edited February 2012 in Critical Failures
Many stellar cycles ago, Autobots and Decepticons were at war for the fate of Cybertron. The fighting was at an impasse; neither side would give way. And in their desperation, the Autobot leaders made a decision. Swallowing their pride, they begged for the help of an unaligned scientist-Toolbox.

Giving him the resources he needed to create whatever his brilliant mind could invent, they took him away to a distant planet so that he could do his work far from the battlefields. Knowing that they could never let the Decepticons steal the technology that they hoped would win them the war, the Autobot general in charge of the project, Trailblazer Prime, told only 2 others of the lab's location, so that they could escort Toolbox back to Cybertron when his work was done.

After what seemed like ages, Trailblazer Prime received a cryptic message from Toolbox, in which he gleefully declared his success in creating something that would guarantee victory for anyone so lucky as to own it.
The record of what happened after that is vague.

Apparently, one of the Autobots charged with bringing Toolbox back went rogue. This young soldier, known as Bolt (both for his skill with engineering and his ability to escape at top speeds), sent a cryptic message to Trailblazer expressing rage and fury, and declaring his resignation from the Autobots.

By the time Trailblazer Prime received the message, he lay dying on the battlefield, laid low by a brutal blow from a Decepticon combiner.

With Trailblazer Prime dead, all of those closely involved with the project were dead or, in Bolt's case, gone. With the war raging on all around them, it took quite some time for someone in the Autobot chain of command to dimly recall an order for a secret project, and the involvement of a soldier who had now gone AWOL...

Eventually, Bolt's message was rediscovered, and the source of it was traced. When the Autobots arrived on the planet with Toolbox's lab, they found the corpse of Bolt's partner... and a pile of shattered parts that were once Toolbox. Whatever weapon Toolbox had created was nowhere to be seen. They did, however, find a message on the floor, scrawled in oil: BOLT HAS IT.

An Autobot agent on Earth, sent there to keep an eye on the galaxy's foremost expert on space bridge technology, claims to have seen Bolt, near the Western coast of a country known as "the USA". Apparently, a Decepticon agent spotted him as well, and seems to have recognized the potential of the technology he caries with him...

Now, the unknown technology that lies in the hands of Bolt must be recovered. Should it fall into the hands of Megatron and his army, Cybertron could fall, and peace could truly be out of reach...

A team of talented Autobots is being sent to Earth to recover the technology, and Bolt-dead or alive.

This team is Squadron 13.

Do you accept your mission?

Squadron 13 is a Transformers PbP game, focusing on the adventures of a team of Autobot soldiers sent to Earth to capture a soldier gone AWOL and reclaim the technology he stole.

But of course, it won't be easy... not with the Decepticons on the march.

Currently, Squadron 13 already has a full cast of players recruited, but if anyone is extremely interested in playing, I will do my best to work you in!

Squad 13 is a primarily narrative based game, with combat/skill checks being performed with a d20. Full rules regarding that to come.

Who is Squadron 13?

@Reynolds as Treadrazer:
Name : Treadrazer

Brief Backstory : For most of his life, Treadrazer knew nothing but work. Hard work. The kind of spark-crushing grind that could drive a 'bot insane. Assigned to a mining job on an immense asteroid that would take thousands of stellar cycles to finish, he was just one of dozens of workers. Assigned to move rubble, haul ore and basically travel all over a giant rock carrying slightly smaller rocks for the foreseeable future, Treadrazer decided he would have to break the monotony before it broke him. Rebelling through modifications to the nearly identical body-type all his fellows haulers wore, his actions soon grew as loud and oversized as his form. Eventually Treadrazer was singled out for his behavior, and was labelled too 'disruptive' to continue to work at the mine. Suddenly unemployed and homeless, with no applicable skills for any position that didn't involve mind-numbing tedium and thankless hard work broken up by sudden bursts of violence and wanton destruction, it's no surprise he wound up in the military. He couldn't be happier with his new career, and most of his squadmates have been very glad to have him on their side...if they can stand his exaggerated personality, inappropriate outbursts and history of property damage and friendly fire incidents.

