This has me putting a hold on finishing my degree and looking to a possible second field in skilled labor. WIND ENERGY! Right now their is extremely high demand for skilled labor in the wind energy sector. In the state of Oklahoma I can go get my training and licenses to become a level I wind energy technician and the state will pay for almost 90% of my tuition. The average starting wages for a wind energy tech is 20 dollars per hour and there is such a severe need for this form of skilled laborer that you are guaranteed a position out of school and will have great job security since wind energy is only continuing to grow. I will be going to El Reno, OK later this week to visit one of the schools and see what I think.

Are there good general job boards that people keep their resumes on, just in case? Like monster, is it worth keeping my monster profile current? I'm in a pretty specialized field so I'm not sure recruiters would see anything worth seeing in my info but maybe I'm wrong?

That wouldn't hurt my feelings. Actually I would rather stay in the plains as I would still chase storms on the side. The good news is that I would likely stay in Oklahoma or go to Kansas or Colorado.

Hi all! I used to browse this thread religiously when I first got out of school, but fell to the wayside once I started working full-time. It's great to see that some regular posters finally got out of their tough situations and are working good jobs now.

I am in need of some supplementary income to pay off my (crappy) car that likes to surprise me with repair bills every month and was wondering what success people had with websites like eLance and oDesk for freelance writing. My one friend works for oDesk and has had minimal success but told me you have to wade through a lot of crap in order to get to job postings that are worth your time.

I have experience in writing technology, business, health, and general human interest articles but due to my employer, I cannot work on anything in the medical field because it would be a conflict of interest.

It would help to know what field you are in. There are some websites that specialize in job postings for just those fields and nothing else. For example, journalism has websites like journalismjobs.com and Media Bistro that just post media job offers.

If all else fails, Joe has a very high track record of finding people job postings in their field, I am sure he could point you in the right direction.

Since a few people asked this, I'm a librarian. A public librarian, at that. My job now is touching on a bunch of other things like HR, basic payroll management, and grant management (writing, executing, reporting, etc.) and those skills would transfer elsewhere but I'd have to convince someone of that.

It's not even that I don't like my job but dang heck I could use some more money.

Apparently it was a homeless guy looking for 'money to get down to Miami.'

I will report updates as they happen in this 'Douchey Homeless Guy Situation'

(nope that was it but man what a homeless jerk no wonder he ain't got no home)

  • PeenPeen Registered User regular
I don't want to stereotype the homeless but it is true that there is a much higher percentage of both smelly and crazy in that populace and that can make dealing with them an absolute treat.

Man do I dislike LabSupport. So many jobs seem to be listed through them. Jobs I might like. However, every time I apply to a job they are staffing for, I never see so much as an interview with the actual company. I fill out applications and go to 'interviews' with the labsupport folks, but nothing pans out. It always seems like a huge waste of time going through them for anything.
This is compared with the current place I am contracted with. They found me, got me a job and didn't string me along with useless busy work. Also, they used email. This labsupport lady keeps calling me- I hate using the phone. She seems nice enough, but I am not feeling it. Last month she had a job for me, but it fell through. Never even got the name of the company. Now she has another- for reals this time! Should call her back in case it's real but

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

If for a sales job follow these tips....

Tip 1: Be cocky about your self. Show extreme confidence in your abilities.

Tip 2: Make it seem as if not hiring you is a foolish choice since the competition will, and you will take them to the next level.

Tip 3: No mater what gender you are, have a firm handshake that starts with showing your palm up.

Tip 4: Keep your posture and stance in mind, your image and how confidant you really are will show in it. If you slouch you look weak.

Tip 5: Have a seat first and offer your hand shake first.

Tip 6: Be able to rapidly answer any question with out much thought. Keep your responses to short yet sweet replies and be ready to over come any objection with out a second thought. Remember, they are trying to test your sales skills. If you can't sell your self you cannot sell their product.

Tip 7: Keep as much control over the interview process as you can. Through your replies to their answers make sure you set up and lead them on to questions or elaborations that only make you look positive in their eyes.

Tip 8: Be sure not to drink lots of alcohol until after you have left their offices with a start date.

They had about six hundred layoffs a few weeks ago.

I don't think anyone around here who works for Blizzard has been cut yet (though I haven't heard from Sarakun in a long time) but yeah, errybody's on edge right now.

Man, I kinda hate that we recommend a smart phone to our users. iPhones work best with our network and we can support the connectivity to the wireless and exchange server, but past that it's call Apple/the provider.

People always get pissy about that.

  • That Dave FellaThat Dave Fella Registered User regular
They already let people go in our US offices cause Texas/California are at-will. They're going through the process now over here and people have the opportunity to volunteer for it if they like.

I'm in the position where my job isn't one that will be gotten rid of but I can still volunteer if I like. I've applied for a working holiday visa for Canada so I figure now is as good a time as any to leave.

I'm looking for a new one of these!

Polished up my resume and slapped it on dice.com. Got a call from a recruiter a couple hours later. Still need to call her back.

My resume shows that I'm currently employed. Wish they would not call me when I'm at work.

but I guess they probably don't want to be working in the evening.

I put my resume up on there, mentioning I want to move from test into dev, I'm only interested in positions in Seattle, and that I prefer contact via email.

Naturally, I immediately started getting calls about test positions in Redmond.
