Fucking Hexen and Hexen 2. Hexen 2 was the first game I ever played online and it was awesome. I convinced a bunch of guys at a lan party a few months back to install and play it and we had a blast going through the campaign then switching over the plain deathmatch.

Heretic is also really good, though I never played Heretic 2.

When I first started playing Skyrim I was getting some pretty heavy Hexen 2 flashbacks.

So, is fondly remembering Marathon going to make me a Heretic here?

Because those are good games. For free now. No dollars.

Dual shotguns. Double barreled. One level just hands you a pair and infinitely spawning ammo. Good times

You can play the first bit in browser, if one is so inclined, here.

    Just kinda neat.

Holy shit I forgot about this.

    I liked Hexen.

Did anyone else give that RPG on the doom engine a whirl?
I think it was made relatively recently and you talked to people around a castle but I can't remember much else.

    I have.

I feel old. Of course, I think older, due to a family that owned incredibly old and crappy computers. When Doom came out, our box could only play Starflight.

the dark forces series was awesome, but it used an original engine

If it was a 2001 release it could be the total conversion mod here: http://doomnexus.drdteam.org/oldstuff1.html

    "The Darkest Hour"
I have not played it though. But that uses DarkForces assets anyway.

OMF 2097 is the only other game in my dosbox folder besides Betrayal At Krondor (X-Com uses Dosbox too, but that's through steam).

I tried playing it a little while ago. I am so so bad at it now.

remakes of the originals need to make sure to remove looking up and down and have your shots automatically target things higher or lower than you. also need to walk at about 60 km/h

You can totally look up in down in all the heretic and hexen games.

also the remake isn't very good. their goals outreach their talent.

oh my gosh ZZT. My brother and I spent so many hours making games with the level editor. We made a four part series for one of our friends where he had to escape increasingly terrible (in both senses of the word) puzzles and dungeons. I even learned the faux-basic language parts of it were coded in to make more elaborate things.
