So for Christmas my significant other and I received a Samsung 5-series 1080p TV, but as our old TV was a 20-something inch with a built in DVD player, we're lacking a DVD player now for the new TV. I don't really keep up with TV tech in general though, so I'm kind of lost. I'm seeing items like http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DVP-SR500H-1080p-Upscaling-Player/dp/B0039XRUBM/ref=sr_1_2?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1326673896&sr=1-2 this, which are listed as a "1080p upscaling DVD player", but my understanding is that this isn't true 1080p? For someone who is entering the market fresh at this point, is Blu-Ray the way to go?
EDIT: I believe the particular model I listed doesn't even have a HDMI output, so I don't understand how this can be 1080p at all. Industry bullshit?
EDIT: Saw the other thread; re-posted in there....I don't see a way to delete this thread, though, so if a mod could help me and close this thread out. Thanks much

Upconversion basically sharpens edges. You cannot get 1080P out of 480P source, but you can make 480P source look less blurry on a 1080P panel. As for should you go Blu_ray, well it doesn't make sense to not buy a Blu-Ray player since they'll play DVD's too. Blu-Rays are more expensive than DVD's though, and DVD's are going to be around for awhile.
You can do 1080P over component, it doesn't support HDCP though, and some gaming consoles limited their component output to 720P or something.
My dad has the BD650 (which I think is yours plus 3D Blu-Ray) and it's good enough at what it does.
