    When you're following an angel
Does it mean you have to throw your body off a building?
Somewhere they're meeting on a pinhead
Calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things
I heard they had a space program
When they sing you can't hear, there's no air
Sometimes I think I kind of like that and
Other times I think I'm already there

They Might Be Giants was the first non-weird al music I got into

I remember in freshman year of high school, pepsi was having a promotion with apple where something like 1 in every 3 pepsi bottlecaps had a code that let you download a free song from iTunes

Our school had pepsi vending machines, so me and a friend went digging through all the trash cans at the end of every school day to get free music

I ended up with enough bottlecaps to get the entire TMBG discography up to The Spine for free

about a week after the promotion ended I learned that most people just used limewire when they wanted music but didn't want to pay for it

    Obligatory old person post.

You had iTunes when you were a freshman in highschool!!!!??

  • Speed RacerSpeed Racer Rose, shut the hell up about my bedroom and save my game already!Registered User regular
    That was in 2003

    so yes

it was still relatively new though?!

If I remember right there was a commercial for the contest that was really weird

it had that young girl that got sued by the RIAA, or at least an actor playing her or something, talking about how now thanks to PEPSICOLA CO she could totally stick it to the man and download all the free music she wanted

  • ThreeCubedThreeCubed Registered User
Ok, that's not so bad. I think I just didn't realize that iTunes is that old. I don't know why I didn't realize that.

I bought the 'Here Comes Science' album for my young nephews a year or more ago. One of them knows all the lyrics to all the songs now.

    its good stuff, really

The best thing is that the Sun song is actually a re-write to update it to correct science. They had a song called "The Sun is a mass of incandescent Gas" and realized they were wrong.

Actually the original was a cover, so technically the guy they covered was wrong.

Also Join Us is great, When Will You Die is my favorite.

    FUCK YES
i knew this forum would come through for me and have a TMBG thread. i reeeally really like Join Us- probably a little bit more than the else, but i've been going back through their other records recently and forgot how many awesome songs are on that record

There's only one thing that I know how to do well
And I've often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
    And that's be you
    Do what you like
    be like yourself
And so I'm having a wonderful time
But I'd rather be Whistling in the Dark

TMBG was one of the first CDs I think I've owned (was never a big CD buying guy) I might have to get this.

I didn't really like Spoiler Alert at all the first time I heard it but it's grown on me every time I've listened and now I like it a lot

Flannsburg kind of drowns Linnell out for most of the song though

Oh snap, this is my chance to point out an interesting bit of trivia in response to the OP's Istanbul Youtube post, especially the line "Why they changed it, I can't say."

Well, it was changed to Istanbul because, given how prevalent Constantinople was at the time, people often referred to it simply as "the city." A common way to reference something happening in Constantinople was to reference it as happening "in the city."

The Greek phrase for "in the city," as far as the phonemes go, sounds like "Istanbul" (if you soften up the consonants a bit). Eis ten polis

Basically, people in Constantinople simply started referring to Constantinople the way local Greeks did.

my favorite part of this is Linnell shouting "What the hell" twice in the background.

TMBG has been one of my favorite bands since I first got into them back in the mid 90's. I find it remarkable that they've managed to evolve and change so much while remaining consistently excellent. I love a lot of their early stuff for its peculiar, raw, anxious energy, but the slow metamorphosis to a more full-fledged rock sound (with a real band and everything!) hasn't diminished their creative songwriting style. It's different music, but equally good I'd say.

Hoping to make it to their show here in Ithaca this September!

    Oh shit!

I just listened to the album with headphones for the first time. Spoiler Alert is actually two completely different songs. Linnell in the right and Flansy in the left.

He's a good friend of mine! I needed to find someone that was okay with walking around all weekend in their underwear, and I knew he was strange enough to do it.

Also helped that he's kind of a big dude. I was really happy to see all of that jiggling in slow motion.

  • Speed RacerSpeed Racer Rose, shut the hell up about my bedroom and save my game already!Registered User regular
the slow motion jiggling is definitely one of the best parts of it

also I just love how banal and dumb the reason is for the character's mental breakdown. It fits the song well!
