She does come off as having a bit of an attitude but after doing both quest lines I prefer the sword one.

More work upfront, less later on.

It's actually a predestined outcome, you get the drop no matter what you do.

Also, notice how that Nopon offered to polish the weapon she wanted you to get from the swamps with magical mystery juice?

    Yeah.

More to the point, you kind of had a vision of him keeling over dying from poison after getting grazed by it.

I gave her the shield. Useless bitch doesn't deserve a promotion over someone who's actually competant because I've done all her work for her.

I wanted to find the shield (mostly due to that vision), but stumbled across the nopon merchant first because I was out looking for Burmia Scent Wood for C6*. I can't ignore a ! and don't turn down quests; after you accept his quest I think you get locked out of finding the shield.

*And then the little fluffball asks me to find more of that crap and delays me from getting that L2 Residency even more.

In retrospect, I should have turned him down. But I had saved (read: ended my session, since it was like 3am) right after accepting so I was beyond hope at that point. :\

Edit: On the subject of C9 quests, is there a significant difference in whether you talk to Leopold or to his girl in the loan shark quest? I went with her, hoping to avoid a break-up. Most of the other choices I've made (nopon love, fighting brothers, soldier love) I've been sure of, but that one could have gone either way.

A few people really liked it, and some even find it superior to the Reloaded version.

Personally, I never got a chance to try it out for myself, but a buddy of mine did. He's generally not into FPS games, but he liked it alright.

The shield is by far the better outcome. She doesn't deserve the position, plain and simple. She isn't cut out for the job and she's a fucking soldier. You do not give someone a position they're not up to because that's on more peoples heads than just hers. With the shield, she's forced to face her inadequacies and deal with them one way or the other.

Edit: Lionheart it's not just four stars. It's a nebulous value between four and five as well as having done Jackson's quest.

Edit: Vyolynce - The Leopold version is pretty different yeah, and I'd say better. In his version you frame King Squeeze for some serious shit and Leopold really gets him by the balls. Which King Squeeze kind of deserves.

I've done every major quest with two versions.

Sword versus Shield. Sword is more work early on, shield is less fun when the quest resumes but does have a better ending.

Eric versus other dude. Almost no difference at all. Eric is a douche though.

Cherri versus clearly the right person for the job. Picking Cherri locks you out of the best quest in the game and costs you an affinity coin.

En versus Zel Argentis. Both have equally annoying quests. Zel's is slightly quicker.

Berryjammy versus Macrish. Berryjammy is a jerk, but Ms. Sweetness is in her name. Macrish is also a jerk. Winner: Berryjammy.

Brother versus Brother: Nopon brother wants to leave, human brother is sort of being a dick about it. However forcing him to stay also creates a nice resolution.

Desiree's career: Artist is way better than Soldier, brings the whole situation with Betty to a satisfying conclusion.

Rosemary's Date: Nic all the way. While both of them are assholes on their own questlines, Nic is clearly the right guy for the job.

There are some minor decisions you make outside of quests that are important too. Tell the asshole researcher to go home more often, tell the nopon chef to cook what people like and generally call people out when they are being an asshole.

Yura is only an asshole to you. He is nothing but nice to Rosemary. Conversely Nic doesn't even care really, and is only worried about his training. When you bring it up to him he's all 'eh, I never really thought about it'.

Plus Nic doesn't make sense in the fact that Rosemary wanted to leave Colony 9 in the first place because she didn't like any of the men there. Nic is also from colony 9. Why would she be suddenly interested? When you mention him to her, even she's all "eh", and is far more interested in Yura.

Though shirtless dude definitely has the best response to the whole thing.

I like the Eric versus Andreas questline, explicitly because of it turning out poorly either way. It turns out that no matter how you cut it, magically forcing people to be in love with you is a bad idea.

One sure way to make me fucking hate a game I was otherwise enjoying is to have a last boss that is inexplicably harder than the entirety of the content leading up to it.

Heh. I wish I fought the final boss in a yellow state, instead of blue. It was a pushover and kind of soured the ending. I do enjoy a good challenge, especially when it concerns final bosses. It's not a final boss if the fight doesn't last at least fifteen minutes.

I was 82 when I fought the last boss. Took me about an hour and a half.

It was a joke until he'd summon his guardians and the terribad party AI would refuse to switch targets when told them to and I'd get chained to death and have to start over.

Also the game is really bad at informing you of what abilities are reduced by Armor and what aren't. I.E. every other ability in the game is reduced by it except half the last bosses attacks.

