Again, the issue would be if there were a lot of extraneous characters with little characterization, things that made them unique, or reasons for their existence.
My making fun of you here is based on your misstep in logic, that it is the number of characters that would make people grow bored or tired. No, it is the quality.
It is the difference between the characters in Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen and the characters in Chrono Cross.
