Cleaning my walls

I have noticed that in a few places I have what I guess are stains and whatnot (many from the previous owner, I think?). None of them seem very deep or anything and I'm just curious what the best cleaner is to use on a bog standard wall with bog standard white paint. While water will probably get rid of most of the stuff (I think a lot is just dust) there is some stuff I think might need a bit higher strength to get rid of.

TSP. Any kind of hardware store should have it from $5. - http://www.homedepot.ca/product/trisodium-phosphate-powder-400-g/912197

When my sister moved out of my appartment, there were alot of discolored areas on the walls where things like beadsheets/pillows had rubed aginst the wall and some dye/particles discoloring the wall. We just put some comet on a damp washrag and rubed the areas down. Stuff came right off. This was i think just plain drywall painted off white.
