I'm hoping that gains traction because that certainly slow down, if not kill, republican efforts to enact voter suppression. If nothing else that will get more minority voters on board with the idea of not voting GOP since they seem rather undemocratic and unamerican these days.

Pointing out that the republicans are using identity politics (antagonizing minority votes, shoring up white votes with scary voter fraud) is nothing but divisive identity politics!

Apparently the Republicans are proposing a voter ID bill in California. I haven't paid any attention to it since I've basically been out of town forforforforf for the last week.

If we can get either a vetoproof legislature in (if Romney wins) or a filibuster-proof legislature (if Obama wins), the first order of business should be the outlawing of voter ID programs, unless they are free and MAILED to registered voters.

I think he means the ID's are free and mailed to the voters. You're a legit voter? Here's your ID. Don't have an address? Drop by the DMV/Voter registration office/local courthouse to pick it up.

Florida’s former Republican Party chairman Jim Greer, who, scorned by his party and in deep legal trouble, blew the lid off what he claims was a systemic effort to suppress the black vote. In a 630-page deposition recorded over two days in late May, Greer, who is on trial for corruption charges, unloaded a litany of charges against the “whack-a-do, right-wing crazies” in his party, including the effort to suppress the black vote.

In the deposition, released to the press yesterday, Greer mentioned a December 2009 meeting with party officials. “I was upset because the political consultants and staff were talking about voter suppression and keeping blacks from voting,” he said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. He also said party officials discussed how “minority outreach programs were not fit for the Republican Party,” according to the AP.

    Wow. Stay classy, Florida Republicans.

While I'm happy my absentee re-register in Orange County was completed without a hitch, I hope this leads to more charges. Not necessarily in my county.

No, I mean that there should not be any cost whatsoever to voters, all costs absorbed by the gov't. Do you live in a rural voting area? Come to your polling station and pick up your voter ID before you vote! Already a registered voter with a valid address? Hey, it arrives by mail! Free. No extra tax from government, no cuts from public welfare systems. Maybe the legislature won't be able to vote themselves a payraise for one year, but hey, that's the price you gotta pay to be a public servant.

Getting my out-of-state license converted in DC was ridiculous. I had to have four pieces of information:
    Proof of identity
    Proof of SSN
    Proof of Current Residency
    Proof of ability to drive

They all had to be separate documents. So I needed my passport (or birth cert), SSN card, a bill/lease with my address (but NOT a cell phone bill), and my driver's license. Based on this process I assume there are tons of poorer people in DC driving around without a license. Getting a replacement is easy though, all you need is you driver's license number, SSN, DOB, and you can do it online.

how you gonna get the pictures?

Previous ID pictures, or a van that goes out to registered voters.

Essentially, what I'm getting at is that it's a shitty idea, and the amount of trouble it would cost to the state to make it constitutional is ridiculous and not worth the effort for what basically amounts to there not being a problem.

So, I'm all for these voter ID laws being unconstitutional unless an extremely crazy and overly expensive set of guarantees is made to ensure nobody, not one single voter, is left out.

Yeah, I've always figured the best way to fuck the GOP on the efforts would be to say "fine you can do voter ID with a photo; however, you can only do it if you provide a free one to every voter in your state, make sure that every voter can easily gain access to the facilities that do the IDs (so provide transportation) and replace any lost or stolen IDs for free. Failing to do those three things means that you can't have photo IDs as a requirement for voting and their will be no fucking waivers." I'd imagine the GOP would bitch up a storm about how the costs are so unfair but no one will give them any sympathy because it's fairly easy to argue that the state shouldn't be allowed to deny people the right to vote just so they can save money.

Fits here fine, I think, seeing as it was quickly becoming an actual way to remove elected officials and not just manage municipal debt. The next two cities being targeted weren't in immediate danger - ass over head over another ass in debt but not behind on payments and safe at least until the end of this year.

So, despite Snyder vetoing it and the courts blocking it, it happened anyway: Michigan voters had to affirm their citizenship to vote. Only by checkbox and not oath, but still, wasn't supposed to happen. Officially it wasn't supposed to be enforced, but poll workers were still told to enforce it. New instructions were issued around noon, but my personal experience (Saginaw Township precinct 3) they were still using it to stop people from voting at 6:30 PM.

Also, since the last post in the thread was about the state's emergency manager bill, the matter is on the ballot and the law is supposed to be suspended pending the election in November. Snyder found a clever loophole and signed an older repealed version of it back into law and put the managers back in the cities they'd already taken over. It halts plans for a few pending takeovers of non-failing cities, but leaves Flint and other cities in the same spot they were trying to get out of.

    http://www.freep.com/article/20120806/NEWS15/120806071/Previous-Michigan-emergency-manager-law-will-go-back-into-effect-attorney-general-rules

Interestingly, there was also a good bit of outright vote fraud in the state this cycle. When Thaddeus McCotter couldn't get enough signatures to be on the ballot for reelection, his volunteers just start filling in names. Another Republican, afraid he would get primaried out by a teapartier, filled out absentee ballots on behalf of seniors living in nursing homes. And of course there's always some level of zombie voting in the absentee system. None of which any of the "election integrity" laws Snyder vetoed would have done anything to stop.

Mother. Fucker. It's time to put these fuckers up against the wall.

I don't think the Republicans would have a problem with White Walkers voting.

Now, men who've taken the Black, on the other hand. How are we to know they didn't vote, then pledge themselves to the Night's Watch, and then vote again?

Most of those that have taken the black are convicted felons anyway.

But their crimes are forgiven when they take the black. Although I guess a condition of the pardon is that they dont engage in politics.

Hey guys I found more voter fraud!
The district attorney in Hampden County is investigating whether a Republican candidate for state representative orchestrated an illegal scheme to cast absentee ballots on behalf of hundreds of voters in hope of winning a primary election.

State election officials were tipped off to the potential voter fraud when a suspiciously large number of residents of the Springfield suburb of East Longmeadow suddenly changed party registration from Democrat to independent, making them eligible to vote in the upcoming Republican primary.

When contacted, several of the voters said they had not changed party affiliations, raising concern that someone had switched their party in an attempt to cast fraudulent absentee ballots on their behalf.

oh just kidding, it's not fraud since it's a white republican

    move along!
