Anyways, again, I agree with you Ducks. I've been railing against the added 'depth' for a while now. I don't think I've ever stopped bitching about machine pistols (even if MW2 did them 'right') and 'pro' perks.
As an almost graduated game design major, I can say that game mechanics > universe/experience is typically the best way to go. But it is possible to create a game out of a theme first but it's best to use this on a single-player experience. Typically it doesn't fare as well in a competitive experience.
where are you going to school? I'm thinking about going back to school for game design, but the fact that I'm stuck in Georgia for another year is kind of killing that. There's one school that offers a degree, but I don't know enough about the gaming business to decided whether it's a decent school or not.
in other new, the next CoD is now officially titled Black Ops 2 and will be releasing Nov, 13th.

I attend the local campus of SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). There is a Atlanta campus too. SCAD is a VERY good school if you're looking to get a game design degree. They teach everything from modeling, texturing, level design, game mechanics, animation, and programming. All of those apply to 2D and 3D games so you can't go wrong.
The problem is that the school is REALLY expensive. I'm massively in debt but know that this degree will help me out a lot in the long term. Better yet, you're surrounded by TONS of talented kids (18-22 year olds) who will work on projects with you for free just to get some work into a portfolio. One of my best professors is the director of the original Far Cry and Crysis. Dude is awesome and very open and honest about the industry.
But yeah, the cost is the biggest problem. I have lots of loans, government help, and the HOPE scholarship. Still gonna be paying out for a long time....unless I make the next Angry Birds type game.

