Took the plunge. Century of Sand is currently being processed onto the Kindle store. Be still, my vomity tummy.

You'll knock 'em dead, ruz! :^:

I'll henceforth badger everyone I know with a Kindle to give it a read.

...which is pretty much everyone I know.

    Good luck, Ruz!

My girlfriend actually won a Kindle Fire through some contest recently and gave it to me since she already has a tablet, so I'll have to start grabbing up these kindle books from TWB-ites now that I can read them comfortably!

If the universe makes any sense at all, ruzkin, it'll do just fine.

On a different note, I'm taking a class and the instructor is setting my teeth on edge with his ready-bake writing formula. Any advice on how to turn off my critical faculties so I can absorb the useful bits of what he's talking about?

Current project: Old Man Hero, a graphic novel in three parts

Listen and absorb all input dispassionately, and then analyse it later in your own time; think of it as a thought exercise where you're being bombarded with all sorts of opinions and approaches with the goal of learning about them, not rationalising them. If you find that advice is useful and you can do something constructive with it, great. Conversely if you end up thinking "that's crap!" you can reject it accordingly!

Ruz, that is a bitching cover. And what I've read from CoS so far is fantastic, so you will probably be rolling in digital money before long. And then maybe physical money. :P

Thanks, bros and broettes :) The book just went live. I couldn't be happier with that cover.

I just sent off my first query letter (and thanks for the advice, you guys) and now I feel like I just called that hot girl and left a message on her voicemail and wish I could reach through the internet and take it all back so I can return to just sort of moon-eying her from a distant corner, happy in my little shadow of anonymity.

Way to go, Jeffe! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm getting ready to send out some new queries soon, too, now that I've revised my letter.

Hey all. I don't know if you remember me since it's been about two years since I posted here, but I think I will come back now. I've accomplished very little writing over the past two years, and a great deal of pretending to write, so I need to hear from productive people about how productive they've been to make me feel bad about myself. Thanks in advance for helping.

Ruz is on pace to publish more words than Dickens, Wank is winning all kinds of awards, Orikae has a fancy pants new website that we're all contributing to and Time magazine recently reported that Baron is actually Thomas Pynchon. Now write, darn you, write!

  • ruzkinruzkin Registered User regular
How many words did Dickens publish? Because yeah, by putting CoS up I've hit 330,000 words on the Kindle store. That's a STUPID number of words.

That's a pretty good start. Glad the people here are doing well. How are you finding the digital book sale business, Ruz?

Aaaalmost. First I need to get my sales up to day-job levels, and then wait 2/3 months for the cheques to arrive, and THEN I quit.

I'm also trying to stay relatively humble because shit, maybe I got lucky with titles, or covers, or pricing, and if folk here try to do what I've done and it doesn't work out for whatever reason I don't want to be the arsehole who got their hopes up. Then again, maybe they hit it even bigger than I have and they Konrath their way into a gold-plated castle.

How many free downloads do you suppose it takes to build the Konrath momentum?

Sometimes I blog. Other times I tweet. But I'm always writing. (and so is that other Amalia)

Don't forget that Konrath was pubbed traditionally first.

I'd prefer my castle to be gold all the way through. You know, in case it gets scuffed.

Konrath has stated many times that his e-momentum was entirely divorced from his crash-and-burn traditional career.

Consensus among e-pubbers is that once you have around 10 solid $2.99 or above titles up, each with a pro cover and 10 or more great reviews each, then you can promo one and watch sales feed into all the others like clockwork. Until you have a solid base of titles, then a promo on one will lead nowhere.

How the hell am I supposed to write stuff in Standard Manuscript Format when Open Office just keeps breaking the formatting every time I save? This is really frustrating, any other programs that won't just break the formatting?

It's been a whole weekend and I do not have 37 agents begging to represent me. Something must be wrong. I should probably send them all daily follow-ups to remind them that I am totally awesome.

Call them! They really love that. They have so little work to do and get so lonely.

In other news, I just got rejected from a place with like... A 70% acceptance rate. Go me! No seriously, go, that is embarrassing.

If it makes all you people feel better, I just got a response on a query I had sent in October of 2010, saying "sorry, you got caught in the spam filter, if you're still looking for representation, please requery."

    Awesome.

Man, that's terrible. If I accidentally accepted something from someone, I don't think I'd have the heart to send a follow-up that said, "Just kidding, lol!" I would probably just publish the work, even if it was abjectly awful and would lead to the decline and ultimate death of my publication, just because goddamn.
