Why the hell anyone would want to play Battlefield 3 offline is beyond me. It's pretty much all about the multiplayer.

You may as well just save time by setting a couple twenties on fire.

No, I mean the people who got banned from the forums and then couldn't play their single player games.

    Apparently today's EA day.

    Keeping with the theme:

EA Backs Off On Bans, Allows Access To Offline Content

If you got a little overzealous on Battlefield 3 and maybe installed a hack or two, you probably figured your ban would only pertain to the online portion of the game via EA's Origin service. WRONG.

Hey, Electronic Arts wasn't about to earn the title of Worst Company in America sitting down. Though, now that the Golden Poo award has been handed out, the publishing giant is taking a step back from their Origin bans policy. Switch your Origin client to offline mode and enjoy all those single-player games you bought and paid for.

If you're still hoping to get back online with EA's Origin service, you'll need to appeal the ban and hope someone thinks you've learned your lesson.

Not that people who use hacks to gain an advantage deserve much sympathy.

I remember when RPS was angry at that reward because they were named that because of gay relationships in their games. I remember some journalist saying "Oh wait, we don't live in the 50's anymore" like that has to do with anything.

To the point, now everyone is some people are embracing it.

Why should people who say naughty words on a forum or badmouth EA's business be allowed to play their video games?

On a related note did EA ever get Origin allowed in Germany after it's EULA violated its privacy laws?

Ah, well that doesn't seem to be the case from the official word on their site from which the article was sourced.

    Spoiler:

Doesn't mean that that isn't the case, its just not explicitly mentioned.

UPDATE: Nintendo has responded in a statement:

In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.

EA about to layoff 500-1000 employees.
    http://startupgrind.com/2012/04/exclusive-electronic-arts-set-to-lay-off-500-employees/
Exclusive: I’ve confirmed from multiple sources within Electronic Arts that the company is planning to layoff 500-1,000 people as soon as this week. As of March 31 public numbers, that represents between 5%-11% of total company employees. The layoffs were originally set for last Monday (4/9), but they were pushed back and we’ve confirmed they’re coming very soon.
Oh man, remember that brief period when everyone liked EA again?

    Thats called PR

    Also
After a brief resurgence, EA has had a rough year with Star Wars not matching lofty internal expectations, an expensive Popcap acquisition, a CFO departure, and being recently named the worst company in America.

While it looked like a possible banner year, over stretching on several fronts led to a disappointing fiscal year. Estimates put Battlefield 3 sales around 13MM units, the company ‘chased’ the launch dumping an estimated $30MM into incremental marketing after the game launched according to one source within EA. The same thing was done for Star Wars to extend its run and try to improve sales. Star Wars sell through is estimated to now be around 3MM units, but the subscriptions which are needed for an MMO to payoff are already declining.

I can't help but laugh. Then be sad. Then laugh again. Seriously what budget fuckery makes 13M sales of a full price game *disappointing*.

EA: how to be successful and screw up at the same time.

Wait, EA bought PopCap? Dang, no more PopCap references and mods in WoW I guess :(

So happy to see Wasteland succeed and get over 3 million! It's fantastic to see gamers support old school style turn based RPGs in force. I really hope that Shadowrun manages to get around the two million mark by the time it's finished its kickstarter.

Assuming these games come out around next year, 2013 is going to be one of the happiest I've been RPG game wise since the good old days of Interplay (back when they were releasing Fallout, Planescape Torment and Baldurs Gate).

Apple could be getting back into the console game market with a helping hand from Valve, according to a report on Cult of Mac.

The Apple-focused news site followed up reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook visited the Bellevue, Washington, headquarters of Valve last week with an explanation for the executive's trip. According to Cult of Mac sources, Apple is preparing a TV set for release later this year that "will come with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console." According to the site, the system will rely on motion and touch controls, possibly through a touch screen remote that will come with the TV.

The news follows rumors of Valve's entry into the hardware market. Last week, the developer posted job listings for an electronics engineer to join its hardware team, which is creating "whole new gaming experiences." The company has also said it is investigating the field of wearable computing and augmented reality.

Neither Apple nor Valve returned requests for comment as of press time.

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/apple-game-console-rumored-for-2012-launch-6371858

Certainly interesting, but if Valve is just now hiring guys to work on wacky control schemes, I seriously doubt such a product would be ready for 2012.

Also: I want this product to exist simply because the cognitive dissonance stereotypical game nerds have toward loving Valve and hating Apple will cause heads to explode.

Did anyone else read Ben Kuchera's fantastic Kotaku burn on Twitter? The one where he pointed out that he'd actually written about what Valve were actually doing with these tech hires (wearable computing and biometric feedback research) some time ago, but everyone just went "LOOOOL GABEN HAS A BEARD SANTA!!" and copied the photo. Because I sincerely doubt that Valve are working with Apple to make a home console. Read that sentence back.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/legend-of-grimrock-has-already-recouped-development-costs/
The recent independent release, Legend of Grimrock, is fast proving that first-person dungeon crawlers are far from dead. After less than a week on digital shelves, the role-playing game has already recouped its development costs "many times over," developer Almost Human Games told Gamasutra, who added that the studio now "seems pretty secure."

It's good news for Almost Human and, more importantly, bodes well for Myth of Bleakstone, our hastily assembled attempt to cash in on the upcoming resurgence of first-person dungeon crawlers.

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/168671/Amazon_Appstore_removes_price_restrictions_on_inapp_purchases.php
Newsbrief: Amazon Appstore developers can now charge more than $20 for in-app purchases, given that parental control over the functionality is now in place.

Amazon sent word to developers this week, as reported by TechCrunch, explaining, "With our parental controls functionality now updated, in-app items over $20 may now be submitted via the developer portal."

Amazon introduced its in-app purchase support for Android games available via its Appstore earlier this month. This latest move is significant as an analyst report last year suggested that around 51 percent of in-game purchase revenue comes from purchases of $20 and up.
    Go get them whales.

I was excited about this until I got to the second bolded part. An Apple/Valve console? Yes, please! Some new TV with built-in waggle controls? No thanks. Haven't TV manufacturers been taking a beating lately?

TVs are pretty much the largest cause of their 6.4 billion loss, yep. Probably because everyone's already upgraded. And unless this thing manages to be super-dirt cheap, I can't see it truly catching on. (Apple's involved, it won't be cheap.)

If only there were already some low-cost console that incorporated motion controls. That might really catch on!

I don't see how Valve fits into this. Might Apple produce a new TV that uses Kinect-style sensors to replace the remote control? Sure, but that's not going to let you play Steam's catalog of PC games.