Personally, I'd love to see the series scaled back tremendously. In hindsight, it's easy to see that at least part of the reason why Call of Duty 4 was so beloved was because of its simplicity: we had only a handful of weapons in each category, and each one played a little differently; secondaries were essentially limited to pistols; perks didn't evolve or progress; attachment options were basically just Red Dot, Suppressor, ACOG; killstreaks stacked, but were limited to UAV (3), Airstrike (5), Attack Helicopter (7). The formula was simple and elegant.
It's great that developers want to take their games up "to the next level", but it's pretty plain to see that it's just a little out of hand at this point. It's so much harder to balance weapons when you can have attachments like Akimbo, Rapid Fire, Thermal Scopes, attached Motion Sensors, etc. It's so much more difficult, I would imagine, to balance combat when players can have a sluggish, high-powered weapon as a primary, and two rapid-fire death machines as secondaries. It's just a lot more complicated now. I think a certain amount of that is great -I love the level of customization we enjoy now- but I also think it's just way, way too much. In my opinion, the series would be well-served by scaling it back to a level similar to what we saw in Call of Duty 4.
Akimbo and Rapid Fire were fun, but they have to go. They're hard to balance as you say and they also take over shotgun territory.
fuck Modern Warfare 3 PC. Fuck everything about it. Bullet spam bullshit. Fucking punishes me for having the gall to aim down my sights. How stupid of me to think that aiming at the guy across the map would give me the advantage. NOPE! Assholes got AKIMBO FMG9's just let the lead fly and you'll get a goddamn headshot. Damn near every killcam or final kill cam was someone just firing at the hip and half of those didn't even use steady aim. Glad I stopped buying the series after 4.
Anyways, again, I agree with you Ducks. I've been railing against the added 'depth' for a while now. I don't think I've ever stopped bitching about machine pistols (even if MW2 did them 'right') and 'pro' perks.
'cause that shit is stupid.
I kind of like what the Pro perks do.
I don't like how it rewards people who have played the game a lot, and punishes newcomers. It doesn't even reward good players, or punish bad ones. (I have all but four Pro perks, so there...)
I also don't like how some of the better proficiencies/attachments require so much leveling.
It should be a reward that let's you play the game or use the equipment/weapons in different (for griefing) ways.
Not just make experienced players stronger/deadlier/harder to kill.
IMO.
Death streaks on the other hand rewards people for dying, without in any way helping them right what they are doing wrong. It reinforces play styles that get you killed.
That needs to go.
IMNSHO
(Though I like slapping Juiced on my pacifist class in DZ, and will continue to do so until it death streaks are removed. Heck, I'll throw c4 on all of my support classes, revenge on my S&D one, and second chance on the rest, until they remove what is basically a couple of exploits.)
I think Black Ops had the right idea with the depth of choices, but the money system allowed the player to get to his style of play faster than an unlock system. Although they were wrong with how much the pro version of perks improved them. If they want the pro to be an upgrade I think it needs to be more specific, low quantity stuff that requires certain gameplay instead of just big numbers and time invested.
The biggest problem with MW3's unlock system is seen in the shotguns where you have to sit through 25 levels of bullshit until you get range, damage, and extended mags, the only specialization and attachments you need. Although that is related to the shotguns being inferior weapons as well.
I think akimbo was fine when it was on primaries because it makes the guns inaccurate and guarantees that you can't kill at range, but I think it's fine that they cross into shotgun territory since they function the same way as well. Akimbo on secondaries was a poor choice though.
I will echo everybody's sentiment that death streaks need to go. If they must stay they have to become more pacifistic like juiced and revenge. Shit like last chance and dead man's hand has to go.
I'd hate to play S&D against a team that's only using Revenge ... Other than that I fully agree.
Shit, having teammates give the other team sentry guns just so they (my teammates) can unlock the Ghost Pro Perk ... What were they trying to accomplish?!?!
If you're playing search, wouldn't they have to die a lot before revenge becomes useful? For mw3, i think that they pretty much got everything right except for shotguns. A slight buff to shotties (and move damage or range to a lower level) and bob's your uncle! Hardline is the only perk where the pro version is a must have, buff explosives a LITTLE and buff blast shield a lot and there you are.
I don't see an issue with support having the emp, or with it being at 18 points. Of course, i run specialist a lot more these days so that might factor in as well.
@joshgotro here's the CM901 gameplay you wanted to see, and I hate you for daring me to use this gun. I miss the days when it was broken and the noobtube made it shoot faster.
If you're playing search, wouldn't they have to die a lot before revenge becomes useful?
Oh, make no mistake, it isn't useful when you're doing well.
But if you die a lot thn it can really turn the tide. Remember, the players that tend to turn up on the revenge radar aren't the n00bs who get a lucky kill or two.
Being able to tell your teammates where the beasts are is a huge advantage.
It's not an insta-win streak, but it gives an unfair advantage for doing poorly ... I don't see the benefit in that.
I doubt that Activision is going to bring up the "Keep It Simple, Stupid." design philosophy and have whoever the developer of the next Call of Duty apply it. They need to get their ruby encrusted swimming pools covered in emeralds and dipped in platinum. Changing the money rain formula now is counter productive to them.
I seriously don't understand this logic. Especially when doing well in this series tends to give you even bigger sticks to hit people with.
The problem is that they don't counteract the big sticks they counteract me doing good. Also the sticks they give me in this game aren't that big. The maps counteract a lot of the air support and they aren't as deadly as they used to be.
I mean, I didn't really miss them in Black Ops, but "rewarding shitty play" has always struck me as a bit of a hollow argument, especially since by that same logic the game actively punishes your team for not having players that are doing well by giving the other team UAVs/Predators/(insert killstreak of choice here). I'm neutral on deathstreaks, honestly.
Call of Duty is an Asshole Maker. Someone just starting out in the game gets beat down to the point of rage, by "better" players and this stays with them through out the game as they level, if they're dumb enough to stay, and once they get to the point where they start to carry their weight they enact their revenge on anyone who happens to be in the lobby. Getting rewarded with cries of rage they once spouted themselves.
Getting killed by Dead Mans Hand sucks but doing it to someone else is awesome. Same with Akimbo FMG's. And whatever else is there that gets on ones nerves.

Yes, the car kill would count towards your next killstreak, but you died while in your reaper, so I'm guessing you died after the car kill.
That's how bad the gun is it messed up the sound of the game. If I died in that reaper I blame you for not protecting me better.

Probably because I was protecting you the whole time.
Best of luck, chief.

Eh, it made more sense before I typed it. Whatever.
It's been my experience that people are assholes to begin with, and that Call of Duty just gives them an outlet.
