Common Things That Will Get You Banned

Posting pornographic images, fetish pictures, or disturbing medical photos
This is a 13+ forum, and there are lots and lots of people to whom it is illegal to show that stuff. That means that you will be punished if you post something with the above content.

If something is borderline, LINK to it with a warning as to the content, or PM a mod before posting. If you're about to post something that could cause trouble for users browsing while at school or work, add a "NSFW" (Not Safe For Work) tag to the subject line. Particularly forbidden pictures include: goatse, lensman, tubgirl, lemon party, loopback, and harlequin baby. No erotic fanfiction, either. No one wants to read about Full House sex. Or do we? No, the answer is no. (Knob says no Rumsfeld/Cheney fanfics either)

There will be no more Ranger threads. Stop pestering mods and/or trying to start one.
Duck edit: To further clarify this, if I see people turning a non-picture thread into a Ranger spam I will at the minimum jail you for a month.
Knob edit: As there has been some recent confusion, a Ranger thread is hereby defined as any thread for the posting of pictures of women. So now you new guys don't have any excuses.

There will also be no more anime threads. They've moved to a new board. If you must discuss anime on these boards, there's a thread in D&D for on-topic, heavily-moderated discussion of anime. Burn with them.

Talking about ROMs, warez, or other bits of piracy
This is not an arguable point; this rule comes from those who make the forums possible. It will be enforced, and it is not a point on which we have the luxury of being flexible. Do not talk about the game you just torrented/p2p'd/DCC'd.

Sending offensive images through PMs
If you do this without permission from the recipient, you will have that ability removed.

Trolling
This has a working definition of "attempting to be as annoying as possible while still technically obeying the rules," and it's not the way to go about getting attention. There tends to be a thin line between being annoying and being funny. Those who cross it--whether through a lack of familiarity with the forums or as sad, twisted, bid for attention--will be banned.

Racism
No Racism. Not even that ironic "lol nigra stole my bike" racism. No. Bad.

This includes all usage of the "N Word" (god that sounds silly). Yes, even in nonserious or academic contexts.

NSFW
the reiteration
Sometimes a nsfw image will come up in the context of the conversation and be appropriate to link to with the label NSFW. The image shouldn't contain any nudity whatsoever. If it couldn't run in Maxim, it will probably get you banned. If anyone takes this to mean that as long as the context of the conversation is "Post hot sluts in thongs" it's okay to post nsfw images then you're going to be banned for quite some time.

[Bogey edit: Yes, this includes pictures with only signs covering your genitals.]

Participating in "forum raids"
This will earn you, at the very least, a temporary ban. It will more likely be a permanent ban. This sort of thing reflects badly on the main site, and we take it very seriously.

Common Mistakes That Will Get You in Trouble

Making a "Hi, I'm New!" thread
This forum sees a veritable tide of new users every day, and there would be no actual discussions going on if each and every one of you decided to make an introductory thread. Lurk for a while, get a feel for the place, find an active thread that interests you, and join the conversation. It would be a good idea to avoid hitting the new topic button for a few days unless you've got something staggeringly interesting to say. If you're making five new topics in your first hour YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG. It is also inadvisable to make your first post a new topic.

Beginning redundant threads
We are not a news service, but many of us check them frequently. Before you make a topic specifically to bring us a link, animation, or story, do a quick forum search for the URL and related keywords. If the only thing you're posting is the link, you might want to consider posting it in Linksville.

Plugging your personal website
This comes off rather badly if you do it too soon after joining. It is known as "site-whoring," and you will be flamed. If you want to plug your (or anyone else's) site, put a link in your sig

Starting a new thread asking why another thread was locked
PM a moderator if you really don't understand why a thread was locked. Also, do not make a thread solely for the purpose of referring to a thread that has been locked. Even if it's a joke thread, it's not funny enough to warrant it.

