[Sandusky Sex Abuse] 60mil fine for Penn St, 4 year post season ban

Jerry Sandusky used to be a coach in the Penn State football program.

A recent scandal broke showing that several members of the program and university administration were aware of alleged sexual abuse of young boys by Sandusky and nothing was ever reported to police. Sandusky helped run a charity for at-risk young boys.

Sandusky has been indicted, with 8 victims so far, and the university president and long time head football coach, Joe Paterno, have been fired. Two others have been indicted for lying to the grand jury, Tim Curley, athletic director, and Gary Schultz, senior vp for finance and business.

Penn State students rioted at the news of JoePa being fired. Jon Stewart does not approve. http://www.newser.com/story/133116/video-jon-stewart-shames-penn-state-rioters-on-the-daily-show.html?utm_medium=fark&utm_campaign=pop

Grand jury indictment: http://www.crewof42.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Sandusky-indictment.pdf

Sandusky's bail was set by a judge who allegedly has ties to his charity. http://deadspin.com/5859075/judge-who-set-unsecured-bail-for-jerry-sandusky-is-a-second-mile-volunteer

Sandusky did a creepy national TV interview with Bob Costas. Part of it didn't air. http://pittsburgh.sbnation.com/penn-st-nittany-lions/2011/11/15/2564760/jerry-sandusky-interview-unaired-portion-raises-questions-about

Sandusky published an autobiography titled "Touched" in 2001.

Assistant coach McQueary is cited in the indictment as having directly seen Sandusky raping a boy in the locker room in 2002. He has since stated he actually stopped what was happening. He reported it to Paterno, who then reported up the chain of administration to Curley. Sandusky retired in 1999 but still had access to the facilities through the charity. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15750684

So here is a place to discuss this and the new stuff that comes out about this scandal, which is becoming worse by the day, really.

that TV interview is one of the craziest things I have ever heard.

His lawyer scheduled it for him.

Part of me hopes the lawyer did that on purpose.

Here is the part that didn't air:

    BOB COSTAS

19:00:28:00: "But isn't what you're just describing the classic MO of many pedophiles? And that is that they gain the trust of young people, they don't necessarily abuse every young person. There were hundreds, if not thousands of young boys you came into contact with, but there are allegations that at least eight of them were victimized. Many people believe there are more to come. So it's entirely possible that you could've helped young boy A in some way that was not objectionable while horribly taking advantage of young boy B, C, D, and E. Isn't that possible?"

    JERRY SANDUSKY:

19:01:01:00: "Well -- you might think that. I don't know. (LAUGHS) In terms of -- my relationship with so many, many young people. I would-- I would guess that there are many young people who would come forward. Many more young people who would come forward and say that my methods and-- and what I had done for them made a very positive impact on their life. And I didn't go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I've helped. There are many that I didn't have-- I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways."

Sandusky might try to sue his attorney for malpractice if the attorney did, in fact, schedule this interview/not intervene during the interview. There's a lot that would have to be proven in a malpractice suit, but yeah, the attorney could face civil liability if he had anything to do with the interview.

I feel like reality is punking me.

I mean, a guy who ran a charity for at risk youth, who wrote a book called "touched" is a pedophile who chooses a cradle robber for his attorney? Really?

So he's using the Herman Cain defense? That will work out well for him.

That Costas interview was just...strange. I don't know if Sandusky is totally oblivious or emotionally detached from his current situation and what he's done, or if he was medicated during the interview. He did not come across as a person that is feeling anything resembling remorse or guilt.

EDIT: Also, I nominate this photo for the OP.

    it's called 'psychopathy'.

"It doesn't matter what I did! These kids will vouch for me! THEY'LL VOUCH FOR ME, DAMMIT! I'm always allowed to get away with this shit when people cover-up my horrifying behavior for me because I'm a smooth-talker, so I don't see why it should be different this time!"

Yeah, 'Touched' the biography. What a sick motherfucker. Well, at least we now know that he's been an active predator since at least 2001, which makes the idea that he's only raped 8 victims pretty laughable.

Hahaha. You mean now that Paterno has been fired maybe the media will actually start talking about Sandusky? ESPN managed to talk about the scandal for 3 or 4 days without regularly mentioning anyone by name other than Paterno.

I think everybody knows that Sandusky is going down, the media doesn't need to condemn him for that to happen. Paterno is the celebrity going down in flames, of course he gets the media coverage.

When calling the attorney a cradle robber, that's going by the '1/2 Age + 7' rule, right? Because the age of consent in PA is 16.

  • RocketSauceRocketSauce Registered User regular
The really fucked up thing about his interview is he claims he was just showering with young boys, as if that was better. Any adult who isn't looking to exploit a child knows this is wrong and he is creating a situation where the possibility of exploitation could occur. I'm going to bet this is not even the worst of what will come out.

If you're damn near 50 and banging someone that's young enough that you'd have to get their parents' written permission to marry them, it's pretty safe to say you're a cradle robber. At a minimum, it's horribly unethical to bang a current/former client (of any age).

His lawyer scheduled the interview? A sane lawyer would threaten to quit if his client decided to do an interview like this.

I read a comment somewhere that this interview might turn out to be Sandusky's suicide note.

According to the article she worked for his law firm and they were "friends" before he represented her for emancipation. So there was a personal relationship before he represented her.

I'd go beyond that and say that if you find yourself in a situation where someone asking you that question is actually a realistic possibility, you shouldn't do the interview.

It's not unheard of for lawyers in high profile cases to try and influence the public's perception of their client. I guess if you make your client seem more sympathetic, you hope to have a better shot with the jury.

If that's what Sandusky and his lawyer were trying to do with this interview, I can't say that it was a success.
