We had an incident with our cat after we had had her for a few months. Her litter ran out so I got a different brand from Wal-Mart instead of her usual Costco brand. Apparently our little princess requires just the right consistency of litter, otherwise she won't use it. She just started peeing and pooping on the laminate floor right outside her litterbox.
It made for a pretty interesting week until we finally figured out why she was doing it. And the smell did last a while, mostly because the urine had soaked into the baseboard. Luckily I was able to remove the baseboard, wash it thoroughly, and get everything back to normal.

We are extremely fortunate, as Mori doesn't actually change the litter box all that often, but our cats apparently don't mind! (We have it outside on our balcony, so the smell doesn't infiltrate).
Obviously when it was inside I was changing it every day (or at least scooping out the poop and topping it up every day).
One of our cats is slightly too beefy for the cat tree - which means that sometimes she sleeps with her appendages dangling off the side
That's yet another reason I could never own a cat: that smell is near-permanent. I don't know how you cat folks put up with it!
Ive had cats most of my life and never heard of this problem before.
The pee smell is really bad when changing the litter box though. Way more overpowering than the poop smell since that seems to disipate after a bit.

If you neuter your cat before maturity, the ph of their urine is much different and tends to smell much less. Most times, unless I'm changing the box the smell is pretty much entirely contained assuming you are properly changing out litter.

i rarely detect a 'cat smell' anywhere
i have a buddy with five cats and his apartment smells totally normal, sorta floral even. it's possible i'm just so used to cat stench i don't notice it, but i'd be more inclined to think that's just people being crappy at minimizing it
read something about how rats and mice infected by the toxoplasma gondii parasite are attracted to the smell of cat urine, rather than fearful of it like they'd normally be
this works in its favor, because it reproduces in cats' intestines. the infected rodents hang around cat piss then get eaten by cats
the parasite can also infect humans and has been linked to slower reaction times, increased risk of traffic accidents, and schizophrenia
the point of the article I read was that it might have a similar effect in humans as it does in rodents as far as attraction to the scent of cat urine goes, and so it could factor into why some people have shitload of cats and aren't put off by the smell
studies have confirmed a correlation between toxoplasmosis in humans and certain behaviors (like having a ton of cats), but they haven't proven a causal relationship yet

Cute picture. The 'random leg' hanging out in midair is something I love about our cats.
It's amazing how comfortable cats can look and be in the most uncomfortable positions!
Rabbits like to do that too!
She decided to nap in a too-small-to-lay-in litter pan, and her head was just hanging off the edge. She was also very offended when i went to check on her, apparently that was an extremely comfortable spot and silly human for disturbing her sleep.

My kitteh doesn't smell. If you clean the litterbox like you should, or if your kitteh is toilet trained, then it shouldn't a problem.
I live in a building full of dog owners. Let me tell you, if it's a warm day, walking a block in any direction I will be surrounded by clouds of dog piss smell. It's fucking disgusting.

Febreeze. It works perfectly.
We don't have to because we change their litter.

one of the few things it's actually good for

What if the reason cats just lie about all day is because they can browse the internet with their mind
It would explain so much about both cats and the internet
WOULDNT THAT BE WACKY!
That also explains the explosion of trolling online. Cats do like to play with their prey, after all.
