Does this game have a Checklist like Kirby Air Ride and Brawl? Is that what they mean by "mini-achievements" or is there a new system?
I think Brawl's Challenges are the best achievement-type thing that's been done so far. Kirby Air Ride was almost identical except most of the boxes didn't have prizes in them.
Don't remind me that the world is due for another SSB. One with online that works. Put it on DS, make millions, Nintendo.
It's coming... well on 3DS that is.

Super Smash Bros. is so twitch-oriented that I don't think it'll ever work well online.

You could say that about every fighting game though, and some work great online. I haven't played very many of them, but SSFIV3D versus Brawl is night and day. The lag (in matches between Kentucky and Alaska!) is so minimal that I didn't really ever notice it and I certainly didn't feel like I messed up because of it. Brawl is a totally different story.
I really hope they go someone who knows what they're doing (like Capcom or Tecmo) and get them to do the online implementation. But, Sakurai did say that Uprising matches between North America and Japan worked well, so depending on how well that is, maybe they can do it.
But because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.
you can get an extremely decent game of brawl online if everyone involved has an insanely good internet connection, but yes, I hope they bring in one of the fighting game netcode specialists for SSB4.

The only time I've had a decent online Brawl session is when I played with a cousin that lived like 10 miles away.
Nintendo can get online right. Mario Kart is proof of that.
I'm sure with all the problems and complaints of SSBB, they'll make sure that online works well with the next SSB game.
Well, online for a racing game and online for a fighting game are pretty different.
Yeah, even Mario Kart DS worked great online (interface aside).
Mario Kart DS does lag compensation by assuming everything is going to stay the way it is until it gets more information. So if it knows player A is moving at 50Mph in frame 1, then it will assume they continue moving at 50Mph in frame 2, and doesn't have to wait for that frame data to arrive for it to show that. So it keeps two sets of data: "last known position/speed" (the data received over wifi, which is always behind by however much lag there is) and "assumed position" which is a real-time assumption of where they would be if they kept moving at the rate of the "last known position/speed", and is what it shows on-screen. I believe Mario Kart Wii and 7 do roughly the same thing, but with a better implementation.
If you did something similar for a fighting game, it would be pretty unplayable. You'd hit someone, they'd go flying, only for you to find out they actually blocked it and didn't go flying at all. So Brawl doesn't do any sort of lag compensation-- it makes sure all data is received by all parties before it's acted on. I don't really know what games like SSFIV3D do to avoid these problems, though.
Apparently the 3D animation short is up on Nintendo Video right now for NA 3DSs.
This game has the style and pizazz that I quite enjoy.

Truth be told, I am actually loving the cornball dialogue and enemies in this game. It's very much like a Saturday morning cartoon. I almost hope they have at least one "Icus" joke in the game. 8->
Persevere and the initially dorky control method will become less jarring and more intuitive, and eventually the game’s vast potential will poke its head out to say hello. Kid Icarus: Uprising is a maelstrom of debilitating weirdness, it’s challenging almost to the point of seeming unwelcoming, and it does its utmost to convince you you’re not in any way worthy. But come into it with some tenacity and it’ll reward you with literal and figurative heart.
In the on-foot sections of most chapters you’ll also find Intensity Gates – locked doors that will only open if you’re playing at or above the required intensity. The temptation to push yourself harder and achieve more by risking everything you’ve got is always there, like an aggressive motivational trainer or a floor-to-ceiling Ladbrokes poster.

Did Edge actually say that, or just give it the same score?
And after watching the video earlier and considering the dialogue, I can't help but think that this looks like it could be a franchise in the making. An animated series seems like it could work, as does a toy line (considering vehicles and things).
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!

So does this count as a "New IP" so the "Nintendo should stop using the same damn characters over and over again" crowd can shush for a bit?

No it's not a new IP. The IP question is generally character-based, if we've seen the guy before then it's not new.
Nintendo could make a realistic dinosaur island safari simulation with raptor-esque Yoshis and that would still not be new IP, for the sake of argument.
And on the other side of things, they could make a new platformer that borrows a ton of elements from Mario but in a new setting with different characters, and that would be considered new IP. But the complainers would probably say it doesn't count because it's the same sort of gameplay.
Kid Icarus in particular seems to go to great lengths to ensure that most characters from the original game return, such as they are. It doesn't want to be new IP.
Dillon's Rolling Western has great potential though, it's a new sort of game for Nintendo and a new character and setting. I hope we see development there into fully-fledged retail software.
I swear. This seems like the most ambitious 3DS title so far. I really hope it has the little grim reapers that freak out and chase after you when you get near them.
I see there is a giant one in the preview, but I hope there are the comical mini ones as well.
Edit. Ah! I see it is in there. The Medusa Trailer has it.
Unfortunately, the voice acting is leaving something to desired. The delivery is too generic. I did like the "I'm finished." reference though. They are definitely maintaining the quirkiness of the original. There is bit of "killer app" feel to this one.
