you. If your username, email address and/or password on your EA account are similar to those you use on other sites, we recommend changing the password at those sites as well. We advise all of our fans to always be aware of any suspicious emails or account activity and report any suspicious emails and account activity to Customer Support at 1-877-357-6007.

If you have questions, please visit our FAQ at http://support.ea.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5367/ or contact Customer Support at the phone number above.

Yes, EA was hacked. Is this email legit? Don't know, hover over the link before clicking it to make sure the actual URL matches the posted URL.

This thread scared me at first since I opened the link too before realizing it might be a scam. Searched around the bioware forums to see if it was legit. http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/7718169/2. There's a moderator on the 2nd page that says it's legit.

It's not working too well, in the time it takes for me to click the link and email to arrive the link expires each time.

Honestly it's been so long I can't even remember what my NwN password is... or my username for that matter.

Glad this was brought up. Maybe someone can tell me if I actually need to care about this.

I don't have any sort of account relevant to NWN, which is what this is about. None the less, I got this e-mail, I guess since I have a BioWare account/EA account I used to get Mass Effect DLC.

Do I need to actually care about this? I've already started changing passwords, but it's proving to be a pain in the ass with some sites, and I'd rather just forget it.

We don't even care... whether we care or not...

Well it only applies to very old accounts.

Which is why I got an email but not to the email that's actually tied to my CURRENT EA account. Which was confusing when I was told that I had to upgrade and that the username was taken.

Thanks for forcing me to merge my Bioware account, EA. :?

Never click the link, go to the site independently if you need to then do something. Its the same as a phone, dont give your information out to someone who calls you, and dont call a number from a letter, always get the number independently from another source and call that.

An update on page 8 of the linked thread says:
As a security precaution the latest email went out to all BioWare account holders regardless of game ownership. If there was an EA account attached to your BioWare account EA has reset the passwords for those accounts. If you are having any problems with your account or password please call EA Support as they are there to help: 1-877-357-6007.

We really appreciate your support and are focused on having everything remediated as soon as possible.

What's "very old"? My account dates back to the original NWN, pre-expansions. I registered initially to post on the Builder's forums.

let's not blow this out of proportion; you wouldn't execute someone for fishing personal information out of some dumpster - the only difference here is the online methodology. it's a crime, yes, but not a capital one.

if some hacker shut down a water treatment plant and ended up sickening thousands, we wouldn't put him in jail for hacking, we'd put him in jail for sickening thousands.

I think the punishment should fit the crime. They should be given one million accounts on at least ten different sites that they must come up with distinct and secure user names and passwords for each one. Anytime this criteria is not met, another 10k is added.

I found the email strange. If this was tied to the NWN database, then my user email was abuse@aol.com. Back in those days they weren't sending verification emails and I didn't want any of the crap they sent.

In most cases, I agree. It's a crime like burglary or bank fraud. Wrong, should be punished, nothing to be responded to with death.

But these odious little ticks do get under my skin more than the standard.

I mean, most crime is done for the money. I disagree with the actions and in no way endorse them, but I can sympathize. I mean, I like money. Then there's things like Wikileaks or Anonymous where there's usually at least a semblance of matters of principle involved, where no matter how much I disagree with the actions, and sometimes the reasoning, I can see the purpose and could, if I had to, write a defense that wouldn't make me want to kill myself.

Objectively, of course, I know that capital punishment would be unwarranted.

All I can say is this:

    - I've had a Bioware account since NWN originally came out.
    - I never got any email from EA or Bioware asking me to reset anything.
    - I just successfully logged into my Bioware account with the same info I have always used.
    - I just successfully logged into my EA/Origin account with the same EA account info I have always used.

One curious thing, though, is that my "Signup Date" on my Bioware profile is listed as "2009-10-18" which isn't correct. Probably something to do with EA/Bioware account linking.

To update, I talked to support again and they can change the email on the account for you. I don't know why the guy didn't do this the first time, because now I've got two separate accounts, one with BF2142, one with BF:BC2, and my soldier was wiped in the process.

My favourite moment during my dealings with EA support is when I was suddenly put on hold mid-sentence. Look, I understand your English is so broken you can't actually understand my issue and you need to get someone else to help me, but you fucking say 'Please hold' or something instead of just putting me on hold while I'm in the middle of explaining something to you.

"So, I'm unable to log in to my old account because of the---" *Music starts playing*
