[RECOMMEND ON] Affordable gaming mouse

ArchArch Trust me, I'm a scientistRegistered User regular
Sup guys! I am in the market for a relatively cheap multi-button, wired gaming mouse.

I don't want to spend more than like 40 dollars, unless it is absolutely necessary.

What are some pretty good brands or models that will last for a good while?

If this is better served in the tech sub-forum, feel free to move it

Hmm. Newegg doesn't appear to sell my mouse of choice, the G5. But it is a few years old at this point..

I know your price range is maxed at 40, but I cannot stress how much a good quality mouse can help things. I have exclusively been using mice in the M500/G5 line for over half a decade now. This is the closest I can find to my mice of choice:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104318

Again, a little pricey, but it features the most important things in a gaming mouse: Laser optics, at least 2 thumb toggles, full tilt scroll wheel. The DPI adjustment features also get really nice.

Oh, and looking over the specs this one DOES have the adjustable weights that the G5 offers. Hmmm.. Now I'm starting to consider getting one!

One word of warning, though: The M500/G500 mouse design hasn't changed in its form factor in a while. It is a BIG, ergonomic mouse. i would highly recommend getting into a store and seeing if you like it hands-on.

Not sure how many buttons you're looking for, but I bought a Death Adder earlier this year and I love it. It's precise, comfortable to hold, and affordable. Also it looks pretty badass :P

Arch, if you're planning on playing CoX for awhile save up and get a Razer Naga - there's an additional powers tray built into the game for its side buttons and stuff.

Razer makes quality mice. Anything on their catalog works well. My current Razer mouse has been the most durable corded optical mouse I've ever owned, and I usually go through a mouse about once a year (even the typical high quality ones like Logitech and Microsoft).

I totally agree about Logitech's G5 or whatever their next version of it is if you want something with more than just a scroll wheel and good sensitivity, but don't need/want too many extra buttons (two on the side, and technically the +/- sensitivity buttons can be bound to other stuff, but that's super-inconvenient). My fiance (who is a huuuge PC gamer) and I each have one, and love 'em. It's not big, it's comfy, and it's got great sensitivity. I don't make any use of them, but they did originally come with extra weights in case you want a heavier mouse. Razer's a good brand, too, but I remember a year or so ago people were having trouble with assigning and using Shift + Razer buttons in-game (I don't remember what the exact details were, but a quick googling shows that this is still an issue in at least WoW as of a couple months ago) or something to that effect. Looks like it might be related to specific button configurations people have if I read things right, and it'll probably get fixed sometime in the near future, but just thought I'd mention it. Guess that's what happens when your mouse is TOO awesome. =P Anyway, I don't know how Razer prices their stuff, either (haven't personally bought one), but I know for sure Logitech has stuff in your price range (and if you want the G5, it was really popular, so I'd bet you could find it somewhere other than Newegg).

i have a g500 which may be a little bit more than what you were looking to spend ($50is), but they do offer a cheaper version in the g400 under $40.

i like the G500, lots of buttons and comfortable.

I really liked my Razer Copperhead but one of the switches for the left mouse button developed a noticable dent in less than half a year which lead to every other mouse click becoming double clicks, which got really annoying.
I was able to fix this problem, which appears to be a pretty common problem with Razer mice, by opening the mouse and putting a drop of superglue on that part of the switch, to fill the dent the button had created by constantly pushing onto the same space, but after a while the problem reappeared(I did not want to send it in as I live in Germany and did not want the extra hassle of shipping overseas).

Long story short, I got a used Logitech G5 from a friend and imho it is the superior mouse that has lasted a lot longer so far.

Just wanted to say that I am no longer a fan of Logitech. My current Logitech mouse was great for 6 months or so but then the teflon-like coating on it started to degrade. Now the mouse looks all scabby and gross and filament-thin bits of plasticy stuff rub off when you use it.

edit: the actual optics and buttons are of course great. But I would not buy another logitech after what happened with this one after several months of real-world use.

What you think "makes sense" has nothing to do with reality. It just has to do with your life experience. And your life experience may only be a small smidgen of reality. Possibly even a distorted account of reality at that. So what this means is that, beginning in the 20th century as our means of decoding nature became more and more powerful, we started realizing our common sense is no longer a tool to pass judgment on whether or not a scientific theory is correct. - Neil Degrasse Tyson

I use this mouse and I'm pretty happy. The two negative reviews address issues I've never had (it works flawlessly for me every time), and it's a good bit below comp prices. Weighted and up to 5k DPI makes a huge difference.
