If you guys like historical fiction at all, you should really read Gods of Gotham. It's about the formation of the NY Police department and it's got some awesome writing in it.

Same here. I also like how he writes, and I like that he loved languages and he wrote those books and made that world to fit the languages he made up.

Same here! I was and still am really into philology and history, and I find it remarkable that he could create such a rich false backdrop for his world.

And @Legba, I totally had my bag on my lap or in the seat well next to me the whole time. I know I didn't step on it or squish it and neither did anyone else. Abloo bloo. :(

Which of these covers is better, since I'll have to get a new one.

Yep. I have that compiled too, if people want it.

  • Blake TBlake T Registered User regular
Yes it is a thing that people (re: me) want.

This was the main reason I was asking shorty.

Other Gutenberg question. Is there an option to resubmit a work? Cause there seem to be a fair few dudes doing things to make them more readable but I was wondering if you could re upload them or something.

  • ButtlordButtlord Fornicus Lord of Bondage and PainRegistered User regular
I have no idea, I just download, edit, and compile when necessary. Sometimes i find existing public domain comps people have cobbled together like ass and fix those (the lovecraft is this, i saved about three pages unedited)!

Sometimes i just download them and add them to my horde like i'm fuckin smaug

Anyway i'll get lovecraft up in the morning because im on the phone in bed now

It's a good intro album for people who don't usually listen to metal.

  • ButtlordButtlord Fornicus Lord of Bondage and PainRegistered User regular
    no its not

a good intro album is Beyond Hell

because it's also The Best Album Ever

i used to listen to it on the way to school because screaming TAKE ME DEATH I AM YOUR SLAVE is a great way to wake up

  • LegbaLegba Registered User regular
No, it really is, because it's a bit more relaxed and melodic than most metal. Plus you can make out what the lyrics are.

  • ButtlordButtlord Fornicus Lord of Bondage and PainRegistered User regular
counterpoint it's about hobbits and shit

    boo to that

just go listen to an album about alien warlords getting killed and going to hell and killing the devil and coming back and smoking crack cocaine

the best possible things a story could be about

  • Lost SalientLost Salient generally you don't see that kind of behavior in a major appliance Registered User regular
But I prefer hobbits to crack cocaine!

Got no beef with the other stuff, really. (Except I am big on lyrics.)

Oh yeah and I meant to say earlier that last night I read the first volume of Chew, and it's totally awesome and now I'm staring at the price for shipping other volumes to me online. And crying.

So, just finished listening to the audiobook versions of Harry Turtledove's Worldwar series and have just started on the Colonization series.

I wish they had kept the guy that voided the Worldwar series and I don't know why they didn't, it was the same company that produced it and everything.

The Worldwar series is the one that's like WWII but with magic and dragons and it rotates between like 50 character's points of view?

It's WWII but it has aliens invading in 1941ish. And it only has like 10 different character's point of view. And I'm pretty sure whenever a character dies someone is added to the list, or at least usually.

Edit: I read the last book, Homeward Bound, before I started listening from the beginning. Sort of wish I hadn't but it also gives me some wry chuckles here and there.
