A new series should also feature the Gorn.

Doesn't The Next Generation essentially open with Q putting the whole of humanity on trial? To prove that the Federation really is as beautiful and wonderful as it claims to be? Doesn't much of the rest of the show more or less follow that premise?

I would contend that Deep Space Nine does much the same thing. Instead of being judged by what is essentially God, the Federation is set against its dark counterpart the Dominion, the anti-Federation if you will. And in this situation, too, the Federation must prove it can live up to its principles.

No, the only real difference between TNG and DS9 is that DS9 takes the view that humanity may not be perfect, but they'll never stop working on it, whereas TNG claimed that humanity (or at least Captain Picard) was already quite perfect enough and fully justified in preaching to the lesser races.

So, no, I don't agree Deep Space Nine isn't really Star Trek.

Yeah but the Federation works perfectly in TNG. Q puts them on trial and finds them innocent! Because in TNG, they stick to their principles no matter what. But in DS9, they are forced to really carefully examine those principles and at times, break them.

At the same time though, DS9 is where are lot of the questions about how the setting works come up, because the repercussions of having replicators and so on isn't really explained very well.

DS9 has the best intro music though, no doubt about that.

it's pretty interesting how this is reflected in the pilot, with sisko's relationship with picard

sisko mentions wolf 359 and picard just clams up and moves on to the next item on the agenda

it's a real side of picard that we don't see that often - the man who has a past that he has not come to terms with and may never

I was somewhat underwhelmed by the DS9 pilot but I'm interested to see where this series goes from here.

    How so?

I just watched Nagus myself, Quark episodes are always a delight.

What I don't understand is why they closed down Star Trek: The Experience right before the movie came out.

    That place was awesome :(

oh, the acting is awkward as hell and so is the staging

but then season one of TNG has code of honor, so

this series has a lot of wiggle room

Ah, I'm partway through season 1 and things have improved in my books, I just chalked it up to early season jitters as people get used to their characters. I'm clearly oblivious to the staging stuff, but I'd probably prefer it that way if I haven't noticed anything

But yeah, there are some interesting relationships going on so far, and the trial episode early on was definitely food for though (and had an awesome judge).

The acting improves by a wide margin as people get more comfortable with their characters, although some will always be super hammy (Sisko) or bad (Kira)

The staging, for my money, gets way better too

And there is a two parter in season three that will blow your mind

I can see said beard on the dvd box, it's probably gonna be like BJ from MASH where it takes a while for me to get used to the facial hair.

Riker without a beard just isn't the same, though.

Orik, as a warning, you have a lot more shit to wade through. But, just like TNG, suffering through the early season crap is easily worth the enjoyment that comes down the line.

DS9 hits on a truly excellent episode earlier than TNG does though, namely:

It's funny watching this show after so long. I love DS9 the most out of all the Trek shows....but damn the actor playing Sisko didn't do himself any favors that first season.

His expression after he decks Q is all sorts of hilariously bad.

I heard on the internet that Avery Brooks was sort of forced into playing that way. Apparently, the role he played shortly before DS9 was also that of an intense bald man with... whatever that type of beard is called... and the Powers That Be didn't want to confuse the viewers or remind them too much of Avery's last role or something stupid like that.

Patrick Stewart loves Picard, too. He's not one of the Trek veterans who looks down on it. God I heart that man.

I was somewhat underwhelmed by the DS9 pilot but I'm interested to see where this series goes from here.
DS9 really takes off when the Dominion makes their entrance.

Yeah, Patrick Stewart loves him some Star Trek.

He is incredibly nice too. I met him at the Chicago Comic Con, and he was great. A little hung over according to Levar Burton, but great. We talked about A Christmas Carol for a short while.

Before our photo op, I actually ran into him in the restroom. Manners prevailed though, and I didn't say anything to him. No talking at the urinal even if it's Patrick Stewart peeing next to you.
