I looked around but didn't see a topic that was already created -- does anyone have any recommendations for a Blu-Ray player? This would be replacing the DVD players I have hooked up to our tv right now. I have no desire to do anything with 3D.
Brands to stay away from? Brands to buy? Features that you can't do without?
What's your budget? If it's $150 (the bulk of the good ones fall in this range), you might as well splurge the extra $100 and get a PS3. It's the best blu-ray player money can buy honestly.

The PS3 is an awesome BluRay player. Don't bother getting the BluRay remote for it, though. I got one, and I have to re-authorise it every time I want to use it, so I just stick with the dualshock.
I'd consider buying the same brand as your tv and/or receiver as there may be some cross compatibility w/r/to remotes and the brand usability logic may provide you some usefulness. I kinda trashed LG's SmartLink in the Computer Build thread, but it was pretty slick and easy to use, just didn't offer some functionality that I needed.

If you don't need wireless, the Panasonic BDT-110 is generally considered to be very good. If you do need wireless, the BDT-210 is highly recommended. One of the cheaper LG models is supposed to be good as well.

Really? I've never had to do that with mine.
I dunno why, but every time I turn the PS3 off, nope, time to re-authorise. I looked through the settings multiple time to see if I could 'pair' it to the PS3 like you do with a phone and a bluetooth headset, but I couldn't find anything.
A lot of the players use Java, and... well... it's Java. If you've got a slow booting one or a slow "you just put in that disc" one it's probably a Java player of some variety.

Outside of the look of it and the less than stellar control options the PS3 is really the best bang for your buck. I had to get the 50 dollar adapter just to use it with my Harmony remote but it integrated nicely so it was worth the price to me.
I use the PS3 as my primary in my area now although we have a LG BD550 in the living room and it's always done what it's supposed to do. It fits your price range at about 100 bucks shipped from Amazon.
I bought the parents an LG BD630 for Christmas and it's worked fine so far. It was simple to setup and has an easy to use interface (essential for my technologically challenged mother). The Netflix interface is on the pokey side, but playback has been fine. No problems with disc playback thus far, either.
EDIT: I noticed that it's only wired network connectivity; which is fine for me, my router sits on my entertainment center in my apartment. I did notice that it ships without an HDMI cable, however. Do I need a male-to-male, or what kinds of ends do I need for it? I was looking at http://monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240 - are the standard $2.00 cables any worse than the expensive ones? I know about the whole Monster cable scam, but are these any different?

Well you'll probably need one longer than 1.5ft, but yes you're on the right track. Monoprice cables work just as well as anything else (all of my HT cables are Monoprice).

Monoprice is definitely the way to go for cables. Bluejean is another good option.
At this point you're not going to see really much of a difference in players besides features. It's like DVD players at this point, you buy one and it plays DVDs. There's plenty of blu-ray players that don't offer networking but at this point you're looking at completely relevant players that are 60 bucks on Amazon that include all that stuff. So just disable it I guess if you don't want it?
I was just concerned because the ones I see in brick & mortars are like $120 and up and cram in all those things that are utterly redundant with my current set-up, just trying to save some money by not paying for something I won't use

I use one of these (no idea why they cost more, I got mine for half of that), and I don't have to reauthorize it or anything.
the reviews are fairly positive

Anyway I bought it open box for a pretty good discount and I don't need Wifi, so I got what I paid for I guess.
Very odd. No such issue with the Blu-link remote.
