I heard the wrong endings are stupid and bad in that game. That makes me sad. The first game had some legitimately chilling endings in it, and they all felt distinct. It was worth running through the game a few more times to collect them all and see how awful things could get.

Yeah, the bad ends got pretty involved in the first game and I liked "collecting" them myself. In Blood Drive all the bad ends are pretty much just a sentence or two saying, "You didn't run away. So now you are dead. WRONG END."

There's also no longer any little notes or tragic little stories about all the skellies/ghosts you find in the school. They're all just... there.

That's not true, some corpses still have those. And BD still has some chilling Wrong Ends, just not as many.

Did they? I don't recall any of them having one. Maybe I missed it somewhere, though I did collect their tags. It certainly wasn't memorable to me if I did run into one with any story attached to it though.

    EDIT-
Oh wait. Maybe those people from the society fan-service-evil-girl is a part of? I kinda hated the existence of that whole society, so I didn't care about their stuff that much. Not to mention they were all jerks anyways, so I doubly didn't care.

In a field where companies keep throwing their lot in with the ever shady, ever atrocious, and ever scapegoating VN localizers, I love that Debonosu is just striking the hell out on their own, no matter how unbelievably awful they are at it and how terrible an idea it is for them to keep using Japanese native translators.

Wow. Music sounds good, at least.

And it amazes me how many localization groups outsource their work nowadays, we have a few freelancers here, even. One of them worked on BlazBlue.

The game's writing is insipid to begin with, and the plot nonexistent, so it's not like there's much that's being lost in translation, but even it deserves at least a real translation instead of one that looks like it came from 1995.

Among other things. Haruka's an okay enough game if you're into... everything, although I really wouldn't suggest it for the gameplay alone, it's not great for replays, and you won't even see about two thirds of the 'content' playing normally.

In related news, SH Chara announced their next game by their main team, Planet Dragon. Their game titling is really a thing of beauty.

There's also a demo of Kindred Spirits(On The Roof) if you like some yuri in your VN. It's certainly cute, but a little... how to put this, I hate when a protagonist is being railroaded into something she really doesn't care about.

Also ticked me off in Amnesia. "Do you want to go to visit him at work? Of course you do!"

Haruka as the first localized game had to be a troll move.

But man, I've put hundreds of hours into replays, alternate routes, and gameplay-specific alternate gaming modes into Sengoku Rance, Daibanchō: Big Bang Age, and the utterly PG-13 crossover Widenyo strategy games. There are legitimately well designed and fun strategy games, porn or not (in the case of Widenyo) that are freakishly addicting and replayable due to exclusive character recruitment, multiple paths, etc.

Well, as a business decision, I understand it. It's nonstop porn, which is basically the only thing that consistently sells decently for MG, and the actual gameplay/interface work needing to be translated/redone is pretty damn nonexistent compared to most. That stuff has a way of spiraling out of control very quickly. Gameplay does normally lend an air of legitimacy, but I think Haruka's is too simplistic, rote, and occasionally frustrating for its "fuck you, guess what ability's going to work best or when you're supposed to do this, and now you're going to punished for it" attitude (castle stuff especially) which will probably work against it. It'll probably do better than average for them, but then again, their average sales are generally pretty awful.

Greetings, my fellow doods! Chris King from NIS America here to give you some fresh information on our upcoming title, Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness.

We are happy to officially announce that the game is coming to Europe on 16th September for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita!

For those who may not know much about Psycho-Pass, allow me to share with you a brief history: Psycho-Pass originally began as an anime television series, airing in Japan in 2014. The anime received critical praise and quickly made its way to the West and grew to become very popular within the anime community. Written by Gen Urobuchi, best known for his dark style and unforgiving plot twists, Psycho-Pass tells a dystopian sci-fi tale for the ages…

    That Urobuchi name drop. 8-)

The thing is that it wasn't written by Urobuchi. At all. None of it was. Least of all the VN. That was written by a random committee of mostly no-name people with no involvement from him at all.

VN is written by Nitroplus without a solely credited writer, under the supervision of and original outline from of Gen Urobuchi. So no, he's not the writer of the VN. He's just one of the heads of the project.

S1 is written by Gen Urobuchi.
S2 is written by Tow Ubukata (Mardock Scramble, Le Chevalier D'Eon, etc. as well as literature/novellas).
Movie (S3) is co-written by Gen Urobuchi and Makoto Fukanami (newer writer, mostly live action outside of Psycho Pass).