I don't care if its not the hardest fight in the game, the difficulty of it isn't appropriate at all given the difficulty of every single fight leading up to it. Plus, had I not gone out of my way to do every single sidequest pre
    Spoiler:
and then a bunch of the ones following that, I can't imagine how I could have been even close to a high enough level to handle that fight. I've ragged on people about the sidequests, saying if you don't like them don't do them, but if you don't do them I honestly don't see how you could possibly beat the game. Following the main story alone, without a shitton of grinding, you'd be well under 70, or less, making the whole last area or two of the game incredibly difficult, and the last boss you wouldn't stand the slightest chance against.

I'm not exaggerating saying I did every single side quest pre-that one point, I was keeping track throughout the game with the spreadsheet. I'm gonna say if you can do over four hundred (seriously) side quests and still barely be the right level to fight the last boss when you get there, that was some piss poor planning on the developers fault.

They shouldn't present the side quests as optional when they're really not. Fooled me.

Regardless, decent ending, if not a bit ham-fisted. It fit with the themes of the latter 1/2-1/3 of the game, so nothing was terribly surprising except one completely unnecessary "twist".

Thematically it is a lot more related to past Xeno-games than I think some want to admit or give credit to. Gameplay wise, and surface plot aren't similar much, yeah; but what the games are actually trying to say have been virtually the same thing throughout all the unrelated xeno-games.

Anyway, it's not that I suddenly hate the game now. 115 hours well spent. I'll go easy on the 90+ stuff I didn't do, not a lot of pressure to do it atm since I don't intend on doing a newgame+ this year as 115 hours in a single non-mmo game is more than I put into virtually any other single game; so I'm calling it good here.

Prior to the last boss I was just running things that made me kill shit faster, strength increases and whatnot, because everything was so easy.

With the boss I switched to mostly stuff to reduce damage and to increase tension because those were my biggest problems with it. Taking too much damage because Armor suddenly was half worthless (and inexplicably so, sometimes it'd work on the bosses attacks, sometimes, nah) and getting low tension and that dicking me over.

And I was running Reyn, Shulk, Sharla because they were the go-to god-party whenever I didn't feel like something being a challenge. Reyns abilities were mostly aggro focused, shulks was pretty much the default because, well, he doesn't have any options to switch out; and sharla was completely heals/buffs with no damage arts.

LIke I said, the fight would be a joke, constantly, until guardians came out. Then the AI would just fucking refuse to do whatever I told it to; Reyn wouldn't get off the boss, so the guardians would just clobber Shulk; and whenever those guys were out was when Armor didn't do a damn thing.

The annoying thing was, when he summoned them was random. The first form he only does it once. The second form? Who the fuck knows. When I beat it, he only summoned them once. Prior times he did 2-3 times. He had an ability, that I don't recall the name of, probably a spoiler anyway, that would randomly either summon them or do fuck-all. You can try to chain him to keep him toppled to avoid the change, but there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when he did it so it was hard to predict. The third form wasn't hard, and I don't think it was supposed to be for reasons that are obvious in the ending. The first was only hard the first time I didn't expect the guardians, then it wasn't hard the second time. It was the second form and it's inconsistencies.

With full haste and double attack Shulk can have monado armour up basically 100% of the time, his CDs are low but feel free to hold off on spamming them to just fill up his talent gauge super fast. Also the last boss is immune to daze so remove any skills that inflict it because it's just a waste. The difficulty you may be having with Reyn is lock-on, personally I didn't have his lock-on ability set on him and I've never had problems with changing target (although it always takes a couple of second while they finish whatever they were about to do next).

That's your problem. You're using Reyn. Seriously though, I was at 82 too and I had literally no issues. Armour did its job and the battle was over in ten minutes. Didn't even have to focus on the guardians. Not sure if you've crafted VI gems, but they help a ton. Strength Up is not the most useful, so I'm assuming you didn't really put the time to craft gems and experiment with different skill setups, or even party setups if you're the most comfortable when using the first three characters for boss battles. Dunban is far more effective than Reyn against single, high level enemies. His naturally high agility lets him hit and evade more effectively and he does more damage to single targets. Maybe the game was on the easy side, so you didn't feel compelled to change much and craft gems. Personally, I enjoy finding about and using the most overpowered gear and skills in RPGs, but I understand not everyone likes it.

Watch as you proceed to gain a half-dozen levels just fighting stuff your level, with no quests whatsoever.
