    :(

I don't understand this mindset, because repeated plays have diminishing returns. Sure, you've played 3 times as many games as the next person, but every subsequent game you play is going to have a much smaller impact on your skill level than it is for your friends. Eventually they will catch up.

Depends on how complex the game is. If it takes a dozen games to learn most of the mechanics competently then you'll certainly be at an advantage.

Well of course he has an advantage now. But if you don't even have a grasp of the game, why stop playing because you're losing to someone who does? That makes even less sense.

I learned Magic by playing with people who had years of experience on me. It took months of playing and consistently losing to catch up, but now I am just as good as they are even though they have ~5 years of playing the game that I don't have. I have reached the point where anything they are learning I can learn just as easily. Games have a relative skill ceiling and while I haven't reached it, I've definitely achieved the point most people start to slow down dramatically.

For me personally, I don't want to go through the frustration of losing constantly in order to get better at the game. I can improve by playing people at my level, it's just slower.

I'm not playing the game to improve at the game, I'm playing the game to have fun, and being good at the game means I have more fun. But I'm not willing to go through a bunch of playthroughs that are frustrating and not-fun just to get better at the game faster.

I don't think losing is a bad thing. You are highly likely to play people who are better than you, because they are likely the ones to introduce the game to you. It's like chess...how many people discover chess at the same time as their friends? If you have the option of playing with other new people, that's great. I certainly would choose to play them instead of the best player(s) in the room. Sometimes, however, the only avenue is to suck it up and learn to play the game with people who are better than you.

Inqui, if you want your friends to play the game with you, how about having them play each other without you? Either that, or guide them as they play against you.

The only way to learn Starcraft is to have a Korean man beat you in five seconds over and over again, and you slowly take longer to die

I think that's a good idea, as long as they're not the kind to see it as condescending. I mean, it sucks when you are interested in a game before any of your friends, so clearly you're going to have an advantage at some point. I think it's lame for them not to give the game a real chance.

Sigh, i don't know if i should stick with League of Legends. I'm just getting stomped playing with the usual guys. it's not fun anymore because i bring an entire team down. During my 3 month hiatus, i got rusty, but these guys just got better and better and the skill gap was already pretty apparent before, now it's just ridiculous, i get matched against people who can fuck my shit up so bad...

I need to find people around my level, but all the PA people i know are beyond my level because they started way earlier than me. Sigh...

Play bot games or with randoms for a bit?

LoL is the exception to what I was saying earlier. Not only does it usually suck to lose but somehow the skill curve in that game defies all logic. People simply become too good at that game. It's like they bend the rules of time and space.

Skyrim is programmed such that all enemies are at their core, the same type of object as the player. The AI routines that fight you don't "cheat" and operate what is basically a virtual controller behind the scenes. Not only that, but using the console command "player.setrace <something>", you can make your own character into basically anything. I've been playing as a dog, as a Dremora, as a giant, and even as a dragon. Some races work better than others. Dragons can only crawl on the ground and breathe fire. But it's still awesome.

Tons, actually, through elementary school chess clubs. Not really the main point though, I guess.

......or play one of the myriad of other games he owns?

I mean, when the only people I could play Starcraft 2 with were either miles better or miles worse than I was, I stopped playing Starcraft 2 and started playing other games.

To be fair, I don't think Inqi is miles ahead of his friends in this game; I think it's a different situation than the more general one we're discussing now. But it's totally understandable why people wouldn't want to play a game they're always losing.

I should get back in to LoL. It'd be a nice break from TOR.

If that woman's cleavedge made one more person pick the game up off the shelf, it was a net positive for microprose. And to be blunt, if taking her top off could have increased sales enough to get a sequel, I'd endorse it 100000% because I like playing great games.

Actually yeah, Inqi has heard me say a million times that one of the main aspects of a game that determines how much I like it is whether or not I can have fun while losing.

And? I mean, it's not like there is a 1:1 correlation between games played and skill. I am better than some people I know who have played hundreds of more games than me, and worse than people who have played far less than me. If you are behind your friends, catch up by playing pub games. Mute everyone if you don't want to hear them talk.
