Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Rules Thread - Read Before Posting!

WE HOLD THESE RULES TO BE SELF EVIDENT:

Welcome to the Artist's Corner, a meeting ground of minds and talent that serve three essential roles:
  • to recieve helpful advice and criticism of your art in an effort to improve your craft
  • to take part in group activities such as contests, practices, coloring threads, etc.
  • to participate in forum discussions ranging from art techniques, tutorials, and art supplies to just simple social chatter in the chat thread
However, it is not a showcase for people to blindly pat you on the back, or offer up the kind of empty priase you would find on Mom's fridge. If you can't take harsh advice, beware. Though you may be offended at the notion of someone suggesting your art is less than sublime, we are trying to help you. No one would say your anatomy sucks unless your anatomy sucks.

NOTE: Jerry and Mike don't really read the forum much. If you're trying to get in touch with them, you're better off sending them an e-mail.

1 ) Please Lurk First!
This rule can't be stressed enough, lurk for a bit (especially if you're unsure about any of this). Lurking is the best way to get the hang of how the ebb and flow of the community works. Note what sorts of threads get locked. Just reading the forum for a couple days can offer you insights into acceptable behavior that no amount of rules ever will... except for, you know, this one.

2 ) Do Not Troll
Trolling will not be acceptable, nor will trolling just inside the posted rules. If someone's art sucks a pipe, then give 'em some advice on how to grow as an artist. Despite how good you may be now, you sucked at some point, too. This applies to everyone. If you don't have anything helpful or constructive to say, take it to the chat thread or PMs.
Acceptable: 'Wow, that color job really sucks the pipe. Try defining your light source before you start, and don't choose such saturated colors.'
Not Acceptable: 'It looks like butt.'

NOTE:
This includes threadshitting. This is classified as anything from derailing an existing thread, to making useless posts in a thread already in violation of the rules.

3 ) Attention to NSFW Material
Nudity in art is acceptable (within reason), but please ensure it is clearly labeled NSFW (Not Safe For Work) in the thread title, for some of us browse the forums from work. If in the doodle thread or anywhere that NSFW material is not globally marked, please link to images people may find offensive and label the link as such. Remember the old adage: When in doubt, ask a Mod first.

4 ) Avoid Erroneous New Topics
Before posting a New Topic, decide if what you have really warrants a whole topic to itself. We have three useful threads you should be aware of:
  • The Doodle Thread
  • The Chat thread
  • The Questions/Discussion Thread
If you want advice on a quick sketch, unfinished work, or just want to show off something that didn't take much effort, use the Doodle thread. If you've just got a general question to ask, drop it in the Questions/Discussion thread. Otherwise, if you just feel like being social, swing by the Chat thread. New topics with no art in them are extremely likely to get locked, so keep that in mind.

The Doodle Thread can be identified by the word 'Doodle' worked into it's title somewhere, and like the Q/D thread, it is always sticked. The Chat Thread can be found by indentifying the thread with "CHAT" in the title. It usually hovers near the top of the page.

5 ) Post Your Own Work
If your pal is an awesome artist, then encourage him/her to sign up and post the art him/herself. Don't post artwork on someone else's behalf and demand critique.

6 ) Do Not Post Ambiguous Critiques
Words like 'wonky' and 'odd' do not do anyone any good. If you feel that something looks out of place, you need to explain why and a possible solution to the problem. Otherwise, your critique is pointless, unhelpful and therefore unwanted.

7 ) No Site-Whoring
Site-whoring, plugging, or advertising of your personal Website, product, or Webcomic any kind will not be tolerated. You can include a link to your site/gallery in your sig, but do not start a new thread simply directing people to your site.

Asking for help with Website design/layout is acceptable as long as users are not required to navigate out of the forum to see your site (take a screenshot). Remember: we are artists, not programmers.

8 ) Signature and Avatar Size
The highly recommended maximum size for signature images is 500x80 pixels, and most sig images should be kept below 20KB. Text signatures should not exceed 6 lines of normal sized text. Avatar images on the forums are 64x64 pixels, and the recommended maximum size for avatars is 6KB. Not everybody has high-speed Internet and nobody will miss the mini movie under your name or posts.

9 ) No New Threads About Graphic Tablets
If you need to know anything about graphic tablets or WACOMS, ask in the Questions/Discussion thread.

10 ) Do Not Ask for Art in a New Thread
Do not start new threads to ask for free art, tattoo designs, Websites, etc. If you wish to commission paid work, ask in the CHAT or Questions/Discussion thread.

11 ) Most Importantly: Have fun!
Welcome to the Penny-Arcade Artist's Corner and remember to ask the moderators about anything you have a concern with. We are here to help.

12 ) No NSFW In The Doodle/Photo/Chat Threads
Unfortunately, we have many members who like to be able to view the forum while they are at their day jobs in several different offices. In order for them to do this safely, they need to be able to go into common threads and not have to worry about somebody walking passed their screen to find a naked woman or man on the screen. If you are going to post nude drawings/photos in either the doodle, photo, or chat threads then please just link the images and mark the post with the NSFW tag in order to protect our members.

If you wish to post inline NSFW material then do so in your own thread but make sure the thread is marked as such.

13 ) Zuda links are verboten.Threads
If you want to promote your totally awesome Zuda comic, do it in your sig, but threads asking for votes will be locked and the authors shot out of a cannon. If a cannon is unavailable, a moderator will say something witty and biting in hopes it's embarrassing enough you'll wish you were shot out of a cannon instead.

(As always, self promotion of websites or, in this case, Zuda links, in sigs and profiles is acceptable and highly encouraged).

Special Tube Edit: If you commission someone on the forums to do a piece of art for you and you then do not pay them or break off contact without an incredibly good reason, this is not a forum you will be able to post on any more.