Alt-mode : Monster Truck

@BugBoy as Spotlight:

Backstory: Trained in first aid and rescue tactics, Spotlight was proud to be a member of an elite team of Autobot warriors back on Cybertron. Unfortunately, they were maybe too elite-nobody ever needed Spotlight's help! Feeling useless and underappreciated on his home planet, Spotlight jumped at the chance to go to Earth, where he quickly embraced his newfound and self-declared role as the protector of the little "humans". He's so eager to help out that he sometimes forgets that the tenacious fleshy things don't always need his assistance. Even if he sometimes (often) makes mistakes, Spotlight has a spark of gold beating in his core.

Altmode:Search and Rescue Helicopter

@Antimatter as Kilowatt:
Name: Kilowatt
Backstory: impulsive autobot soldier, with a quick wit, moves and mouth to match. Uses electric armament to take out Decepticons. On earth because that was where he was ordered to go. Loyal, but can be frightened by especially large foes.
Altmode: yellow sports car.
utDMT.jpg

@Ceno as Blowback:
Name: Blowback

Backstory: Blowback is a dreamer. He dreams of being a great warrior, one of the greatest Autobot warriors of all time, and - one day - maybe a Prime. This zest for approval and glory translates into a bot whose bravery is often intermingled with foolhardiness. If anything, he's known for leaping for looking, and finds himself facing overwhelming odds more often than his compatriots would like. Blowback needs to learn about temperance before he can stand as one of the Autobots of legend. In the meantime, point him in the direction of the nearest Decepticon. He needs to add a trophy to his collection.

Alt Mode: 1999 Mercury Cougar
blowback.jpg

@mightyspacepope asBeatdown:
Brief Backstory:
Beatdown hails from one of the rougher parts of Cybertron. Many of his companions from his early days ended up joining the Decepticon cause or pursuing other questionable avenues, like smuggling high-octane energon. Although he's a little rough around the edges, Beatdown managed to escape his environment and is a firm believer in the Autobot cause. He has contacts among the seedier elements of Cybertronian society.

Alt-mode:

Chevelle
faster%20trailer%20still.jpg

Who, or what, is Rustlicker?

@Personface as: Rustlicker
tumblr_lyxt1riXJG1r0xqnho1_500.jpg
Alignment: Decepticon officially but traitorous little shit with a tendency to work for the highest bidder
Backstory: Suffers from a defective Spark necessitating constant replacement of body parts due to constant degeneration. As a result has become a metallic obsessive seeking all manner of junk equipment and waste scrap. Drifts through space consuming abandoned ships and the corpses of any late inhabitants. Stores surplus material for resale or reuse at a later date, resulting in a keen knowledge of engineering, which coupled with his fondness for corrosive fluids makes him an apt poisoner. Crippling cowardice and a naturally reclusive nature have resulted in his shunning contact with most other beings and he is repulsed by their presence.
Alt Mode: A mechanised tick adapted for clinging to the hulls of space hulk constructs.

    Rules:
Squadron 13 is a primarily narrative game. However, you will need to break out your dice! You'll need D20 for most actions/damage rolls and other dice for damage.

    Actions:
Many actions do not require any sort of roll. Some do. In general, actions that do not carry a significant chance of failure will not require checks. If you have a question about what does and doesn't require a check, ask me. Because I don't want this to be all about dice rolling, most actions don't require checks.

Examples of things that DO NOT need checks:
    Transforming
    Scouting
    Combining

Examples of things that DO need checks:
    Attacking
Attempting to break or destroy sturdy objects
Lying to somebody who is suspicious of you
Dodging outside of combat (say, a bomb blast)

It should be noted that this game does not have knowledge checks. Either you know something, or you do not. In general, all of you start with basic knowledge about Cybertron, autobots, and cybertronian society. Having been given some information about Earth before your journey, you know certain things about the Blue Planet, but you are not intimately familiar with it. Organics and their way of life are still somewhat of a mystery to you.

You will also have more specific information based on your previous experience (Spotlight knows things about medicine/repair, Beatdown knows about the seedier elements of Cybertron society, Rustlicker knows about Decepticons, etc.). If you are not sure if you possess a certain piece of knowledge, just ask me.

    Skill Rolls:
I'll set these, and applicable bonuses depending on the circumstances. In general: 5-10 for easy things, 10-15 for somewhat difficult activities, 15 and up for very difficult things.

    Battle:
Over the course of this game, you will be involved with many battles! It should be noted that you DO NOT have win each battle just by punching your opponent until he falls. If there are creative ways to end a fight, try it out!

