The boss battle is the same in this no matter what.
Warrior Within is the only one with different endings.

The following sentence is true. The previous sentence was false.

Well, after almost a month of wrestling with the initial movie and its refusal to love FRAPS or being rendered, I have finally fiddled enough that it is visible, and so we begin The Warrior Within. Complete with Smoke Monster, mysterious time-travelling island and John Locke... no, wait, scratch that last one.

Another set of getting used to the new sparkly combat. Also, swan diving into the abyss.

You can do the lunge by just pressing attack while moving towards the wall (you don't need to jump).
You can do a similar attack with the secondary weapon, which is probably better if you're facing a group (the secondary moves seem to hit a wider area).

The following sentence is true. The previous sentence was false.

Also, try running up a wall and pressing either attack button.
I'll watch these as soon as I'm back home and my girlfriend doesn't beg for attention.. :P

A: FPSs suck, all that ever happens is that I get shot!
B: Well, you DO have to shoot back...

Ladies everywhere. All of them want... me to hurt them? Wait...
    Spoiler:

Sorry the battle took so long, it didn't seem like there was any good way of dealing with her blocking. Strafing maybe?

No, you'll just have to wait it out. <Space><Left Click><Left Click> works against her pretty well, as well as rolling and attacking. Otherwise, the sword clinches do a lot of damage, but I think those are random. And I get the impression that those mini-boss encounters are much easier the second time you try them; they tend to attack less often I think. That first fight against Shahdee (the woman in black) can be a particular pain in the backside because she has an attack where she kicks you in the face, and you get launched across half the room. Usually right into a bottomless pit. When you're out of rewinds.
Honestly, I'd have expected you to miss that first life upgrade; I didn't discover it until the third time through the game, I think.

One more thing: the secondary weapon icon flashing red inicates that it will disintegrate upon the next (successful?) hit. Different weapons last a different amount of time, deal different amounts of damage, and attack speed varies as well. You can have a look at the weapons you've found so far in the pause menu (as well as a combo list) which will tell you how useful each one is. General rule of thumb, slower weapons deal more damage and break quicker.
From strongest to weakest, the weapon types are as follows:
    Maces > Axes > Swords > Daggers.
Throwing daggers (as opposed to throwing swords etc) deals extra damage IIRC.

So the basic mooks it looks like jumping over their head and tossing them, or using steal weapon is the most efficient way of finishing them off.
The ranged ghoul things that fire their spikes at me get immediately killed by a thrown weapon.
Kinky assassin ladies it seems like wall abilities are the best option, since they seem to block most other things.

  • klemmingklemming Registered User regular
    Pretty much.
I think you can throw the assassin chicks as well.
Are you going for the good/bad ending? (basically, do you want to be told when you've missed a health upgrade?)
Good ending/full health is good, but the last boss is a lot harder.

    Really? I always thought

I'll definitely be trying to grab the good ending, not least because it'll make more sense when following through into the start of TTT, but also because I remember the different endings from when a friend played it, and the bad ending was really sad.

It's going to be such a long wait to get fibre-optic all the way out here in the boonies. 8(

Also, got lost at the end of this set. Not sure if I'm being dumb or if WW is just not so good at telling you where to go.

  • valgomirvalgomir Registered User regular
Getting lost is pretty common in this game, mainly because you can revisit almost every part of the castle at any time, andbecause the map is absolutely useless.

A: FPSs suck, all that ever happens is that I get shot!
B: Well, you DO have to shoot back...
  • BethrynBethryn Registered User regular
Yeah, PoP2008 allowed revisiting, but had a rather better map to go with it (as well as much more delineated areas). I've got a rough idea of the layout of this thing in my head, but there's no easy way of remembering particular rooms.

At least the objective tells me whether I'm heading for the past or present.

"SO, everything should be wrecked now... Waaaait a second. That's not... They've renovated, god damn them!"

On the matter of sword-drawing, check out this guy, he has a video on drawing it from the back, from the opposite hip, and about the sound effects usually used in movies when someone draws / sheathes a bladed weapon. Oh, and a shitton of videos about other historical weaponry, and about swing dancing.

You are heading the right way; the hourglass is found in the throne room, which is through the big gigantic doors in the big gigantic room that led you to the boss fight against Shahdee.
At the start of the next set you'll have a chance to get a life upgrade (which you can still get later, but since you have the opportunity then...):
    Spoiler:

Slightly OT: The POP games are actually the only games where I prefer the German dub to the English dub. The guy who voices the prince, David Nathan, also does (almost) all the dubbing for Johnny Depp and Christian Bale (except in Pirates of the Caribbean 1 through 3, and in Public Enemies where he only voices Depp but not Bale). He has such a nice way of narrating things. Oh, and he also did a Call of C'thulhu audiobook, which is awesome.