Failing to pay a modicum of attention to grammar and spelling
Nobody here demands epic poetry from other users, but posts that are incomprehensible will most likely be misinterpreted, ignored, or flamed.

Making alternate accounts, otherwise known as "alts"
Unless it's a terribly, terribly clever alt, expect to have it taken away. And keep in mind that if it's terribly, terribly stupid, you might be stuck with it.

Quoting the rules if you do not know them
Loudly and disruptively proclaiming a thread or post to be against the rules without being able to back up your accusation will come to no good.

Posting "in before the lock," "in before the sticky," or any variant thereof
It's not clever, and no one appreciates thread-assassination. If it needs to be locked, a mod will see to it.

Failing to use spoiler tags or spoiler warnings
This should be self-explanatory. If you're making a spoiler thread, include "SPOILERS" in the title. If you're posting a spoiler within an unlabeled thread, user the [ spoiler ] tags. We had to create the [realspoiler] tag just because people wouldn't listen to this rule. Messing with the [realspoiler] tag will get you executed off our board.

Breaking the h-scroll
Also understand that very few people who aren't running ridiculous settings will not care that it isn't breaking your h-scroll; if you're breaking it for a majority of forumers for no good reason, you might find yourself jailed.

Telling people how ______ you are right now
Unless your mom is posting on these boards, nobody fucking cares how drunk, high, tired, or depressed you are. You'll get at least jailed for this.

Having a gigantic sig
Sigs should be no larger than 80 pixels in height and around 50kb in size.

Necroposting
Unless you've got something incredibly insightful to say and a genuine interest in continuing the discussion, don't bump old threads that have died a natural death.

Signing your posts
That's what sigs are for.

Lyrics threads
No one reads/wants them, seriously, no more.

Pestering people about the whereabouts of the chat-room
There is one official PA chat room populated by much of the "Old Guard" and M2 folk, the PA Asylum, and it's located on IRC on sorcery.net, #pa_asylum. There is also an unofficial PA chatroom on IRC where many SE forumers hang out. You can find it at irc.slashnet.org, under #paforums. There is also a web page dedicated to forumer webcams.

How To Avoid Being a Flamed/Obliterated

Lurk
Reading threads and announcements without posting will help give you an instinctive idea of what will and will not be tolerated by the forum and the mods.

Display a basic level of familiarity with the comic
This forum is based on a comic. As a result of this, a moderate amount of the humor is liable to be drawn from that source. If you're not familiar with it, take the time you should be lurking in and go through the comic archives. You'll understand the jokes better for it, you'll stand less chance of embarassing yourself, and it'll be good for you. You know, because they're funny. And be sure to keep new comic commentary in the appropriate sticky.

Don't put spoilers in the title of your new-comic thread
People like to be surprised about this shit, so if you happen to have the honor of being the first person to make the new comic thread, don't put anything in your title about what the actual comic is, okay? Even if it's not the real title of the comic. The most it should really be is "New Comic: (insert date here)".

And finally, in the words of Pb, If you want to leave then just don't log on anymore.

If you suspect a poster is an alternate account of a banned poster, report the post using the supplied 'report' button. It's in the bottom right of each post. If you post "Thanks, <blank!>" or any similar 'witty' comeback, you will be infracted. Posts like those serve no purpose and actively take away from the conversation.

Obey At All Times The Glorious Edict
The only acceptable insult to use on these forums is restricted to "silly goose". Moderators are still excempt from this rule, since it has been deemed a psychological hazard to do otherwise, and also because this is an unfair dictatorship.

Hey,

First off, I haven't been around much these last few months, and for that I apologize. I went on vacation, other things got busy, couldn't get on the forums for a while during the day, etc. I had been checking in but not posting. I have lots of PMs to catch up on, so for those of you still waiting for a response I do promise to get to them.

Now, as far as Phallas go, we will be continuing them here in SE++ but not on a regular schedule. We have other subforums here that do that. I'll be getting back to those people who've been requesting to run games, and will put up a short list here soon.
