Remember that Sony fucked him over so bad that it killed Working Designs (refusing to approve anything they wanted to bring over, since "Americans don't like RPGs" and "Sprite based games don't look good." I wouldn't count it as being officially approved before getting a copy in my hands.

What killed Working Designs, or one of the big things had absolutely nothing to do with RPGs or sprite based games. He was obsessed with bringing over a 3D PS2 Goemon game. It looked terrible, had bad reviews, but apparently Vic kept working on it and pushing it and Sony kept turning it down. That was the final game they were working on, and it's what eventually killed them.

    It's funny you mention that.

One interesting revelation is Ireland hasn’t given up hope on releasing Goemon, technically Bouken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon, which Working Designs localized, but weren’t able to get approval for. Ireland says the Mystical Ninja game is ready in English and he would like to release it as a downloadable PS2 Classic via PlayStation Network.

they're apparently not going to release 2's PS3 port, since Ireland being the liar that he is decided to change his opinion on whether or not the kickstarter will influence the release of the PS3 port decided instead to hold it hostage and because the kickstarter failed no ps3 port. because, again, he's a liar and a cheat

Well, that fucking sucks. Still kinda wish I had the money to kick them some in their kickstarter, because I really want these games, and wanted the PS3 port.

On the other hand, Vic getting involved really lowers the chance of getting Class of Heroes 3, yet alone it's PS3 port, because if this bombs it'll damage the brand in the US -- such as it is.

So apparently the entire thing is (NOT, see below) canceled now:

    http://playstationlifestyle.net/2012/05/02/class-of-heroes-2-kickstarter-fails-game-wont-see-localization/

Which means that we'll never see Class of Heroes 3 (or the PS3 version) which apparently is freaking amazing. Does that count as "damaging the brand?"

Edit: Kotaku is saying they're just going to go the slow route now:

    http://kotaku.com/5907482/when-a-kickstarter-fails/

    Money quote:
"The biggest failure was time, or lack thereof," said John Greiner, head of Monkeypaw Games and one of the leads behind the localization of Class of Heroes 2, in an e-mail to Kotaku. He said the project had been in the planning stages for months, but Double Fine's immediate, rapid success this February drove them to expedite the process. They wanted to get Class of Heroes 2 up as soon as possible. They didn't have time to put together all the screenshots and gameplay footage they would have liked to use.

The recent Mythic kickstarter scam has me wondering though -- if the funding failed, does that mean Monkeypaw gets partially funded for this, or they get nothing at all?

Edit 2: And in other news, here's a trailer for "New Class of Heroes" (aka Class of Heroes 4):

Looks like a more... I won't say "Traditional" RPG (since they don't get more traditional than Wizardry style) but a more "mainstream" one, perhaps.

I know it's kinda a niche game, but lord, I hope Monkeypaw can make this work, with the PSP and PS3 versions. 3 should use the same engine so localization work should be easier, and 4 there looks awesome, even if it's not a Wizardry game anymore.

It's not like there isn't a successful Wizardry clone out there also on its fourth version that's still a first person dungeon crawler.

Well, true I guess. And XSeed is bringing over Unchained Rexx (as Unchained Blades), which is a First person dungeon crawling monster catcher, so, yeah.

Monkey Paw Games got in touch with me (or rather, replied to my tweet), and the PSP version at least isn't canceled. Asking about the PS3 version next.

    Trailer:

Note that the gameplay footage there is apparently from the PS3 version. Hopefully that is a sneaky way of letting us know that the PS3 version is coming, and not them just picking the better game to get screenshots from. But at the same time, while this was tweeted by Monkeypaw yesterday, it was posted a month ago, so plans may have changed.

So this was supposed to be out a while back, but Vic has been obsessing over Tomba... again... to the exclusion of all else. Anyone have any idea when this is coming out? I'm hitting the very end of Elminage Original and am looking for another dungeon crawler.

Maybe we'll luck out and he'll obsess over a single game that nobody but him cares about so much that he puts himself out of business again.

Is this actually what's happened or are you making that up to try and discredit him or something? Either way, it doesn't sound correct to me. Sony are the ones that do almost all the work getting PS1 games on the PSN, including checking out any lingering legal issues, ripping the game, creating the wrapper for it and testing to make sure it works properly on the emulator. The publishers role is more along the lines of fronting fees (both for submission and ratings boards) and PR/marketing, which I'm pretty sure MonkeyPaw were handling. It's not like Gaijinworks had to re-translate it or anything, so Vic should barely be involved.

I've not heard anything though. My guess is that Acquire's the reason why it's taking so long.

What, really? Huh. I thought it was Sony cockblocking everything they wanted to localize because they weren't pretty enough for a US Market or somesuch. What's the story with Growlanser?

I think it's just as simple as "they spent a lot of money making it, and nobody bought it"

But I mean they were working on Goemon at the same time, and the localization is apparently 100% done despite Sony repeatedly refusing them on it.

Growlanser 2 was done, Sony wouldn't let them release it as a stand alone because it was '2d'. So it had to be bundled with Growlanser 3. Which took WD another year, with no incoming profits. End WD.

Goemon was certainly the game that did them in. Vic not only wanted to localize it, but he also wanted to clean up the game in terms of bugs and gameplay. That was not going to be the same thing as localizing Growlanser. While Sony was rejecting it over and over, the fact that he wouldn't let go of bringing this one game over caused them to spend way too much money on its development. Worst of all is the fact that it never came out so all that effort was a waste. If he seriously still wants to bring that over, then I can't see this ending well.

You know what the real sad part about all of this is? The game isn't even good. In fact, it's a mediocre game at best. Unless you never seen it and just like Goemon, it is a serious departure from earlier games in the series.

Your guess is as good as mine. His early justification was that he felt the Goemon series never got a fair shake in the West. If that was the case, then this game would have turned off not only casual players but probably Goemon fans as well.

Because releasing PSP games even now is a risky and tricky proposition, let alone a year from now. Releasing 2 now instead of 3 just makes it increasingly likely that 3 will never be released at all.

I think it's quite the opposite. Sony have apparently dropped all royalty charges for PSP games, so releasing them seems more risk free than ever.
