Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

and yet you read about shit that happens in criminal justice systems around the world and this magical balance has yet to be struck

honestly, I would love to explore a system that de-emphasizes punishment and views imprisonment (for example) as a way to keep people safe for some period of time

community service is intended as a punishment but then you just go "what is honestly wrong with doing community service?" and you realize that it was actually designed as a method of rehabilitation that has been implemented piss-poorly

well, punishment is one facet of deterrence

but people need to be accountable for their actions

what about all the crimes committed by people who are otherwise already functioning/contributing members of society?
do they just say they're sorry and go back to work?

and it's not the people working IN the system that are struggling, it's that they find themselves severely limited by public opinion, which sways political decisions, which then serves to dictate how corrective services "should" do their jobs

This is definitely not true in many parts of the U.S. It's pretty terrible.

i would absolutely agree that the balance is out of whack and that we focus too much on punishment and even retribution in the US but to say that punishment shouldn't be a factor at all is misguided even if well-intentioned
