Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
dinner is at the marliave, 10 bosworth street, 8pm on friday, april 6th. price is $47 for a prix fixe menu. please rsvp.
Boy, that's a lot of letters.
April 6-8 is PAX and we're planning on throwing together another quasi-fancy dinner in Boston. Generally it's largely populated by D&D [chat]ters but anyone else who can hold their liquor and be interesting for a few hours is more than welcome!
Previously we've gone with Friday night and I see no reason to break the tradition. So,
1) Restaurant ideas?
2) RSVP you butts.
Dress Code
As is the tradition, this is a fancy dinner. It won't be white tablecloth, but all the same we would love if everyone dresses as classy as they can manage. I understand that not everyone has scads of formal clothing. I also get that some of you are already stretched thin with how much luggage you're bringing. That's ok. Optimally I'd hope for the standard to be suits and dresses... but if you can't do that, you're still welcome. Just please try do what you can to keep up the atmosphere that so many of us have been looking forward to all year. Please don't wear denim or a tshirt or whatever.

The restaurant at the top of the prospective list is probably Marliave. It was the choice in 2011. It's located at 10 Bosworth Street, Boston, MA 02108.
The pluses are that we're familiar with the place, the service was great, the food was fantastic, and there are two full bars.
The potential cons are pretty much:
a) the menu's a little bit closed off. I just called and confirmed that for a party our size, we have to accept a condensed menu. They'd work with me and I'd happily try to accomodate most tastes, but it can work out to no more than four of any course (leaving the vegetarians or 'non-fancy-food' people with sometimes only one option). As I said, the food is delicious... but it's a consideration.
b) it's a bit expensive for some of our crowd. Last year a meal was, I think, $36? That covered every course, but still- it's not a $7 burger and Pepsi, as are many of the hurriedly-eaten-over-your-warhammer-figurines-you-disgusting-neckbeards meals people grab over the weekend. So, for a lot of people the shock of a $3x meal and then a $30 bar tab can be real lame for one night. I definitely think it's a high quality experience- and I believe that opinion was almost universal last year. But it may be that we have to downscale the price range a bit this year, since some folks were hurting last time. That is largely up to y'all.
So what do you guys think?
marliave: $43/head
eastern standard: starting at $45/head
trade: $65/head

"Those people who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do."
I would like to try to make it up, but it's doubtful. Stupid money and the not having enough to travel.
I would like to point out, Mr. Organ E. Chu, Esq., that no self-respecting neckbeard would eat over his or her Warhammer figurines.
False! I use my Warhammer figurines as a placemat to distract the food and prevent it from seeking out my Warmachine figurines.

Marliave was pretty decent from what I remember. Chinatown is about 20 minutes away on foot from the convention center, but Marliave's is more than that. For the most part I'd expect it to be a taxi situation from the convention center to dinner (but not necessarily from hotels depending on where you're staying)
Marliave was great, and honestly not that hard to get to even from the public transit, so I'm totally down for that again. Also beef wellington...mmm... Can't wait to close the bar down with you guys again this year!
The asian place from two years ago was probably better for me for food, but Marliave was much more prepared for a group of our size. Also, I liked not having to go to a separate location afterward for drinks.
if it'd be most convenient for everyone i'm all for doing it again. at the same time, most of us are only in boston like once every never, so i wouldn't mind entertaining other tasty alternatives if they're viable
yeah last year was $34 per person and there were a few complaints but most people were fine. i think anything higher than $35/head would probably be too much
been calling around most of the night, made a thread on a local forum
having some trouble hmmm
i guess i'll ask now: are people potentially ok with it costing more like low-mid $4x/head?
or, in the opposite direction i guess: would people be receptive to the idea of feeling goofy overdressing in a less spendy place? or shifting the dress code down?

This time I will try not to be late by dropping my suit pants in the parking lot of the convention center.

then erase all five of their names and be like organichu + 5
because i have sexual magnetism, you see
does that mean everyone is basically ok with low to mid $30? (this of course doesn't include drinks)
if so, do people want to do marliave again?
or would people prefer something a little more foreign? chinatown is walking distance from the convention and the downtown hotels.
weigh in por favor so i can do more focused research

you fancy huh
but if I do, I'll definitly do a dinner.
You have to fight through some bad days, to earn the best days of your life.
the marliave was pretty alright
if it'd be most convenient for everyone i'm all for doing it again. at the same time, most of us are only in boston like once every never, so i wouldn't mind entertaining other tasty alternatives if they're viable
so i've been speaking with a coordinator at the marliave
it seems like their prices have gone up (or there was a discount last year because of restaurant week)
there is necessarily a condensed menu for a party of our size and the price would be $42 per person, which is $8 more than last year
given that information i assume this will shove enough people out to kick this restaurant out of contention
so... any boston area people who have other recommendations, chop chop!
There is that steak house, although that's probably in the wrong direction price/class-wise. There's always the north end, too.
