I previously had a theory on exactly which side of the tracks was the wrong side - and it had to do with prevailing winds and geography of the place in question. The natural goings on of a society (like factories) are going to make some parts of town shitty. Being above and/or not downwind of environmental damage (for example) is what people with money are going to opt to do. The other side of town is the shitty side of town.