I had a quick question about the When They Cry VN. I have not had a chance to play it yet but I saw that the anime for it was on Hulu so I watched. I was curious if anyone else had watched and how similar the anime is to the VN. I was assuming since it was based on the VN that each set of episodes is based on a different possible path and ending but then they brought up some weird connections between everything in the second or third to last episode.

I will probably be buying the VN off of steam soon so I will find out eventually but it might be a while.

I also wanted to ask if anyone has any suggestions for other good horror VN/anime. I played through Corpse Party and Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. I still need to finish Danganronpa 2 and 999 but it feels like there is a massive lack of good horror for this stuff.

As a sort of Anti-Urobuchi, I hated season 2 enough that I will avoid anything else this guy has a writing credit on.

"As a newcomer to this series, I have digested enough material of season 1 that I feel I can perfectly recapture the characterization and social views that made this series such a hit. So with season 2, I will be introducing extra gore, powerlevels, shittier characters and magic!"

I've heard the anime of Higurashi/WTC is very faithful. NOT UMINEKO'S. NO. GOD NO. Play the VN or nothing.

As for horror, you can't really top Saya no Uta. It's eroge city, but also the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. I couldn't get past more than two minutes of a video from the first scene. Another good one is the DS title, 'Nanashi no Game'(the Nameless Game), which was fan translated.

I actually forgot I have Saya no Uta. That was a really good one, I especially enjoyed it because I wrote a short story in my junior year of high school with a kind of inverse where the world was awful but the main character saw it a different.

I do not mind a VN with nudity if it has a really good story like Saya no Uta has.

How do I get a fan translated DS game? I searched in on Amazon but it looks like the only ones listed are Japanese.

    What is Umineko?

The spiritual successor to Higurashi/When They Cry. Higurashi is 'When The Cicadas Cry', Umineko is 'When The Seagulls Cry'. I really don't like the way they named the games in English.

Umineko is about witchcraft and fantasy VS fiction, about a family contending for fortune and an inheritance on the island of Rokkenjima, where a witch is rumored to hold sway. But is she real, or just a myth?
How do I get a fan translated DS game? I searched in on Amazon but it looks like the only ones listed are Japanese.

A wide variety of ways, I'll leave it at that.

One thing about the VNs: the main artist(Ryukishi07) is a master of conveying moods through expressions.

    Zero is being localized:

Everyone’s been waiting to hear from PQube, the western console publishers of the first Steins;Gate, about the western release of Steins;Gate 0 – and now we finally have news for you! PQube have confirmed with us that they are releasing Steins;Gate 0 in 2016 in both Europe & North America on PlayStation 4 & PlayStation Vita.

Steins;Gate 0 is the follow up to the award-winning and chart-topping Steins;Gate – the sci-fi time travel visual novel that took the west by storm just last year. There’s a reason everyone loves it so much. Steins;Gate 0 is more than a simple sequel, instead exploring a branch of one of Steins;Gate’s alternate endings. Okabe and the Future Gadget Lab members, along with new characters, star in this story about AI and the creation of something called “Amadeus” – which can allow you to interact with the store memories of another person.

Sadly the original localization team isn't involved, which I'm not fond of, so hopefully the new team is up to the task.

Because the latter one's key member was Jast's head translator.

My point was that the original team/release was rather poor and a very significant amount of work needed to be redone by a different, far superior translator, so being better than them isn't a high bar to clear.

So recently I bought an actually functional PC and got started on my Steam backlog. I blew through Analogue: A Hate Story and will be playing Day 3 of Hate Plus tonight (wtf real time game clock on that one though? Transparent attempt to stretch limited content?)

My question for the thread: has anybody played the Dev's earlier game, Digital: A Love Story? I heard about it and went to the free download page, but my browser freaked out and said it was an attack site. Is that download legit/ is this earlier game worth the trouble?

i've finally been working my way through ch2 and 3 of higurashi after buying them at steam release. i also bought umineko, but i read something that was basically "don't play umineko before finishing higurashi" - can anyone here comment?
My guess is, as a spiritual successor, playing Umineko could spoil some twist or aspect of Higurashi's story - but I'm not sure I really am that bothered by spoilers, so if that's the case, I'll probably play through Umineko anyway? they still have 5 chapters of Higurashi to get through anyway, and I don't think i'm patient enough for that wait

Umineko doesn't talk about Higurashi directly, but there's some references to it, including details that only came up near the end of Higurashi. I wouldn't recommend starting it until you've finished Higurashi.
