So we get stiff once in a while. So we have a little fun. What’s wrong with that? This is a free country, isn’t it? I can take my panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.

The Pong Su incident occurred during April 2003 when members of Special Operations Command (Australia) intercepted and boarded the Pong Su, a 4,000 ton North Korean ocean freighter in Australian territorial waters. The ship was flying the flag of Tuvalu at the time, known as flying a flag of convenience. The boarding of the freighter was carried out by members of both TAGs and the Incident Response Regiment whilst the ship was underway in rough seas. The reason for apprehending the ship was that it was suspected of being involved in smuggling almost 125 kg (300 pounds) of heroin into Australia. The Pong Su was berthed in Sydney and the crew extradited to Victoria for prosecution. The Pong Su was later sunk by a Royal Australian Air Force F-111, using two 2000lb laser-guided bombs.

    O_o

I was not aware of this. How do you suspect a ship of smuggling heroin when it hasn't docked yet? What was the point in bombing it with two tons of explosives with air force jets?

Still reading the Kotaku article on japan (taking breaks now and then because it's dense), but Japan sounds like a foreign country, something that might be hard to adapt to for a foreigner!

    amazing, i know.

It does make me want to experience it some time, though... maybe i should go to Japan sometime.

They probably had no use for it, weren't going to return something used for international smuggling, and needed practice bombing ships.

Damn it Bethesda, in Fallout I can't go ten feet without being attacked by something, but now that leather is useful for crafting in Skyrim, I can wander around the wilderness for half an hour without encountering another living thing.

Here's a blog of someone who has lived there for 20 years discussing things she likes and dislikes about living in Japan.
I'm not a big subscriber to the "weird Japan" mentality. One of the reasons I don't get so into it is that so much of it is clearly manufactured to be novel (e.g., maid cafes) and is little different than similarly generated oddness in other cultures which links not to human nature, but calculated commercial interests. However, when the weirdness manifests as a small component of a larger "normal" aspect of culture, my interest is piqued, and that is where we arrive at "akapantsu" or "red underpants". Sugamo is an area of Tokyo with a shopping district, Jizo Dori, which is described as an old folks Harajuku. The shops carry items of interest to the grey-haired set, but they also sell red underwear which is popular because the color red has positive associations in Buddhism. In particular, it wards off disease. So, many elderly flock to the red undies store and purchase over a million of them a year in order to gird their loins with red hot undergarments.

I will miss this odd contradiction in the conservative nature of older Japanese people and the way they dress and behave with an attraction to buying colorful and flashy underwear.

Now to figure out who the teams that are playing are and the names of their throwy guys so I can sound like I am at all familiar with football.

Yes, because boybands were always groundbreaking and unafraid of artistic experimentation, right?

man, i'm finding it really difficult to get back to sleep nowadays. i can usually get to sleep in the first place without a big hassle. but the first time i wake up to pee or walk the dog or whatever, i'm just fucking up. woke up at like 3am and now i'm gonna have to power on until tonight, because if i sleep early i'm just gonna wake up in the middle of the night again and reinforce the cycle. blech.
