The music has a whole lot to do with how effective it is.

The persistent 16th notes in the violins are pairing with the go-right-to-progress motive in 2D platformers, they both have strong implications of progress and movement

when the 16th notes stop, the music seems to crash, be held in its tracks, and the video shows the same, with characters dying or now going right-to-left

It's great how all of this stuff people just sort of understand, the game or the music or the video convey the idea without explicitly explaining it.
