so would it be fair to say that most people think of writing about games as instrumental, eg. they use writing about games as an indicator as to whether or not they would buy a game exclusively, and are not interested in writing about games as something to read for its own merit

For me, it depends on the game. I don't care at all about articles on, say, League of Legends. But I could read about WoW stuff and enjoy it.

Additionally, I think I enjoy reading WoW stuff because the game actually changes. I would eventually get bored reading about games that have been out for a while and nothing new is going on.

Can you talk more about Madden?

We'll try to talk about all kinds of games, but the truth is we don't play Madden, or many other sports games. We also don't like games in which the best feature is bouncing breasts and shapely buttocks, not because we respect women necessarily— even though we sort of do— but because we've found that real porn is far more efficient. Our gaming urge is just in a different part of our brains.

maybe if it was something about the history of a game/franchise I dug, I would read it.

but talking about a thing that is there to entertain primarily just isn't a thing I would enjoy even remotely.

i'd rather just play the dang game.

A bit of both. I mostly read reviews and the like just to see what the community at large thinks about a games pros and cons and such. I can't remember the last time a review actually influenced my purchasing decisions. There are also some reviewers that I like to follow occasionally as well.

you can quantify what is not fun however, in games.

For example, a game that controls like a three wheeled shopping cart on a gravel road. Unless there is something really distracted to that point, isn't a person in the world going to enjoy that.

I have and do read articles that are interesting takes or deconstructions of games that I've played, or at least, games that I'm interested in.

I think the author would have to be an interesting, unique and entertaining voice for me to really start paying attention on a regular basis though, without being there solely for my interest in the specific topic.

but see, those are all games where you have a solid point to cancel that. There are games with no redeeming factor to them. And even then there is more of a niche to it. I enjoyed Land of the dead: Road to Fiddler's green, but it was a balls awful game.

The shotgun was unusable. A shotgun, in a zombie game, unusable. It should have been a crime. Still had fun with it, but it is a niche title to be sure. I would never recommend it to someone without a large follow up behind why. just like i can't recommend Deadly Premonition to everyone. I couldn't play it. Ask Orikae, after an hour i refused to play any more of it, i just couldn't handle the controls anymore.

I was reading a Howard Zinn book and he talked about historical/journalistic bias for a bit

essentially, he said that it's impossible to avoid because simply by choosing what facts to report, you are also choosing which facts not to report

    that made sense to me

and so, I am completely okay with bias as long as

    1) your bias is a position you arrived at after a lot of thought and reason

    2) you acknowledge your bias

    3) you look for, and acknowledge, things that contradict your bias

all that said I generally avoid Jezebel because fuck gawker

my favorite is the last-minute endorsement

for an example, watch his Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood review

spends the whole video bitching about it then at the end goes "but what the hell, I had fun with it"

but really, my only complaint about Yahtzee is that he calls himself a reviewer when clearly he's more of a columnist or editorializer.