For when Punching is what you want to do though, here are the rules:

Combat operates with a D20. Because I am completely and totally unoriginal, you will need to get a roll of the D20 higher than your opponents Armor Class to hit. (You likely won't be fighting anybody that hard to hit, and if you are, it's a sign that you should look for alternative methods of taking them down...) Combat operates on a round-by-round basis. Ideally, everyone will attack once per round, but because that would probably slow the game down, rounds will be sort of fast and loose. Just don't take too many actions in unrealistically quick succession.

Your size matters! Bigger robots hit harder, but smaller robots are harder to hit. Smaller robots will sometimes have a disadvantage against larger ones, and vice-versa.

Unarmed Attacks: Punches, kicks, grapples, throws.
Roll the D20, try to overcome AC. It's that easy.

    Size:
Large robots often have a hard time hitting robots that are significantly smaller than them, because the smaller robots will be more agile.. If you are attempting to hit a robot that is SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER (2 size classes-so large vs. small, for instance), you take a -2 to your attack roll.

If you are ONE size smaller than your opponent, you get a +2 to your attack because they're a big target, and easy to hit!

    Damage:
    Small Bots: d6
    Medium Bots: d8
    Large Bots: d12
    Huge (Combiner-size): 1d12+1d6

    Special Attacks:
Attacks with weapons that you may have.

Melee Weapons: Anything that requires close-range, including improvised weapons.

Size doesn't matter so much with melee weapons. Unless someone has some sort of massive melee weapon, but that's not going to happen, right?

Improvised Weapons: d6, because these usually aren't as suited to battle as a crafted weapon.
    Regular Weapon: d8

Ranged Weapons: Anything that can be used from a distance. Blasters, thrown weapons, Killowatt's electro-whips.

    Blasters/Electro whip: d8
Thrown Weapons: If designed for throwing, d6. If improvised, d6-1.

    Non-basic combat maneuvers:
I really encourage you to try these out! In general, you can do pretty much anything as long as:

    1. The action is reasonable.
    2. You pass a skill roll, if applicable.

For example, if you want to collapse a building on someone, that action is probably reasonable, and doable so long as you pass a skill roll.

If you want to pick someone up and hurl them into some sort of environmental applicable, that's also fine, just as long as doing so is reasonable (you're not smaller than them) and you pass an attack/grapple roll.

    HP:
All of you start with 50 HP, with the exceptions of Treadrazer, with 60, and Rustlicker, with 45. The combiner has 100.

This may be too much, or too little. I'll adjust it as necessary.

When you run out of HP, you are incapacitated and can take no action (if you want to take passive narrative action, like saying things, this is fine, unless I specifically say you are offline).

When you run out of HP and suffer more damage, either directly or as a result of long periods of time without treatment, you die. I'm just including this for completeness, I don't really plan on killing any of you.

    Transforming/Combining!
Transforming is an action that does not require a skill check. It takes very little time to do. It can be done while being aggressed, if you're quick about it. It's a risky move, though.

The Autobots in Squad 13 possess the rare ability to combine into a single entity.

Combining is an action that does not require a skill check. It takes longer than regular transforming. It probably can't be done while you are being aggressed, unless you put some space between you and the aggressor.

The Squad 13 combiner is Bigger than Large, which is to say Huge. He gets damage bonuses and the like because of that. He does have a hard time hitting Small opponents, though. He trades some accuracy for massive power.

He is significantly smarter than most decepticon combiners. However, he's not brilliant. Around average intelligence. He does not possess the more detailed knowledge of his components (no medical knowledge, for instance).

It should be noted that because the Combiner tech used by the Squad is somewhat incomplete, combining is a big drain on the 'bots. They can stay combined for significant periods of time (don't worry about it, is what I'm saying) but after splitting apart again, they are weakened. For that reason, Spotlight advises his teammates to save combining for when it is truly necessary. (Sort of a letdown, but if you were always able to combine, you wouldn't be challenged by anything besides other combiners!)

When you combine, a d6 will be rolled to see who is in control of the combiner. Every few rounds or so, the dice will be rolled again to see who gains control after that.

The combiner CAN be formed with only 5 of the 6 of you. However, you'll be out an arm or so, and you'll take penalties. Any less than 5 bots, and you cannot combiner.

