Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Descent was my very first online experience, and my first foray into using a keyboard for first person shooters. I spent a large majority of my afternoons dialing up my friends on my sweet 24 baud modem and shooting some mining robots.
Naturally I was stoked at the news, but it seems to be for naught, there's been no news of this sense.
Anyway let's lament this fact on the eve of the Wii as the Wii U approaches, and let's just talk about how awesome descent is.
Also I guess y'all can talk about Freespace even though I never really played it. I GUESS.
Man, I've not played this in forever. After the copy of.. PC Format (I think, that or PC Zone) carried the demo on two floppy discs on the front, complete with an apology over including only one demo at a massive 6mb, I was absolutely hooked. Then when I got a copy of the full thing, it consumed my dad who would play it obsessively. So awesome. Really need to get a copy from GoG, now.
I've been playing the hell out of Descent and Descent II lately using the Rebirth source port. They both are still incredible games and hold up extremely well today, just as they did when I got the first one bundled with my 3DFX Voodoo card on release. The freedom of movement and sense of speed really has me spoiled. It's hard for me to even play newer 2 axis games lately.
So, the big question is when are we scheduling some multiplayer? I used to play a ton of Descent 2 Deathmatch during work at my very first tech support job, and I recently heard that it also has coop. The thought of 8 Material Defenders swooping around blowing the holy bajeezus out of mining robots certainly puts a huge smile on my face.

I'd be more interested in a WiiU port of the Freespace games. Make the little pad's display resemble the control panel of the spacecraft with the engine/weapon/shield outputs and such.
I'm looking forward to the day when a wider range of gamers can understand just how intense the words "DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT" can be.
Oh man, Descent. In 5th grade, my teacher used to let me stay in the classroom during lunch, by myself, and play Descent on the classroom Mac. Good memories. I really hope it gets ported.

I was pumped for this last year, but I've since given up hope. The homebrew DS port was decent, but crashed often; I gave up around level 18-19 due to some insurmountable bug.
Still, if it was on the WiiU at launch? Fuck Mario, I'm buying it for Material Defender.
Yeah, after MDK2 got ported I started thinking about this again. I'd kill to play descent on my widescreen TV. Might just get the sourceports though and play them on the lappy instead.

descent
and descent 2
(let us not speak of descent 3)
Expecting anything more from it is like expecting a newly-born kitten to do high-level calculus.

Don't you come in here with your knowledge and your words.
Deny thy name or I'll no longer be a Catapult. Or whatever.
