It was his fifteenth birthday and Mitabo knew what was coming. In his tribe it meant being a man, and being a man meant having no fear. He remembered his brothers birthday, he screamed in terror when the mask men came for him in the early morning and was slain then and there. He heard rustling outside, the masked men had came. Despite their terrible mask he knew they were just men and showed no fear. They dragged him into the village, shouting strange things but Mitabo showed no fear, they were just words and could not hurt him.
Mitabo was placed on a small platform in the middle of the village and his hands and legs bound. A large man burst forth from a nearby building running towards him swinging a large sword and screaming like a banshee. He knew it was a mere test and showed no fear. The man stopped in front of him, plunged the sword into the ground and bowed. An old man emerged from the hut with a large basket. He stopped in front of Mitabo and lifted the basket above him, then poured dozens of snakes onto him. The snakes would not hurt him and were merely frightened themselves. Mitabo understood this and showed no fear. The snakes slithered away and the old man bowed.
The masked men then dragged Mitabo to a large cauldron full of boiling water and placed him in a cage above it. The cage was lowered into the cauldron and while it was painful Mitabo knew it was still just a test and showed no fear. His cage was lifted up moments later and the men around him bowed. Mitabo was then dragged to a large pit where a hungry leopard prowled below. The strongest of the masked men lifted him up and lowered him into the pit holding onto his ankles. The leopard snarled and snapped at Mitabo but he trusted the man holding him and showed no fear. He was lifted out of the pit and the men bowed.
Mitabo was then dragged away to his last test. He was placed in front of a deep chasm and had his head forced down. The darkness was maddening, a swirling torrent of terror and emptiness. Mitabo finally screamed and was cast down.
