SimBen, this reaction from your college reminds me of how students on a campus react whenever there is a major power-outage.

I just got accepted to serve as a staff person on our Student Conduct Board. But apparently there are no tiny gavels.

I was promised a tiny gavel.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Not my college. Students from every college.

My uni voted against the strike (it's in another city, too), but then strikers broke in and vandalized the building anyway.

Riots and Universities go hand in hand. That's why most staff people are trained how to hide on their first day on the job.

Not faculty though, they got it coming.

For the record, tuition fees don't vary from college to college here and they're throttled/financed by the government.

I'm not entirely certain how that works for the private universities, I think the government pays the difference or something? There might be an exception I'm not aware of. At any rate, the majority of students here go to public university (the Université du Québec network, of which the biggest one is UQAM). I went to UQAC, the one in a smallish northern town called Chicoutimi.

In the US it works a bit differently. Tuition rates are set by the schools but can only be increased by percentages set by the state legislatures and the Department of Education. So two schools in the same state may be vastly different in price and both be public, but they can only increase their tuition each year by a similar amount.

4/20 so nobody showed up to class. I got extra credit in my bio class for going, my second time getting extra cred because the professor wants to punish people from staying home because it is raining/because people don't wanna go to class because it is 4/20. He chucked vegetables at us! He went down to Whole Foods and bought several pounds of veggies to throw at us, "Catch!"

"They are ALL derived from the wild mustard plant isn't that neat? CATCH!"

You could try your university library or print shop to see if they have a paper cutter for you to use.

Otherwise, grab a pair of scissors and get to work.

There was one power outage here at the beginning of the year

I calmly stayed in my room and read the Iliad with a flashlight

At CWU we had people animatedly believing that if there was a power outage there would no class the next day and/or all their homework/assignments due the next day would be pushed to a new deadline. They were committed that this was the only recourse of such a devastating occurrence. Beyond that we had people freaking out in the halls and breaking policies (because if the power is out, it doesn't count).

Last year I had a resident ask me, "So does this mean I have to pack up my stuff and leave?" "What?" "Well I mean in an apartment complex when they evict you they turn off your power." "No, just no..."

During this a co-worker in another hall found that some people had straight up shit in the middle of the hallways in the res hall.

But my favorite was during my freshmen year. It was the night before I left to attend NACURH (the national conference for resident hall leadership stuff) and was packing by flashlight. Someone down the hall knocked on my door and asked if they could just leave as to grant themselves a four-day weekend (I don't know why they asked me...). They also asked if their huge midterm project would be due. I said it wouldn't and they should reward themselves with a four-day weekend because they deserved it (knowing we'd have classes the next day). And so they left...

I never saw that student at my university again.

And after that I went to another res hall where we had a water balloon fight followed by a six hour rave.

    It was glorious.

    Hockey is better than basketball

in my opinion, there is an inverse relationship between frequency of scoring and how fun it is to watch a sport

in games like basketball where points are being scored every 10 seconds, who cares?

but when a goal is scored in hockey, you celebrate.

nothing like a NBA game between two great teams coming down to the wire

i don't understand the hate against the presence of ego and showmanship in the NBA. it creates drama and characters, villains and heroes, tyrants and underdogs (think the Jeremy Lin craze).

it's the only sport i can watch.
