I've flown nothing but Cruisers and they've been pretty good. I went with the Envoy-class rather then the Galaxy though. Not a bad 'modern' update to the look.
Right now I'm flying a mutt of an Assault Cruiser: a Sovereign-class saucer on a Noble-class body. I've also got three of the four-piece Borg set for the ship after grinding some STF Fleet Actions, which alters it's look some.
Speaking of STFs, I still plan to run a Normal-difficulty Fleet-run into this week's feature STF, Khitomer Accord. I'm aiming for a 7PM-9PM (EST) window to do so if everyone's fine with that.
I only bought escorts on my way up, and I liked all of them except the Akira. For some reason, I don't know if it was a lull in my gear, or just the ship, but I died all the time.
It's because you were going up against Romulans, who were (and still are, to an extent) HORRIBLY overpowered.

It'd be handy BTW to read up on what's been going on with the Romulans between Nemesis and STO. Leadership's changed hands more then once in the thirty-odd years it took them to get back together in some semblance of the Empire.
EDIT: I took a look at the F2P trailer when I heard it wasn't simply the new version of the game's intro. Pretty epic and a nice appearance by a familiar name by the end.

Yes, there's a tailor at every major quest hub, you can fully customize everything about your dude, except race.

It is done in a style very similar to City of Heroes, you can buy (with the in game currency) changes to your face, hair, size, etc, as well as change your uniform around, or even make an off duty outfit as well. There are some items to be purchased with store credits as well but you get a nice set starting out in my opinion.
Everything's free content. Some chat restrictions, and you have to grind a little more to get to the next ship tier. Nothing too substantial, just enough to push a few people to the C-store.
First Fleet/PA-STF Night was a success! Thanks to those that came along with me to rock both Space and Ground portions of the Khitomer Accord STF. From left to right in the Vice-Admiral coats are Lars Zachary, Evigilant, Falmor and Morkath. I'd have a gun out myself but I was glitched for some reason there.

Got some random mineral deposit mission trying to do the needs of the many quest. The whole time my crew and the enemies constantly fell beneath the map, causing my crew to not move, and future enemies to be able to flank me without me being able to shoot them. Glorious.
edit: Brings up a good question though, what exactly happens when you are incapacitated?
If you mean if you're killed during the away-team portion of a mission, your Bridge Officers and/or Security keep fighting. If they win the fight, one of them will revive you unless you hit the 'Call For Help' button while they're still fighting. Then one of them breaks off from the fight to revive you on the spot.

You can change your appearance, your ship's appearance and your Bridge Officers' appearances. The game even allows you to tweak your body and the BOs' in almost everything but race. It's a step up from CoX where you have to pay to unlock that portion of the character-creator/tweaker in the game's store.

There is no death penalty on normal difficulty. Once you move it up you will start taking injuries and need the items to fix them.

After completing the tutorial, you're tasked to go to Earth Spacedock to get your first promotion as well as keep the ship you flew in the tutorial. You can shell out some money in the C-Store though to unlock new Lv1-10 ships that will give you a better taste of what the Fed-ship classes are like: TOS-Constitution for Cruisers, Enterprise-NX for Escorts and Search For Spock's Obeirth for Science. I dunno about the Obeirth but the Constitution and NX also bring ship-items that level up with you.
It's perfectly ok to stick with the original starter-ship. I myself only got the TOS-Constitution and NX because of giveaways at the time. I do love BTW how in the NX's entry in the ship and C-Stores, the in-verse reason for it being around at all in the 25th Century outside of museums was pretty much because it'd be cool.
After Starfleet starships were converted to a modular design, a group from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers working at Utopia Planitia wondered if vessels from the Federation's past could be constructed in this manner. Working with Federation historian Geoffrey Pacelli, the SCE officers chose the famed NX Class for reconstruction. The NX Class Starship Replica sports the classic look of Earth's starships from the 22nd century, but has been updated with modern technology to meet current Starfleet specifications for Lieutenant-rank missions. It carries a crew of 85, and in a nod to the technology of the 22nd Century the SCE has added a Grappler, which is less efficient than a tractor beam but can hold an enemy for a short time.

Something I've noticed about the Khitomer Accord STF is that it's story seems to have gotten a bit broken when it was seperated from one large mission into two separate ones. After looking around online, I found videos of a run prior to the portion-breakup of the STF to let you guys see for yourselves just how it ran originally and how it's meant to tie into the game's tutorial mission. Seeing it's four videos, I put all but the first in the box.
