Welcome to Chaos in the Old World, Fantasy Flight Games' boardgame take at Games Workshop's famous fantasy IP. In this game, players take the role of one of the four Ruinous Powers of the universe (and a fifth, uninvited guest). Speaking of which, I believe this calls for some introductions.

Tayrun as Khorne
Khorne loves long walks on the battlefield and nights alone with the recently deceased. He enjoys handywork, and has even so constructed a throne for himself from nothing but the skulls of the living. He's always on the lookout for new blood - in the most literal sense possible - earning him the title of "The Blood God." If Khorne were a flavor of ice cream, he would be Berserk Banana.

Overhamsteren as Nurgle
The other white meat! Or in this case, possibly white pus. Nurgle, now with 300% more pestilence! This is Great Unclean One with the new Nurgle Treatment, and you won't believe it! Have you ever been traveling around, and all of a sudden you wish you had brought your horrific ailments with you? But how are you going to fit it all in your bags? Well that's easy with the new Nurgle (or as we should say, the Old Nurgle)! Watch as it spreads the epidemic over the entire countryside as you pass. And if you order now, we'll throw in this free plaguebearer. Call now!

doldari as Tzeentch
Spoiler:

Salvation122 as Slaanesh
"Working for Khorne? It's ok, I guess, but I worry about my future prospects. You know how I'm probably going to die? Not enough blood left in my neck. You know how those Slaanesh dudes over there are probably going to die? Too many orgasms.
You can see my consternation." - Khorne Thrall

As the Prince of Pain and Pleasure, some might say that Slaanesh 'goes both ways.' His followers don't quite have a 'lust for battle,' but enjoy the 'corruption' of the aristocracy. He finds subtle usurping 'invigorating,' and sometimes even so much that he just has to release his 'keeper of secrets.'

MrBody as The Horned Rat
The Horned Rat does not exist, nor is there such thing as the ratmen that worship it. Scholars have concluded that claims of an empire of vicious verminfolk are nothing more than stories invented to frighten the very young. Any reports of having sighted these "skaven" is seen as spreading discord amongst the faithful and, naturally, quite blasphemous. The skittering and scratching you hear deep below you at night is naught but the fevered workings of your imagination. If you insist that you have seen these creatures, please see your nearest witch hunter to be summarily executed for your blatant heresy.

----

This will be a Play-By-Post game of Chaos in the Old World for five players, wherein the players will vote on whether to use the Base or Morrslieb decks, and on the composition of the Old World Deck. Invitations will be taken from the discussion thread and offered to five newbies.

I'm pretty sure that if we end up playing with Morrslieb cards/upgrades, at least two of our players don't have the experience to have an opinion when it comes to nerfing the Bloodletter upgrade, but I'll put a feeler out there anyway.

    I'm in! :)

I would like Morrslieb cards and upgrades but no expert old world cards.

I've never tried Tzeentch so I would to play as him, apart from that I have no preference.

I wouldn't mind if the Bloodletter upgrade got a nerf.

Preference for Skaven but I could play whatever (Morrslieb cards in either case)

I'd go for an expert or mixed deck, just because I haven't run into them all yet and am curious with how they affect games.

I also wouldn't mind if the Bloodletter upgrade got a nerf!

I guess I should also ask this at the very start:

Can Khorne get two dial tokens in the summoning phase if he plays 2 rampages in the same region and gets kills with each?

Does Slaanesh earn dial tokens per phase or per turn?

Does Verminous Horde work if only the Horned Rat has models present?

    No.

Does Slaanesh earn dial tokens per phase or per turn?

    Per phase, like everyone else.

Does Verminous Horde work if only the Horned Rat has models present?

We are going to house rule that as yes, although I still read the FAQ as (stupidly) saying otherwise.

Replied via PM, but, having no experience with Horned Rat:

    Base chaos/upgrade deck
Base old world (there's enough "fuck you" cards in there anyway)
I'd prefer Slaanesh or Khorne, after that no preference.

Is base chaos cards & upgrades even an option with 5 players?

  • DarianDarian Registered User regular
Yes. HR always uses his Morrslieb set, but the others have the choice of all base or all Morrslieb.

To someone who has never played before, online or in person, this is quite a confusing conversation to follow.

I pick stuff up fairly fast though, so I guess I'm fine with whatever. I'd rather play whatever is considered the "full game"/"most advanced level" rather than some watered-down newbie version. Learn by doing, and getting beaten down, etc.

As for which god, I don't mind really. If there are any which have a reputation for being tricky for new players to handle then not those please.

