We've all had this conversation before haven't we?

    it's why i threw down a caution

    we've gone down that road

it ends only in Arch crying

I mean like literally this conversation.

Abdhy was saying something about genetic engineering.

I said something about how it's less dangerous than it seems.

Then I quoted Craig Venter and Daxon commented on it.

I think this is a thing that happened.

That makes far more sense. Although, as I previously stated, ecosystems are ultracomplex and we have demonstrated repeatedly that we do not yet have the ability to selectively make alterations to ecosystems and have them not wind up being net negatives due to the law of unintended consequences kicking us in the nuts repeatedly.

Maybe we will be there in a century or two. Maybe things will be so bad in a couple hundred years that we'll have no choice but to attempt it regardless.

    ugh. just ugh.

someone on NPR talking about some fucking hippie who is working on unifying quantum mechanics and relativity on his own. After dropping out of college because they "wanted him to take classes like pre-calculus". And he "tests his theories" by making giant smoke rings in the back of his trailer park.

    Quantum smoke rings.

Also, Sarksus the night is still young.

And I have a lab report to do.

rebuild the ecosphere from the ground up with genetically engineered lifeforms

We would more than likely die in any attempt to do this, and if there was a hell, we would go there.

A couple hundred years down the line this will not be nearly as awful a prospect as it seems now.

Eradicating the biosphere? Or going to hell? IMO the first is roughly the same as the second, but YMMV.

I'm not morally opposed to genetic manipulation of flora and fauna (or humans, for that matter). Just the idea of torching everything and trying to rebuild with genetically altered everything is a hilariously awful plan.

We've seen what happens when we engage in minor tampering with an ecosystem, nothing good. The idea that we can build one from the ground up, and that it would be somehow superior to the ecology of the planet which we have evolved to survive in from the first single-celled organism until now, is such a stupid science fiction bullshit notion that I can't take it seriously.

And that's not even touching the moral and ethical issues that would arise from the mere suggestion of doing this. I'd be the first person to strap on a bomb vest and walk into a government building if this were an actual thing that humanity was going to attempt.

Actually we don't even need to go in the hilarious folly of trying to design better ecosystems or the moral and ethical issues

    and nevermind surviving the process!

it's the sheer impossibility of actually torching everything that trips the plan up right away

I mean, how would one even do that

like, if you've read about how mindbogglingly massibe extinction events can be and how 99% extinction is like, barely a dent

you gotta realize how much effort it would take and how damn hardy life is

Off the top of my head, Just Cause 2 and Arkham Asylum were awesome with a 360 pad.

It really, really pisses me off when people confuse the simplified analogies used to convey the general idea of scientific theory (which are useful, and nothing wrong with them) with the theory itself.

EG: people forget that the "picture" they have in their heads is at best an imperfect generalization of the actual math. And that without the actual math they can't actually contribute to the discourse of science.

What you think "makes sense" has nothing to do with reality. It just has to do with your life experience. And your life experience may only be a small smidgen of reality. Possibly even a distorted account of reality at that. So what this means is that, beginning in the 20th century as our means of decoding nature became more and more powerful, we started realizing our common sense is no longer a tool to pass judgment on whether or not a scientific theory is correct. - Neil Degrasse Tyson
