[Trailers] Solidifying Iron-Clad Opinions in 2:30 or Less
In a world where marketing is everything . . . in a time where getting advance word out is key . . . in a place where OMFG DID U SEE THE AVENGERS SHIT WOOOOOOOOOO
Ahem. Right, sorry. Trailers can move you off the fence from "meh" to "please take the cash from my wallet now" or to "I can't believe I ever considered seeing this pile of garbage". They can include music not in the movie, lines adjusted to remove swearing or to alter the perception of a scene, or - in some cases - entire sequences that you'll never see in the film (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, for example). They can even give you the idea that the film is a comedy or action film or romance when the end result is anything but. And in others, they will basically hand you the plot from start to finish - including twists, cameo appearances, and anything else that might get your ass into a seat on opening weekend.
But I still love the little bastards when they are done right. Case in point:
Bring them forth, my friends.

I'm betting cold hard cash the villain is Raspy Voice Detective Guy.
I just had this conversation with a friend and he was all 'No way they'll make it that obvious!". To me, their already being semi-obvious with the success of the "Sherlock" movies, it seems to me, their trying to get on that money train.
That Social Network trailer is really good, holy moly
Now we say that, yet at the time everyone was morally against the concept of a facebook movie. That's honestly the first time I've seen the trailer because pre-release it was "lol facebook movie." It is a good one though. I should quit listening to my friends.

I must have watched the Social Network trailer a couple dozen times, it's so amazing. That and A Serious Man, Tree of Life, and Where The Wild Things Are
Oh goodie, I love trailers. Game trailers, movie trailers, even upcoming fight trailers. There's a fine art to fitting in as much awesome as you can in 2 minutes without actually giving away too much.
Spoiler:
Dr. Strangelove's famous trailer
Trailer for The Raid, very redband
Schindler's list trailer, with almost no spoken dialogue at all
The 1979 trailer for Alien
And how 'bout a couple of game trailers?
Spoiler:

So, The Avengers looks cool and all, but... I can't help but feel like "too much awesome in one place." I suppose I'd really rather just have another Iron Man movie.
At least based on the trailer, that seems to be what it is.
Which isn't really surprising, since RDJ is really the most compelling actor playing the most compelling character.

sam jackson is the most compelling actor in this movie
i'm glad we're finally done with the short nick fury cameos and now we get to see the full extent of his character kicking all sorts of ass
hydra has planes....
and they're kinda like snakes....
I'd love to see The Raid as a polemic against No Knock raids in the US.
I think it's a polemic against cops that don't stab people in the chest.
Honestly the movie itself might be just too brutal and ugly for me to really enjoy (Although it does have good early reviews!), but at a 2 minute dose it's pretty dang fun.
They put out a trailer for the prequel to Bakemonogatari. You don't need to be able to understand it to enjoy it.
(And btw, what exactly IS the policy on anime discussions on this board? There's a sticky that says none, but sometimes I still see a thread about a particular show, and I'm never quite sure what's allowed or not. And then the general chatter board has THEIR no anime sticky saying to only have anime discussions on D&D. I assume it's because of flamewars or something at some point before I ever got here.)

The policy is no thread about anime in general, but they allow threads about specific animes and anime discussion in threads where it is relevant to the discussion.
I'm actually pretty excited for In Time. There's plenty of chance for it to be dumb obviously but cast seems not-terrible. Timberlake can act at least enough for this role. And the premise is interesting in a pop-philosophical way, which I'm a sucker for.
It looks like it might have a fairly formulaic eat-the-rich kind of plot, but I'm hopeful.

It seems sorta similar to Gattica, where you're basically taking an idea-filled sci-fi short story and stretching it out into a saggy two hours. Although everyone being the same age like that was a nice touch.

This might be my most hyped movie for 2012. I love the book so much I have a physical and kindle copy of it and read it twice, on each version.
This cosmic dance bursting decadence and withheld permissions twists all our arms collectively, but if sweetness can win- and it can, then I'll still be here tomorrow to high five you yesterday, my friends. Peace Trueachievements Profile | Gamertag: EyeRChris
Cinematography and acting aside from Giamatti looks awful.
Like there is absolutely nothing interesting looking going on in the visual style, and that's pretty fucking important for an adaptation of that book.
Not only 'nothing interesting' it looks like they literally used the exact same lighting setup for about half the shots. And it's ugly. Which, hey, Fight Club is ugly, but for a purpose. This just looks like dingy diner. I don't expect the main guy to be an Oscar winner, but I don't think he even passed the Turing test in the trailer. Paul Giamatti's actual acting just makes the lack everywhere else that much more noticeable. And what's up with the aspect ratio? Even indy movies filmed on a digital Canon handheld can do a proper widescreen.
SyFy original movies have had more promise than this... Sorry to pile onto it for fans of the book (I haven't read it), but... yeah. Ouch.
I'm suing Marvel, Disney and Joss Whedon. I gained 30 pounds and had a minor heart attack from the excessive amount of cheese in the recent Avengers trailer.
Anyone else on board? Let's make this a class action affair.
My low point came while I was crushing man's skull like sparrow's egg between my thighs. But then I thought to myself, "who else would crush man's skull like sparrow's egg between his thighs?"

I 2 minutes and 31 seconds, it basically turned everyone who was "lol facebook movie? that's fucking stupid" into "holy shitballs, that looks good".
Meh, it's better than Michael Jackson. Jackson lobbied for that role for about 10 years. He was weirdly obsessed with it.

This is supposed to be extremely brutal and fucked up.
I've heard it compares to Blindness, but is more realistic.

In Time... odd concept, directed by the guy who did Gattaca, so I'll certainly give it a chance.

'Get your fucking finger on the wookie'
I got a costume, set and vehicle boner.
I love that trailer so very very much. Funny thing, it includes something the OP mentions; lines that don't exist in the game itself.
It's not quite at the same level, but I'm really loving the ME3 Gameplay trailer as well.
And worthy of mention; Two Steps From Hell, a group who makes music specifically for trailers (though they may have branched out).
Freedom Fighters (As Heard In: the Star Trek (2011) trailer)
Heart of Courage (AHI: Avatar's trailer, ME2's Launch trailer, others)
Topical: The Avengers trailer makes my boxers tight on a lot of levels. Yes I needed to share that. You're welcome.
So is that Strangelove trailer.
Hardy and Pine seem to be having a ball.