    How To Play

Post, with a description of your action, plus any applicable dice rolls. If you are attacking, roll for damage as if you hit. Your actions should be descriptive! Include dialogue, descriptions of actions, everything. You are part of the story! Don't be afraid to write it!

Because this system is totally rough, I'll be editing the rules as necessary. Feel free to tell me how to improve this system! I really do need the help.

    Prologue

A small rust-colored bot crawled over the rocky exterior of the planet. A sandstorm buffeted his eyes. He briefly thought about how lucky he was to have a thick carapace.

    Where? That way? Or that?

He remembered the transmission, accidentally picked up on his broken old communicator. It had once belonged to an Autobot who had made the mistake of getting too close to Bruiser during the Battle of the Ridge.Maybe that's why it suddenly burst into light and sound, showing a transmission of a building that sparkled and glistened with blinking lights.

"Cybertron Command! Come in Cybertron Command! Bolt's gone glitchy, he's-"

An explosion. The rust-colored bot, watching intently, drew back in surprise.

And they he saw them. Gears and cogs, little nuts and bolts, raining down from pieces of destroyed machinery. Piles of them, interspersed with some of those little blinking lights.

    He felt a familiar hunger.

"Cybertron Command! Come in, I think he's killed Toolbox, and he's going to-"

    The transmission went dead.

Using his communicator to track the source of the transmission, he searched for ships to hitchhike on, dreaming of one day finding that massive pile of beautiful gears. Of course, he fed himself along the way.

And now, he was finally here, on this forbidding planet. So close.

And he saw it, in the distance. Through a hole in the wall, he could see more of those lights...

He skittered towards them . He crawled through the hole, and transformed.

He saw a dead Cybertronian with an Autobot insignia on his chest, faded to Gunmetal gray. Not far from him, a pile of broken parts that appeared to have once been a Cybertronian as well.

Walking towards the massive pile of gears, enough food for weeks, he finally felt... happy.

Then, he could not see. A fierce blue light filled his field of vision. Shielding his eyes, he went in for a better look.

It was a perfect white sphere, glowing a beautiful blue light through slits in the surface.

    So hungry.

He picked it up, and felt its warmth. It seemed so inviting. Like it belonged to him. His chest cavity opened, as if it were waiting for something. He gently placed the sphere inside, and it locked into place.

    He was not hungry anymore.

There's a metallic creak from his seat, protesting as he finally shoves himself to his feet, looming over the pilot as he looks down at all the various instruments and readouts surrounding Spotlight. There's a long pause, before Treadrazer seems satisfied he has no clue what any of it means.

Turning carefully in the cramped confines of the ship, he stomps away from the pilot and the main seating area. "Treadrazer is officially ON THE JOB! Even though the situation is heating up, he keeps his cool!" Continuing to talk to himself, he disappears further back into the ship, sometimes scraping against the sides of the hallway if he's not careful. He looks for anything suspicious, dangerous or possibly explosive inside, while Kilowatt searches outside. Hopefully the problem will involve smashing, crushing or possibly smashing and crushing. Otherwise, he might need backup.

He begins the painful process of extracting himself from the workings of the great metallic organs around him. A pity to have to slaughter such a fine meal, but his survival was priority.
That, and whatever that degenerate sellsmart Toolbox cobbled together

Blowback grimaced as the engine whined to a halt. He rushed to the nearest control terminal and initiated a diagnostic, keeping one optic on his surroundings.

Rustlicker tightened what still functioned in his carcass of a body and shot upwards, wincing as he made a very audible clang against the plating of the ceiling. His head spasmed wildly on it's joint as he honed in on the exit.

Blowback readied his photon blaster and moved swiftly towards the sound he had heard, motioning for Beatdown to flank around.

    Finally, some action!

    He tapped his comm.

Rustlicker can feel his body heavy with spoils and straining under the weight of his cancerous decay. "Decepticon!"

Blowback kept his blaster trained on the grotesque form. It seemed to be capitulating, but he wasn't about to let his optics off of his target for one millicycle.

"Could use some backup here! And some restraints!"

He eyeballed the multitude of insect-like appendages.

    "A lot of restraints."

The cannibalized vocal module buried in the wreckage of his throat crackled into life with an audible radio hiss.
"I claim sanctuary. You Autobots are honour bound not to kill on sight. I seek discourse with your officer in chief"
The mandibles around the crown of his head twitch in an itchy fashion
    "I would make a deal"