Oh yeah, sorry about all the TL;DR comments, but I can't help but annotate lots and lots <_<

As a point of interest, during the Dahaka chases after he finishes his crazy speech noises, use Rewind (if you can spare the sand).
Turns out, he's threatening/taunting you backwards.

A little heads-up: when enemies are glowing yellow, that means that when you perform the "steal weapon" move (<secondary attack> + <drop/throw weapon/pick up weapon> or <jump> + <drop/throw weapon/pick up weapon>), you won't have to chocke that enemy for a long time (during which you are open to attacks from other mooks). The prince will instead immediately kill that enemy and steal his weapon. It ALSO means that the next power attack (anything more powerful than a simple sword swing) is going to kill them. That includes lunges, jumping over them and cutting them in half, and any other combo you can think of.

    Spoiler:

Accidentally found another health upgrade. And a wall I can't break yet. Also checked out the combo list and noticed I can counter-attack and counter-kick, which I might try out next set.

  • valgomirvalgomir Registered User regular
Oh wow, the unthinkable has happened: I don't have enough to add to this set to write ten bajillion paragraphs! :O

One thing I'd like to mention about the breakable wall: you will NEVER go back to that area unless you choose to do lots of pointless backtracking for either a secret weapon or some artwork (I can't remember which at the moment).
There is, however, at least one more location that features a breakable bit of obstacle, which leads to a life upgrade. You've already passed it, but won't be able to use it until much later (and again, it'll require a great deal of backtracking).

Nice set, as always. (Though Jim deserves a kick in the testicles...)

I might wander back offset and record the glorious opening of the breakable wall then, once I get a weapon that can cut stone!

    Spoiler:

Oh god I'm addicted to riposte. Also, just curious, I assume because of the backtracking you can get all life upgrades even if you miss one the first time through so long as you don't start the final fight?

And valgo, I haven't opened the spoiler, so I will definitely go back and record whatever treasure awaits me once I can break through stone.

  • valgomirvalgomir Registered User regular
New set, yaaay. Sadly I can't watch it right now as I am at my girlfriend's and she's not at all interested in video games (and not as fluent in the English language as I am) :/
Oooh, seeing the results of your backtracking will be interesting.

You mentioned how the balancing animation was pointless when you could just shimmy along beams, but there are two reasons why it is a good idea to have it.
    1) On long beams, you don't actually have to balance all the way. Instead, you can just jump forward a few times in order to progress faster.
    2) If someone (like the bats in SOT) decides that attacking the prince while he's not on the ground would be a swell idea, it is better to walk on the plank / beam / whatever, because: if you are shimmying and you get hit, you fall to your doom. If, however, you are balancing on the beam / plank / whatever, you only lose your balance and grab onto whatever you were balancing on top of.

If you encounter invisible ninja women again, remember where they died. They drop invisible weapons that are quite durable and powerful, IIRC.

There is ONE secret in one of the Dahaka chase sequences, and it's a secret weapon. I'll tell you when you get there, if you want to. It's quite easy to miss.
Also, remember that stone the Dahaka smashed near the end of this set? The model is still there, the stone hitbox isn't...

No longer got sniffles/coughs and back at my place, so back to updating!
    Spoiler:

Finally turned on the tap, also found a health upgrade, missed a couple of art boxes (one I think I can get now, other looks a bit more difficult to get to).

  • valgomirvalgomir Registered User regular
I shouted at my monitor so you wouldn't run past the lever that turned those water pillars, but you wouldn't listen :(
At least you found the health upgrade.

To get to the artwork you saw high above the garden (one level below you) you'll have to go down to that level and just wallrun on that side of the room.

Glad to see you back anyway :D

    Latest set:

Have I missed any life upgrades?

  • valgomirvalgomir Registered User regular
Nope, the mechanical tower is just pretty devoid of life upgrades.
Funny how you find all the upgrades on your own, but it took you several minutes to work out how to get down at the beginning of the video.

The point of having the big guy break the counterweights was to get the rest of the weight to get pulled up a bit. As long as they're not broken, they hang too low for you to reach any of the plateaus you have to jump to.

    Oh, that makes sense.

And yeah; I'm pretty good at exploring when I spot something that looks like a secret to me, but chimneying down that chasm really didn't look possible until I tried it!
