We recently learned that hackers gained unauthorized access to the decade-old BioWare server system supporting the Neverwinter Nights forums. We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers’ data and launched a thorough ongoing evaluation of the breach. We have determined that no credit card data was compromised from the servers, nor did we ever have or store sensitive data like social security numbers. Our investigation shows that information such as user names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, mailing addresses, names, phone numbers, CD keys and birth dates from these forum accounts on the system may have been compromised, as well as other information (if any) that you may have associated with your EA Account. In an abundance of caution, we have changed your password to ensure account security. Please visit this
https://www.ea.com/<url redacted>&locale=en_US to reset your password immediately.

We take the security of your information very seriously and regret any inconvenience this may have caused you. If your username, email address and/or password on your EA account are similar to those you use on other sites, we recommend changing the password at those sites as well. We advise all of our fans to always be aware of any suspicious emails or account activity and report any suspicious emails and account activity to Customer Support at 1-877-357-6007.

Obviously the real question is: Is it too legit
Honestly it's been so long I can't even remember what my NwN password is... or my username for that matter.
# paweaboo Talk about the animu's with friendly people on SLASHnet.
I don't have any sort of account relevant to NWN, which is what this is about. None the less, I got this e-mail, I guess since I have a BioWare account/EA account I used to get Mass Effect DLC.
Do I need to actually care about this? I've already started changing passwords, but it's proving to be a pain in the ass with some sites, and I'd rather just forget it.
Well it only applies to very old accounts.
Which is why I got an email but not to the email that's actually tied to my CURRENT EA account. Which was confusing when I was told that I had to upgrade and that the username was taken.
Thanks for forcing me to merge my Bioware account, EA. :?

An update on page 8 of the linked thread says:
What's "very old"? My account dates back to the original NWN, pre-expansions. I registered initially to post on the Builder's forums.

Ask and thou shalt receive.
Ya I got the email too, the inclusion of the name Aaryn Flynn threw me off. I guess its legit though.
Too legit to quit
Thanks!
I'm un-legit
And for that, I must quit.

let's not blow this out of proportion; you wouldn't execute someone for fishing personal information out of some dumpster - the only difference here is the online methodology. it's a crime, yes, but not a capital one.
if some hacker shut down a water treatment plant and ended up sickening thousands, we wouldn't put him in jail for hacking, we'd put him in jail for sickening thousands.

Um, these hackers made people change their passwords, dude. Are you saying that this shouldn't be a capital offense? Are you saying people shouldn't be executed on sight for this kind of thing? Give me a break.
you make an excellent point; i now see the error of my ways and retract my statement.

But the email reached my account registered for dragon age and mass effect.
Sort of wonder if this is a way to make people visit the site and see the Origin stuff.
In most cases, I agree. It's a crime like burglary or bank fraud. Wrong, should be punished, nothing to be responded to with death.
But these odious little ticks do get under my skin more than the standard.
I mean, most crime is done for the money. I disagree with the actions and in no way endorse them, but I can sympathize. I mean, I like money. Then there's things like Wikileaks or Anonymous where there's usually at least a semblance of matters of principle involved, where no matter how much I disagree with the actions, and sometimes the reasoning, I can see the purpose and could, if I had to, write a defense that wouldn't make me want to kill myself.
Here?
Self righteousness of the most disgusting kind combined with a lack of any real ethics, even in an odd or stunted direction. Pride in its vilest and most unwarranted form. Worst, they act like people should be grateful for their heinous little snits.
No particular competence, no class, no connection to common humanity in any redemptive way.
Objectively, of course, I know that capital punishment would be unwarranted.
On a purely personal level, I would probably be pleased (as wrong as that is) to pick up a newspaper with "All members of Lulsec found flayed to death, experts state it was definitely 'more painful than humanly imaginable'"
Think if I have all my linked game serials on hand they can send me a password reset to another email address or something?
Nope.
Same thing happened to me, and all EA Support could do was issue me a new key for the game I "lost" this way. The old account is still tied to a non-existent email address, inaccessible.
From what I understand from the email, the NWN database was hacked, and EA decided to be paranoid and reset the passwords of everyone with any EA account regardless of when it was created and what it was tied to.
What the fuck, man? Did these people threaten your life in any way? Did they harm your well being? At the most they inconvenienced you or someone you know.
I'm not saying a crime isn't a crime, but wishing death on a bunch of pranksters is insane.
All I can say is this:
- I've had a Bioware account since NWN originally came out.
- I never got any email from EA or Bioware asking me to reset anything.
- I just successfully logged into my Bioware account with the same info I have always used.
- I just successfully logged into my EA/Origin account with the same EA account info I have always used.
One curious thing, though, is that my "Signup Date" on my Bioware profile is listed as "2009-10-18" which isn't correct. Probably something to do with EA/Bioware account linking.
To update, I talked to support again and they can change the email on the account for you. I don't know why the guy didn't do this the first time, because now I've got two separate accounts, one with BF2142, one with BF:BC2, and my soldier was wiped in the process.
My favourite moment during my dealings with EA support is when I was suddenly put on hold mid-sentence. Look, I understand your English is so broken you can't actually understand my issue and you need to get someone else to help me, but you fucking say 'Please hold' or something instead of just putting me on hold while I'm in the middle of explaining something to you.
"So, I'm unable to log in to my old account because of the---" *Music starts playing*
"Umm.. okay."
Lol, I didn't think I would need to spell out I wasn't being serious... but here it goes... No I do not actually think people should be killed for causing a slight inconvenience to me. People on even arguably sane forums take the strangest shit seriously sometimes.

I figured you were being facetious, but this other dude doesn't seem to be.
