Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
So Texas is on fire, I guess

Tuesday morning when I was heading out to work I saw what looked like fog. Opening the door, it smelled like smoke. And the cloud-cover I thought was over us was actually smoke plumes. It was all over the town and it was from another town 30 miles away or so that caught fire on Monday, but from what a coworker told me it was just open grass area and not like, the actual town. All the smoke was gone by the early afternoon.
Today, just now actually, my mother gives me this call and is in like some goddamn frenzy about how I need to pack things up and evacuate, because she's just become aware of the fires. What triggered this for her is another county south of us getting evacuated, portions of at least. She's huge into panicking and worrying (if it rains, she asks me if it has flooded). I mean, fires are scary and all and I'm keeping alert, but we're not in any danger just yet. Oh and then she managed to tie it into politics because she's a goddamn nut.
So yeah. Anyone ever get evacuated due to fire threat before? How obvious does it seem it's gonna happen?

Some friends of mine are staying in a hotel right now due to evacuations. It doesn't look like their home will be caught in the path, but 30-40 homes are ash in their neighborhood.
the danger is wind shift. A fire can seem not too threatening but if the wind swings around or picks up then suddenly you've got almost no time to get out.
Best thing to do is pay attention to whatever official structures are in place for monitoring fire danger and if they start recommending that people leave then get the fuck out asap.
You can stay and try to fight it or save your property, but I'm not going to recommend that on a public board because you need to know what you're doing and it's hella dangerous.

That's the thing. I'm a few miles out from the city limits in rural hell. There's a fire station about 3 minutes down the road from me (a straight shot; if they come this way, they literally come up on my house first). We're too far out from the 'city' to hear the warning sirens (I dunno if those get used for fires), and the police force of Tyler, TX has a stick up their ass about us rural people calling them for anything. "YOU HAVE TO CALL COUNTY POLICE LEAVE US ALONE."

but there should be information on the news services and internet, surely?
I don't know how america deals with these things but back home you can monitor the situation online basically the whole time, and radio and television keep you updated really frequently.

I tried looking up online what sort of evacs are going on and it took me a long time to find something that's like, in-your-face "GET THE FUCK OUT" messaging. All I found was "dense smoke warnings." Like no shit.
Radio on though, yeah.

My apartment is next to UT, so half of Austin would have to burn to reach me.

good thing rick perry cut fire department funding by 75 percent this year
Is that true to some extent? (That funding was cut, not the amount)

Obama, knowing this, decided to exploit his major weakness early by sending FEMA to set the wildfires.

I looked it up a little bit ago and I'm really disappointed and dumbfounded. And then he has the nerve to ask for FEMA's help. I mean, we do need FEMA's help, but even he has to realize he's not looking so hot right now.

But seriously, fires can turn very quickly and travel at ridiculous speed so keep a good eye out for any warnings and then bolt asap.

Hi5
I am too close to the city (which is mostly fire resistant) to be affected, but some further out towns were destroyed.
It's kind of weird that a town I have been to just isn't there anymore.
nonsense, it's just a simple cleansing fire

Request that the President grant a disaster declaration so money from the federal Government can be brought in to fight this stuff
