I love how the url is "ufc creates belt ranking system"

And then the headline is "Greg Jackson creates belt ranking system"

They'll be hearing from my lawyers!

    A simple marketing maneuver.

Bravo has his shirts that he gives to his 10th Planet (nogi) guys. Couture's gym started colored belts to denote wrestling rank; I don't know if they're still doing this. Even Sambo Steve down in New York has introduced colored belts to his sambo students. Sambo has two belt colors, red and blue but normally does not indicate rank with belts.

It gives gym customers an attainable sense of accomplishment. And it helps spread word around. Colored belts are one of the most recognizable aspects of martial arts to outsiders.

Remember how Gustafsson kept getting compared to Jon Jones during his bout with Thiago Silva?

Here's Jones' comment about the commentary:
    http://bjpenn.com/mmanews/2012/04/18/i-dont-think-it-is-appropriate-to-be-comparing-us-the-only-thing-we-have-similar-is-that-we-are-both-tall-20575.html

For once I agree with Jon Jones (eww). Gustafson's a very different style of fighter from Jon Jones, even though they're tall, and it was a little weird when the announcers were constantly saying how similar they were.

It'd be a really interesting matchup though.

MacDonald was defeated by Carlos Condit via third round TKO at UFC 115[6] in a bout that earned the Fight of the Night award. Although MacDonald seemed to get the better of the first two rounds with effective striking and takedowns, Condit came back with a more aggressive attitude in the final round, and finished MacDonald with a combination of elbows and punches.[7] It was later revealed after analysis of the judges' scorecards, that had MacDonald survived another seven seconds, he would have picked up a split decision victory.

I watched it, he was beasting Condit, I gave it him 29-28 myself and many agree of not for that early stoppage he would be undefeated with a win over the current interim champ.

I assume that answers your question, maybe be a little more expansive with your posts next time?

Twitter rumor: Chael/Silva will be moved to Las Vegas due to scheduling conflicts like the UN being in town the same weekend.

If the fight is/was in Brazil I wonder what would happen if Chael won. I don't expect a riot but who knows what Chael would do in his post fight promo interview that could rile up the crowd. I think he wouldn't dare be anything but incredibly respectful but playing up the crowd could really increase his exposure.

Shame for Silva, I get the impression this is his last fight (his heart does not seem in it any-more) and he would like to go out with a win over Sonnen in his home Country.

Sonnen isn't mad, he would not troll the Brazilians in their own backyard (and he doesn't mean any of that anyway), he would be very respectful win or lose and pretend he was mis-quoted if pushed on earlier comments.

No he isn't mad but he is an incredible self promoter. Nothing would get him on Sports Center quicker than winning a title and trolling the Brazillian fans. Of course he doesn't mean it that's why I put "promo" he knows how to play the game as well as anyone.

If he did, I would be surprised if they didn't tear the place apart to get to him. Seems to be a moot point however if it's going to be in Vegas.

I hope it still happens in Brazil, because it won't matter which guy wins. The crowd will either go absolutely crazy or they'll be on fire with hatred.

Those are specific disciplines though. How do you have a belt for "ultimate fighting"?

Or rather, don't we already have belts for ultimate fighting? GSP has one, Anderson has one, JDS has one, etc.

Greg Jackson isn't the first guy to come up with a belt system for something. He can have a belt system if he wants and he can test his students to what ever level he wants. As long as he keeps an online catalogue of people he's ranking, I'm fine with it.

I guess this is mostly geared towards the non pros so they'll have some more motivation for coming back to the gym and putting in some effort once in a while.

Nah he just wants to entice more cannon fodder for Jones' training sessions.

Here is a light sparring session between one of those non pros and Jones, at Jackson's camp

MacDonald vs Mills seems like a gimme fight for MacDonald, he'll probably just ragdoll Mills for fifteen minutes.
Torres vs McDonald is interesting, Torres isn't the fighter he once was and McDonald has an excellent record but I imagine he'll have trouble keeping the fight standing too.
Hominick really has something to prove after being so reckless in the Zombie fight.

I'm not super hyped about any of the other fights really, so they'll probably be great and the main event will be awful in true UFC tradition.

Also a guy called Maximo Blanco is fighting, with a name like that the guy better be cel shaded.

Yup. Fahraz sat him down and said he was getting too old for his style and that it was time to pull home some safer wins. So now Torres leans on people.
