The number of notifications you have. When someone posts in a thread you have bookmarked, you get a notification. When someone pings you, like so - @DouglasDanger - you get a notification. When someone posts in a thread you made, you get a notification. Etc etc.

It seems to me that you can only do that from the forum index to mark an entire forum as read. It's the same place the dismiss drop down is.

I agree. I guess the "Awesome" button might not immediately be obvious from its icon, but they could add alt text or something. As it is, I don't even know what the hell that font is supposed to match up with.
