Also, isn't PTSD proof that men can't handle it either? Fuck, unless you're a cyborg, living every day for years in the desert never knowing if today's the day your convoy gets turned into scrap by an IED or a bullet finds your vitals, you are going to be a little fucked up mentally regardless of your sex.

Republicans, for the most part, have already completely alienated almost every moderate they had.

Plenty of women have seen combat in Iraq/Afghanistan. I think we can put this retarded "women can't emotionally handle the stress of combat" notion aside.

Which is pretty much what the Pentagon said too. Modern warfare makes the concept of the "front lines" really meaningless. Women are in the military and are seeing combat because combat is everywhere in the warzone. Pretending otherwise is just going to leave female soldiers with inadequate training.

Eh, the are things to be learned from Iraq/Afghanistan but those were very asymmetrical conflicts. If we had a conventional war with, say, China... it would be completely different. That's to be expected.

Military actions (outside of the 2-3 week period it took the US to absolutely crush the Iraqi military) have been very asymmetric and are not representative of what most military expect out of another conventional war. However, you can make the case that no other country will ever try to fight the US in a conventional war as that is where our overwhelming strength is. But, that is a debate for another thread.

This is about "women can't emotionally withhold the rigors of combat" and that's complete bullshit. Santorum is an ass and the fact that he never even served yet he feels he can speak with confidence about that exacerbates the problem even more.

We're not going to have another huge land war anytime soon. any such conflict carries too much risk of going nuclear

Mitchell: Do you have any concerns about some of his comments on social issues, contraception, about women in combat, and whether that would hurt his general election campaign would he be the nominee?

Friess: I get such a chuckle when these things come out. Here we have millions of our fellow Americans unemployed, we have jihadist camps being set up in Latin America, which Rick has been warning about, and people seem to be so preoccupied with sex. I think it says something about our culture. We maybe need a massive therapy session so we can concentrate on what the real issues are. And this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it’s such inexpensive. Back in my day, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.

Mitchell: Excuse me, I’m just trying to catch my breath from that, Mr. Friess, frankly.
I think I'm just going to quote The Simpsons.
We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Plus, there are plenty of physiological differences that make women (as a population) more suited to certain tasks performed by the military than men, so just selecting certain aspects of physical strength is cherry-picking.

    (e.g, submarines, high-G acceleration, etc)

Issa's hearing was convened to talk about Constitutional issues surrounding Obama's order. It wasn't about contraception issues. Basically you got played - sold on the grandstanding because it feeds your narrative. Either that, or you're intentionally spreading misinformation to promote an agenda...

    Here's the committee calendar.
The Administration's actions have forced us to confront a more fundamental question about the proper role of government in our lives.

This hearing is about basic question of religious freedom, and whether or not protection will be afforded to religious institutions who wish to follow their conscience in refusing to pay for products they find morally objectionable.

It appears pretty clear from the link, the text info, and from the testimony in the hearing. But, if you want to argue that you know the true reason, and you take evidence to the contrary as proof that you were right all along, I guess there's no discussion to be had.

Any serious discussion of the constitutional or religious issues will require a discussion of the contraception issues. Pre-Smith, there was a lot of balancing shit. Post-Smith, this is obviously constitutional simply because it is a general law of general applicability not aimed at a specific religion. However, if you want to be kind and assume they are also including RFRA, that requires discussing the contraception issues too because of the Sherbert test.

I mean, let's look at the participants:

The Most Reverend William E. Lori
Roman Catholic Bishop of Bridgeport, CT
Chairman Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty
    ---
    C. Ben Mitchell, Ph.D.
    Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy
    Union University
    ---
    Rabbi Meir Soloveichik
Director of the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought
    Yeshiva University
    ---
    Craig Mitchell, Ph.D.
    Associate Professor of Ethics
    Chair of the Ethics Department
Associate Director of the Richard Land Center for Cultural Engagement
    Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
    ---

and so on. It's a bunch of religious scholars and ministers, at a hearing on religious freedom. The last guy in the list is the nail in the coffin for this accusation that there's a secret, woman hating reason for this hearing:

    Barry W. Lynn, Esq.
    Executive Director
Americans United for Separation of Church and State

    There's a group, the AUSCS. Here's their site: http://www.au.org/

Here's a quote from them, on a recent issue:
Americans United Applauds Federal Appeals Court Ruling Against California’s Proposition 8

Americans’ Civil Rights Should Not Be Subject To Whims Of Religious Majorities, Says Watchdog Group

This is the sort of group Issa invites to a hearing that's supposed to be about hating women? Really?
You got played, or you have an agenda. There's really no other explanation.

Why not TRY waiting unit YOU're married then you DON't need BIRTH CONTROL or ABORTIONS. Back in the DAY to prevent BIRTH control girls would put a daguerreotype of STROM Thurmond in their vagina. Except back then we called them Bearded TACO'S. tHAT WAS before all of the ILLEGAL ANCHOR BABIES and the Mexican jihadi menace. TIMES have CHANGED SINCE THEN. I don't EVEN RECOGNIZE my America anymore.

Took me until "daguerreotype" until I was sure it was parody.
