The Battlefield 3 beta is out you guys, holy shit! I am super excited about this game, and hopefully I'll get to play the beta tonight, if origin will download the damn thing.

What is Battlefield?

Battlefield, if you don't know, is a large scale multiplayer FPS series of games that attempts to incorporate all aspects of symmetrical warfare into the matches. The maps can support up to 64 players!!! Besides the large scale of the maps, one of the more interesting aspects of Battlefield is the layered approach that players can take. If you want to be a pilot, and only focus on that during the fight, you can. If you want to be a tank commander, you can do that too. Want to be a fast response light armored guy? Yes, you can do that.

Maybe you want to be John Fucking Rambo, a one man assault guy armed to the teeth. Yup, you can do that. Anti-tank infantry? Yes. Medic? Yes. Support gunner? Yes.

*Sigh*, you can even be a sniper, if you must.

Fact is, Battlefield incorporates all of these different layers into one online match, rather than something like, for instance, Call of Duty, which is simply small infantry with different guns.

Squad Mechanics

Even more interesting in Battlefield is the squad mechanics. Basically, the team consists of several small squads, which have voip communication capabilities with each other. This means that large teams can coordinate more easily. Squads can also spawn off of their Squad Leader, which means inserting your SL into strategic points can be crucial to winning matches and taking capture points. It also means that playing with your buds is easily facilitated within the large game structure.


So what's new in Battlefield 3?


First, Battlefield 3 is using a new engine, that is, frankly, fucking gorgeous.

But whatever, you're not here to play a single player campaign, Battlefield 3 is about the multiplexer, dude!

Here is a small blurb from wikipedia that describes how the infantry roles have changed for this game

Battlefield 3's multiplayer matches see players take on one of four roles: Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon. The Assault class will be able to equip defibrillators and medkits, as was the case in Battlefield 2142. The mechanics of the light machine gun (LMG) have been changed to utilize the new engine: bipods can be deployed anywhere when in the prone position or near suitable scenery, and provide a significant boost to accuracy and recoil reduction. Suppressive fire from such weapons blurs the vision and reduces the accuracy of those under fire. The Engineer class will receive a flashlight that can be used to blind other players.[17][18] The Recon class will be able to put a radio beacon anywhere on the map and all squad members will be able to spawn on the location of the beacon.[19]

Several game modes have been announced, including Conquest, Rush, Squad Deathmatch, Squad Rush and for the first time in the Battlefield series Team/Squad Deathmatch.[20]

One thing that we know is that the immensely popular maps Karkand and Wake Island are back! Hooray!

I can't run this in fullscreen without my video card going kaput. running in a little window is alright except that it means I constantly get gunned down by hidden dudes I could never see and there are a lot of hidden dudes

still, I like all the first person animations for vaulting and moving prone and stuff. just need a better rig

also blinding people/getting blinded by flashlights in dark places is pretty funny. especially when its mostly from your own team

The Open Beta goes live tomorrow (thurs, Sept 29) and stays open for a couple weeks, I believe. Mid-October, or something like that? It's available on PS3, 360, and PC. I don't know what you have to do to get it on the consoles, but I believe you need an Origin account for the PC version.

I am going to play the shit out of this game. I plan on playing the OB on each platform to see what the differences are. Probably gonna get it for PS3 though.

It works well for me so far
There was some trouble yesterday with errors when trying to join a server, but it only lasted like an hour

8800GTS, not sure what the exact resolution is in windowed since it says 1920x1080 but with windowed checked off

watching the stream, looks like theres a neat nightvision scope for guns. looks like some sort of actual low light vision instead of the terrible green overlay from black ops

I have a GTX460 and 4gigs of sweet ram laying around, but I forgot I'd need a new motherboard then coincidentally a new processor to use them with and then I'd also have to get a new copy of windows and goddamnit computers

got some more BF3 in, running around as a recon with the semi-auto sniper with ironsights, laser sight and foregrip. pretty beastly. wish recon still had c4 but instead that goes to the support now, as well as mortars.. and claymores. the recon toys better be pretty sweet

they get a laser targeting system thats used for calling in airstrikes and stuff, forget what its called. also a radar beacon as well as a squad deploy beacon thats very, very useful when placed right. they also get a hovering recon vehicle, no idea if its armed or whatever.

engineers don't get much besides mines but also a little tracked robot that can plant/defuse m-com stations
