Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

In the future, Penny Arcade's mobile website will be a treat to use, well designed and just basically the best.

    Of course not. I mean
    There's three of them
And I only have one butt.

    I don't take myself seriously.
You shouldn't take me seriously either.

    humanity can't do shit

we are living in a tiny blue dot compared to the rest of reality, while we ourselves are insignificant compared to the rest of our planet

even if we kill off life as we know it, something will replace it

    we aren't important

If that's the case then everything is tiny. Everything is insignificant when compared to the scope of the universe.

Stars, galaxies, planets, globular clusters, black holes, nebulae, dark matter, quasars, wormholes, moons, magnetars, dwarf planets, coronae, accretion discs, asteroids, comets and all sentient life, past present and future, in every conceivable corner of this and all possible universes. All are just as insignificant as one another. All just as tiny in the grand scheme. Therefore all you can have, all anyone can ever have is what is in front of your face. There is nothing else. There is no wider universe, just man's ever expanding reach.

We are not insignificant, we are everything. To suggest that our passing wouldn't even register as a footnote of a footnote is our way of excusing our failures as being the inevitable consequence of reality, the unthinkable forces of nature. As though fucking up the Earth is fine because something will replace us. Something, whatever strange and peculiar shape it forms, something somewhere else will carry on and not even notice that we're gone. Gone, into the veiled mists of time like the echoes of a long, distant cry for help.

Well I'm sorry but I don't ascribe to that notion. I don't feel that humanity is insignificant or unimportant or small. I'm positive that the universe is littered with the crumbling remains of a billion untold civilizations who all thought that they were small and meaningless and of little or no consequence to their own planet, let alone their galaxy or the whole universe. I say fuck that. Fuck them. Fuck the universe. We may be small and pathetic right now. But we're slightly less small and pathetic than we were a thousand years ago when we first began to understand the cosmos. Than we were ten thousand years ago when we first wrenched control of the land from mother nature herself. Than we were a hundred thousand years ago when our primitive ancestors first fled the savannah and began paving the way for our mighty ascent.

And we'll be bigger and stronger tomorrow, and the day after. And every day until the heat death of our sun. And if we are strong we'll move on to another star, another world to call our own, to conquer and bend to our will. Becoming bigger and better. With each passing moment, humanity becomes less insignificant and our failures become less excusable. Until one day, across the endless infinities of space and time, at the end of all things when we have marshalled all of our unstoppable might and reversed the inexorable expansion of the universe: then, and only then, will the universe be the thing that is small and insignificant and pathetic. And until that day comes, to laugh away our diminutive status among the heavens, to simply shrug our shoulders and say to the world 'so it goes' is to deny the very thing that makes us human.

For man reaches his perfection, not through what he has, not even through what he does, but entirely through what he is. If you want to lie down and accept the inevitable, you are welcome to do so. But I'll be over here with the rest of mankind, fucking the universe in its ass every day until it submits. For if the universe is endless, if it is outside of time and space and we are but a spot of ink on its back page, then there is nothing else to do but take up arms and fight the inherent injustice of this damned universe that we find ourselves. If humanity is not long for this place, I intend to go down fighting, not mewling in a corner about how small we are and how inescapable our fate may be.

This sure made me proud to be a human

It's probably more likely we'll have rendered our planet inhospitable to large human civilization before the sun is gone. Not that I subscribe to antimatters 2011 views, sentient life is valuable inherently

If humanity survives the 21st Century, as I believe it will, it's going to flourish for a long time. Because with all the shit hitting us largely of our own making, if we can beat this, we can beat anything.

I also expect humans to eventually find a way to tell relativity to shove it, and effectively travel faster than light.

    I don't wanna kill anybody. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from.
