but the companies he has worked third shift for, knocking out 12 hour days all week gave him fuck all for all his effort
he'll do the best he can, and has for years. currently, i'm working with him. every eight hour day we put in is essentially like a thirteen and a half hour day due to the drives we log each day

i get paid ten dollars and some change and that's considered good where i'm at for a factory
he's salary and earns about 1200 when you subtract taxes (every two weeks)
it is nothing but slugging it out. he says communication is key, but invests more in the workers because the management looks out only for themselves, and there's a lot of exclusivity with owners and management
if you wanna take initiative and move up in the company, sure. you'll get promotions with no pay increase and a longer work day

I'm retreating from the 'company man' term, what I meant was have a good relationship with your managers/supervisors and don't be dissing them publicly
Look at every promotion not just in terms of dollar value, but also in terms of connections you establish and exelrience you gain. You can put that new position on paper and it looks fucking good
Has it reached a stage in America where it's impossible to reach a management position from the coal face? It's got harder to do that here, no doubt, but is still possible and people do. Our best managers (4 out of 7) all started out on the shop floor.
If you get that position and they pay you below the odds make your bones and then move to somewhere that will paythe money
I can only work from the context of construction/fabrication/mining. Shit might be completely different working in the city, at an IT job or whatever

My grandpa ran away from home when he was 13 (his dad was a traveling musician, in a mariachi band, who didn't provide well and wasn't home most of the time). He had a whole backpack with him. And now he is comfortably retired (has been, since his 50s) and drives a big-ass truck and watches soccer all day on his big-screen tel. He eats a few tortillas with an avocado and beer and little else and keeps on truckin', not givin' a fuck.
I hope to be like that someday.