Well, the base game isn't watered down or only for newbies, it's just different from the expansion. The expansion might be a bit more advanced, but the base game has a steep learning curve of its own. And I doubt anyone here has ever played the base game with The Horned Rat, so it should be new for everyone if that's what we end up doing (and what I'm leaning toward with the votes so far).

I honestly think it's better to start with the base game here, so cool. And haha, sorry about that. You can at least partially blame Phyphor for your ongoing misery; it'd already be over if I'd just gone with my first instinct and airlocked you instead of encountering Kendra.

If you're curious, have a look at the decks on handtracker. The ones that just say "CitOW - (power) Chaos Cards" are the original, base decks. Further down is the deck for the Horned Rat and the expansion Morrslieb decks for the other powers.

(powers) confused me in the start <img class=" title="" class="bbcode_smiley" /> , power=chaos god, so could be any of their names instead in the sentence. :)

If it's the same to you what cards we use Tayrun I do think(without having tried base cards) that the expansion cards are cooler(except maybe Nurgle's) just thematically and what not.

doldari, are you and Overhamsteren related somehow? Your response was exactly like his at first. Maybe you just quote and edit to save time or something. A few other issues to sort out:

Despite my wanting an excuse to do a base game + HR, the majority wants Morrslieb (sorry, Salvation - you can always play a base game another time - @stever777 runs them every so often), and the majority also wants a Bloodletter upgrade nerf, so we need to vote on how to nerf it.

    The choices are:

    A. 1 point per kill
    B. 2 points max per region
    C. Complete nerf, replace with Base upgrade

Tayrun and Salvation each need to make an account at handtracker. Don't use a password that you use for anything else, as they're stored in plaintext there.

Last thing: not a real requirement, but it'd be useful to me if either doldari, MrBody, or both would upload an avatar so I have an easier time telling you apart. Thanks!

There, that should help keep track of which god I am.

Has anyone tried nerfing the upgrade via "only bloodletter dice count for 2 VP"?

I guess I'll vote for 1 point per kill. Although the 2 points max per region also sounds maybe balanced, it's too much playing exactly like a dial strategy.

  • DarianDarian Registered User regular
You can make a list of powers in the order you'd like to play them, or just let blah assign them randomly. Overhamsteren has requested Tzeentch and MrBody has asked for the Rat. Salvation said S then K, and Tayrun said anyone but Tzeentch.

I remember the first expansion game our group played, we all did "That CAN'T be right!" double takes when we first saw that upgrade. Plenty of games where Khorne blundered into victory with an awful first turn, taking the bloodletter upgrade second at the end of the 4th turn, not even realizing how powerful it was to maximize it, and still beating the 2nd place player by over 10 VP.

Have a bunch of spare desk room next to the computer at the moment. Figure I'll set up the physical board and have it run our game too! It might get awkward explaining to company why there is an illustration of stretched out human skin on my table, which is incentive for me to win as quickly as possible.

I'm gonna shoot for getting this started in earnest in about 3 hours from now. Anybody want to volunteer to take Nurgle so I don't end up sticking Tayrun with him? It's his first game ever, and I'd consider Morrslieb Nurgle to be pretty tricky.

Ok, so it's going to be Morrslieb chaos cards and upgrades, base Old World cards, and the Bloodletter upgrade knocked down to 1 point per kill. People have conflicting preferences, so I'm rolling to see who gets what. Rolling for powers (o,m,s,t,d): 5d100=28, 69, 92, 92, 41. So that gives us...

    Overhamsteren as Nurgle (limegreen)
    doldari as Tzeentch (dodgerblue)
    Salvation122 as Slaanesh (mediumorchid)
MrBody as The Horned Rat (gray)

Permissions have been updated on handtracker (for everyone but @Tayrun, who still needs to make an account), so you should all draw your first three cards. Board coming shortly.

Round 1, Old World and Draw Phases

    Weak, but sort of appropriate.

    Plunged into Chaos
Each player immediately scores 1 victory point for each Peasant token he has claimed. The player who has claimed the most Peasant tokens scores 3 additional victory points. - Discard this card instead of adding it to the Old World track.

No dead Peasants yet (obviously), so no points.

    game66state1.png

    Draw Phase:

Tzeentch may choose to discard one card (discards are done just by playing the card on handtracker, then linking it here) before drawing to 5.

Draw 2, 5 in hand, 19 left in deck
Draw 2, 5 in hand, 19 left in deck
Draw 2 or 3, 5 in hand, 19 or 18 left in deck
Draw 2, 5 in hand, 19 left in deck
Draw 2, 5 in hand, 19 left in deck

Once Tzeentch has decided whether or not to discard, Khorne will be active to begin the first summoning phase.
