Song I know but can't remember driving me crazy

This is probably easy and I will kick myself.

It's old. It's sung by a guy. All I remember is in the refrain "and I ____ you like the desert ____ the rain."

I can hum it. I would recognize it instantly. But I can't find it because there are seven hundred million songs with similar lyrics and none of them are right.

Help me, H/A, I just want to buy this song. :(

The only one that's coming to me is "and I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" which is from Missing. I think it's by Everything but the Girl, so I guess that's not it.

That song has been covered to death, I don't think it's it..

This one's refrain is "I need you like the desert needs the rain." I'm not sure if it's the song, or even in the same style.

There was a "I miss you like the desert misses rain," but they seemed to be all female performers.

Or maybe it is it and I just can't find the person who sings it the way I'm thinking.

It was a man. The word might not be "desert". sighhhhhh

It's really old, as well. Like.. decades, I'm pretty sure.

If you can hum it, surely you know the tune and this should help.

Do you recall the style of music? Bluesy, ballady, rocky, jazzy, some other thing ending in y?

  • ceresceres not beautiful like you Pennsylvania, USASuper Moderator, Moderator mod
    I don't know.. old. 50's 60's 70's old. I'm sure there was a guitar in there somewhere.

    Okay, *probably* not 50's.

I am sure of "I ___ you like the ___ ___ the rain."

That's... that's not much, is it?

    Country music, perhaps?

    Chorus:
"He rolls in like a southwest wind hot off of the plains She needs the love he brings like the desert needed rain This high rise life shes living is beginning to get her down But its all better now cause her cowboys back in town"

    It's pretty common in Country.

"You've got to treat her right, understand
That she's your woman and you're her man
Tell her that you need her
Like the desert needs the rain
And if you treat her right, show her you care
When you need her she'll be there
Like an island in the storm, a beacon in the night
If you love her, treat her right"

    Or perhaps U2, Hawkmoon 269?

    Opening Line:
    "Like a desert needs rain
Like a town needs a name
    I need your love

Like a drifter needs a room
    Hawkmoon
    I need your love
    I need your love "

Another common lyric is "Like Flowers need the rain" or "Like Roses need the Rain" (Something like "In These Arms", a Bon Jovi song).

Can you nail down a genre?

It's not country.. I mean I would be shocked if it was. I want to say it's something that could have been popular in the 60's.

Here's my punt - based on the 60's feel, and mention of "the rain"

Sting - Desert Rose? :| It has the words desert and rain and a guy singer, though it's not a perfect fit.

Maybe you should try SoundHound (if you have a smartphone) or Midomi. You can search by humming (preferably at least 10 seconds of the song).

I asked my wife and she said the Bee Gees -- and at least one other similar question thread online has someone mention the Bee Gees as well. However, we can't actually find any Bee Gees song with those lyrics.

Since you said you weren't sure it was desert, I'd say America, I need you, but someone else already posted that so I guess that's out.

When someone says, "A song with desert and rain and love in the lyrics," this is unfortunately the first thing that comes to mind:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.

I'm familiar with that song. It's not that song or any version of it. It's really old, probably from the 60s or so, I'm guessing. The America song made me think of possible alternate lyrics, but is also not it. This is pretty frustrating, and I wish my memory would give me more to go on.

I didn't realize how cliche "[generic plant] need[s/ing] the rain[ s]/water" was until this thread. It's like all artists must make a song about this in order to get anywhere.

L Ron, same for me. I knew about the Everything But the Girl one, and the one I'm thinking of, and that's it.

The only two things to come from this thread so far are 1) I don't remember the lyrics for this one line as well as I thought I did and 2) I'm thinking of making a playlist called "NOPE" from all the songs I've discovered thanks to this thread that are completely wrong but I like anyway.

I don't know if anyone has suggested it yet (I'm at work so the videos don't come up for me) but could it be Turn Me On? Norah Jones does a version of it, but it's originally from the 60s and has been covered by quite a few singers I believe. It definitely has that old timey feel to it.
