Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Hey folks! Iruka suggested that I start posting on this super cool forum. It will be a good habit to get into
once I graduate from MICA in May. Most of the work below is part of my thesis. I'm trying to build a portfolio
focused in concept art in hopes of getting into the gaming industry. I would really like feedback on all of my
posts because critiques are the best tools for improvement. Besides concept art I still love and try to take part
in the rest of the illustration community including comics. The last image is part of a comic I've been working
on for over a year now about a dude named Dr. Nimbus. I'm looking forward to being part of the community,
if you'd like to see the rest of my past work, it can be seen at my BLOG
Way cool arts! Like Iruka, your art is super imaginative, with great use of color.
I also really like that comic and would like to see more. I kinda wish that the gutters were smaller because it seems like even though it's nice to let the panels breathe, I'd prefer to have the art take up more space. I also think that the layout itself could be a little more lively, because the art is so wild, but the way the panels are laid out is very basic and uniform.
@ earthwormadam : I have 5 other Nimbus comics on my blog with the same format. I definitely agree that they are pretty rigid. I've been a little wary about changing the format until after the 7th one is complete since I'm making a small book to sell and I feel if I stray too far from the others it will seem out of place. But after that one is done I will be expanding to more dynamic layouts.
@McJohnstable : working with more dramatic lighting is one of my goals for winter break. James Gurney came for a visit to MICA and I picked up his book Color and Light which I hope will help. It's a cool book that I suggest to all
Also, I didn't notice, but the colors came out a little different on my comic when I posted it on the forum. Not really sure why, but Ill try to figure it out.
Wow, your colors are truly amazing. That landscape at the top is particularly impressive. I didn't notice at first glance, but is that Roger standing at the bottom of the frame?
@ The_Glad_Hatter : I didn't save for web, Ill try that next time. I've posted the image on other online locations, without problems, but this is the first time posting to a forum. Thanks!
@ Crabomancer : Yeah that is Roger at the bottom. He doesn't have his red cape yet in that part of the story.
Also this!
I'm working on the next Dr. Nimbus comic. A lot of people have been kind of disappointed in the boxed layouts so I'm going to try something completely different. He is going after a Lunapeach that grows underground on this certain planet. Instead of many panels I thought I would try a single page of sequential actions similar to the sixth panel in the other comic I posted: Dr. Nimbus vs The Amphibandits. This is a rough sketch but I've started working on some of the caves one at a time. Let me know what you think!
Hey folks! So I haven't posted in a while because of all the working and graduation just around the corner, but I thought I would pop in for some updates. Let the image dumping commence!
I normally just lurk around here, but I had to post and say I love your work. Blown away by the creativity and the use of color. I'd really love to see more of Rogers's world and read his story.
Thanks! All of my work is digital, but i import textures in my brushes and on the canvas I'm working on that I scanned from traditional medium like characoal, guache, and water color. I'm still in the process of writing the story, but once I piece enough of it together it will make its way to the forums.
this stuff is great. really interesting texture and shape. You could push the atmosphere a bit more in the first image. Some of the information in the background is competing a bit to much for attention.

Thanks Ken, Ill try and pump that atmosphere more when I go into final editing. The background is the focal point, but the tower's information is getting a lost. Here is my latest:
I think one think that might help make the images more visually appealing is to bump up the dark/light contrast. You can use intense light to pull the eye around each scene very easily. Caravaggio comes to mind personally when ever I think about great use of lighting. Just a thought.
I agree with zollmaniac, and added to that I think be slightly more considerate on what hard and soft brushes you use, and when. I think the last piece looks great, but the one before it:
While still visually stunning, feels less refined around the water area due to being too soft and not having many distinct shapes (even water ripples can have harder edges).
Reloading a few things and some new stuff

ALSO! I am now a full college graduate with my BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Hooray!
That means I would looooove me some freelance work. If anybody has any favorite searching methods
or any job he or she thinks I might be a good fit for I would be super appreciative. My website has been
revamped as well : Zach Illustration. Thanks everybody!
Holy shit another person who goes to MICA on here? I just finished up my freshmen year and am a IDA major! Figures I start going on the forums as soon as you graduate.
Hey folks, I'm looking for a crit on a work in progress. I've been pushing paint around the last few sessions but haven't really gotten anywhere. This is Khal Drogo after he dies. His spirit lingers in the mountains of the shadow lands! oOoOoOoO o__o I don't know what that red swoop is yet btw.
His lack of a neck isn't doing it for me; I think his shoulders need to slope more up into his head for my brain to accept the stylization there, particularly since we seem to be looking up at his chest but fairly straight-on at his head. Really murky crit I know but I look forward to where this is going.
So I know it's been a while, but I still want to post on here! So here is some more work, and this time Ill try to actually respond to the crits. I really appreciate the feedback too! Ok so just to get things rolling-here's a bulbasaur. I started the pokemon challenge of drawing all original 151 in order. Here is #001.
So I'm trying to make a promo piece to send out to children's book publishers to try for some freelance. Here is what I got so far. Everything is basically there in terms of major components, other smaller things will be added in later for details and such but something doesn't quite feel right. Any ideas?
nice, so much to say about some of these. the 5th image you posted looks like it could be a map system in a minecraft type game. the latest one definetly has some awesome lighting effects for being out of your comfort zone, i would like to see a graphic novel with that level of lighting detail in large panels
Really like that last painting, there's a really nice painterly feel you captured :)Thematically I also like that you did a new spin on Steampunk. Really like it.

Welcome!
And like EWA said, great sense of color. Don't know where you guys get it from.

What medium do you work with for these?
Keep it up and keep posting.
I also love that you have women characters that are something other than model skinny.

This is a warning that my sig was too tall.
You could have sent me a PM or something.
I stared at the first one for a long while before even realizing the trees are humanoid just under the leaves.
